Lucky for having Mindi in our generation today than in the past when hearing was in charge. Bless Ms Failing and Alex for bringing this to the nationwide audience! Thank you both very much!

My opinion, aclu program needs to shut down.

I agree with that. Deaf and Hard of Hearing children right to choice. Mine is a Language Deprivation. That made me sad. Because of my old mainstream school not very well for ASL. I had been English Sign Language. My parent thought me will success it. It is not what parent did. I am deaf and love deaf people and visually sign language. It does not mean to harm the deaf and hard of hearing children. Their are right to decide if they want wear hearing aid, and want to learn how to talk. That is fin. I believe ACLE need to learn the language Deprivation. We do not want to low learning.

The ACLU exists to fight for human rights. Saying that should be shut down would also mean that the largest organization fighting for human rights in this country should be shut down. They need be educated and doing anti-ableism training. If they were doing anti-ableism training they wouldn’t take cases fighting for eugenics and against human rights. Saying “it should be shut down” says “no human deserves someone to fight for their rights.”

@@scottwilliams4763I research about Total Communication. It was so risky because I had bad sign language, poor English, and a lack of speech in a mainstream school when I grew up there. My parents spoke Spanish and didn't even know how to sign language. I looked like I was a language deprivation. I wish they chose Cued Speech or Auditory/Oral for me instead of Total Communication.

It's time to stop letting opinionated families decide whether the child will be allowed to gain the ability later on in life for speech and hearing. The science has changed, and being deaf is no longer permanent for tons of children. It's fine and good to use sign language, but letting the families decide to eliminate a childs future potential for spoken language is a potential harm.

What are you saying? That deaf kids should be forced to get unnecessary surgery against the wishes of their parents? Also it sounds like you're overestimating the technology, it does not provide effortless access to conversation the way ASL can

@hopewilson7918 if the parents wishes are in the best interest of the child, that's fine. Not all hearing can be recovered. If the patents wishes are not in the best interest of the child to become being an autonomous individual then. Of course!

@@nancienordwick4169Can you explain more? I think I kind of understand what you're saying, but I'm not sure.

One time a family with a cerebral palsy child decided not to treat their crippled condition because she thought it was cute they crawled everywhere. The kid was grade school and highly intelligent. It might be cute to have a crawling 6 year old, but they will be an adult some day and still had the full potential to walk upright with treatment. Every year, the potential to fix the problem diminishes. It would lock them into living with their mother forever and not allow them to choose because they cannot perceive all the future ramifications because the mother was just fine with this current state as natural. It's not fair to the child to remain a cripple because the family wants it because it limits the child's full potential. On the other hand, as a adult, they could then still choose for themselves to crawl everywhere.

Full access to a language is more important than learning to speak and hear. Ideally, there's work being done in both areas. Even someone who does very well speaking and using hearing aids - that's me - still has a host of other social issues to contend with IF they don't have anywhere where they belong. I finally went to RIT and it was such a relief. I think every Deaf child should have enough work done in BOTH areas that they can choose. And that includes access to ASL and Deaf culture AND hearing aids and speech therapy. It will become apparent what works best for the child and what they prefer.

There are signs that are the same for different words and you need to figure it out from the context. Same for spoken English. But I agree that ASL is wonderful.

@@MarleneHen True! Right now ASL have old/new , really confuse me at the deaf meeting, me still old at home as no arguing. I'm not old fashioned but for years habits that's why 😳! What next generation new ASL after we won't be here.🤟🫣 Don't forget BBB to be sure ask whether new or experienced workers for furnace heating company & see ID/company van first before go in. Watch out fake worker as switch, take picture not let see you.
