Thanks for the tip, does the system give any error on the panel screen once you have it settled? In Euro5 bikes if the ECU detects an error the bike comoletely stops after some hours

@@andreutopfun these are on 2023 KTM 690 Enduro R US models, and there is no error codes. On start up the ABS and Traction control lights are on, as they would be if they were disabled by holding the button down.

My 890R, that rear ABS line got cut by the tire, it didnt just disable ABS and traction control, it disabled a bunch of other things to do with electronics and the rear sensor. like the quick shifter, and a few other things I cant think of right now. When I got a new ABS line put on it took a long time for the functions to come back. I would think twice before doing this.

Thanks for the feedback. We are not cutting any wires and simply spacing the sensor away from the tone ring. This is for off road applications where disabling the ABS is a benefit. This modification can easily be returned to OEM using trail side tools.

@@shredstoneadventures I got a 21 690 and have done this mod with a nut behind the sensor. Havent ridden it yet but everyone who has tried it has had no problems. Even if you spend the 150 on the dongle? Who is going to want to be switching the dongle back and forth between ABS/TC on and off? The bike Sucks hugely on dirt with ABS and TC. Literally cant stop on gravel or loose dirt. The brakes turn off as the ABS cant deal with any sliding tire. TC makes that 74HP useless, it turns the engine off when the tire spins at all.

Ironically, I’ve just completed a 4,200 mile ride in the US on a 2019 690 where the electronics were my saviour. It has the dongle but for me the ABS and TC were invaluable for the mix of on and off-road (TAT and BDR). The TC especially on the loose, off-camber uphills, for example, where I would simply not have the skill/reaction times to keep things together. Having the option is essential to me rather than disabling. Mine has a Nomad tower which was amazing at keeping the wind blast and noise down. Does the Rade tower work well? It looks a high quality thing but the screen is lower I think. I have the Rade Garage range extender and my average gas mileage was astonishing at 65 mpg (US) vs my buddy’s 50 mpg on his Tiger 900.

That sounds like a great loop! We are looking forward to the TAT in the next couple weeks time (planning to start in Cape Hatteras July 1st). Coming from a dirtbiking background I found the characteristics of the TC to be unpredictable in the sense of power delivery and when you’re able to get the front end in the air or doing “clutch ups”. Pivot turns on steep hills and log hops and what not, are a much easier task, when you know how the bike is going to react. The Rade Garage tower was a game changer when riding highway speed, it cuts down on the wind force against your chest as well as helps with wind buffeting. The additional fuel tank is also well worth the investment for sure! All in all these bikes do an amazing job at what ever you throw at them and some tuning and tweaking for the riders personal preference and they are an absolute weapon! Stay safe and appreciate the feedback!

@@shredstoneadventures I get it. I’m from road/adventure bikes with limited off-road experience or skill. The TC kept me safe to be honest. I couldn’t risk any heroics hence it stayed on. Our routes were very much aimed at less technical trails but on occasion some gnarly, water eroded were a challenge. That said I trashed the rear tyre in 2,500 miles so wasn’t pussyfooting (despite some unkind comments!!). I’m in the UK and bought a 701 Enduro last year and modifying it hence the question on the tower. The better protection of the Nomad will probably win over the nicer Rade being a year round rider. Stay safe too! Best, Ian

I have found my 690 to be a pussycat on any kind of dirt, it has the mellowest power imaginable, unless you wind the revs up higher. There is also map 1 and map 2, map 1 the bike is even mellower. The TC can literally turn the engine off on loose ground when climbing, it wont allow any tire slip. I hate it on dirt. The kickstand can also stop a ride, the sensor can die and thats it, the bike is dead. Has to be trucked out if that sensor dies. Its 89 bucks for a dongle to bypass the kickstand switch. Slavens has it.

@@bradsanders6954 I’d agree with you on the power. It’s easy to deploy. Sure it can bite but it worked for me. The TC never got in the way unlike the Tiger which dumped my buddy 3/4 of the way across a river. Mine got me across but kept it on track elsewhere. The kickstand issue is ridiculous and hardly new. I have the dongle on my 690 but not on the 701 yet. If I was doing anything technical I’m sure the TC and ABS would be an issue but for my needs both were excellent.

So what happens if you need an emergency stop on the sealed road with no ABS? I think the TC is excellent.
@shredstoneadventures

Great question! Most motorcycles weren’t equipped with ABS up until the last few years and it’s up to the rider to “self modulate” the brake application based on the traction of the terrain. In off road scenarios, it’s common practice to lock the back brake up to aid in cornering. As well accelerating out with the back tire spinning. Having ABS and Traction Control active, is a hinderance with off road riding.

TC is excellent. Map 2 with no rear abs works very well for off road. That dongle is worth $100 "for me". Installed a switch to enable and disable the dongle/rear abs. Easily go from no rear to rear abs. $100 for a dongle on a heavily farkled $15,000 bike is not even worth mentioning.

@@shredstoneadventures The fact that old bikes didn't have ABS doesn't mean it's a bad thing, ABS has saved many lives in aircraft, cars, trucks, motorcycles for decades now - it's a proven technology with proven benefits. The factory setup allows you to easily disable it when you're in the dirt - really, how much work is it to press a button? If you want to permanently disable ABS on your bike then that's one thing, advocating that others do it is another. I'm a 690 rider.

@@georgeellison926 glad you are an avid 690 rider and advocate to the factory ABS system. If it works well for your riding style, by all means don’t change what works for you. Just for clarity, this video is for those who ride their enduros the majority of the time off road and where ABS is a hinderance. Deep mud, snow and loose gravel are all areas where ABS does not shine… as study’s have shown. With the temporary delete of spacing out the wheel speed sensor, the ABS system stays off while not required. If a novice rider were to use my bike and didn’t have the ability to self modulate the braking pressure, the spacer can be removed and all systems return to factory. Hope this helps you understand the riding style and environment that we are in and what barriers they create. Ride safe and do what works for you :)

Saving money always puts a smile on my face! 😊 Adjusting the bikes performance and predictability to better suit my riding style, without the added cost of a dongle. In any case that the electronically sensed power governor (Traction Control) would need to be turned on, the temporary spacer can be removed. Cheers and always… ride safe!
