I really enjoyed this. Thank you for uploading the video again. I like those old geeps still working. Part of railroad history! I particularly liked the light power/street running segment where, after giving a good blast of horn, the car alarms saluted back!

Drayton, thank you for reloading this video and allowing us to view it again. You must have added or corrected some information in this video. It was nice to be reminded of the street running in Watsonville, California that the Santa Cruz & Mnterey Bay Railroad used to do before its demise/

I understand the local bike nuts are working hard to close the whole line and turn it into a trail.

You hear correct! A very political battle. They keep pushing for what's called rail-banking which means, "tear up the rails but say if a good use for them comes up, we promise to tear out all our millions of dollars of 'improvements' and put the rail back down".

@@princessofthecape2078 Interesting. Hadn't heard that but I believe it. Our little ocean-side town has about 30,000 commuters that drive daily over a treacherous mountain pass into Silicon Valley. There used to be a rail line called the Suntan Special that brought thousands of tourists over every weekend from the valley. During a lull in users right after cars made their debut the fools stopped the Suntan Special and abandoned the tracks. Subsequently a bunch of homes were built on the rail path and all the many tunnels were turned into places commercial paperwork goes to die (storage). That railroad would now be a bonanza to the weekend tourists as it services the local beach and boardwalk. Tourists wouldn't sit for an hour each way on the clogged highway puking out exhaust and commuters could've used it daily to connect into the extensive Silicon Valley mass transit. All that's impossible now due to the simple loss of the tracks due to shortsightedness. I can see the same thing happening everywhere they rip out track or do so-called rail-banking. If bike routes are so desirable then they should put them in, just don't take out tracks to do it.

the watsonville part of this branch is now served by the up local switcher on a as needed basis only, nothing goes past watsonville anymore. there was once weekly traffic north of santa cruz when the cement plant was working, but that has been defunct over ten years now. and sadly they have said this week in news about the line past the watsonville city limits that the track is to be pulled up and put in a storage yard, for maybe future reuse not that you can put much faith in that, they are just waiting on fra approval.
