Short sketch that was originally part of the "Hell's Grannies" sketch from Series 1 Episode 8. This sketch was cut from the broadcast episode, presumably for timing reasons.
Many thanks to "The Monty Python Museum" for making this available. Please check out his KZfaq channel for lots more Monty Python rarities.

There's no laughs because these parts weren't filmed before a live audience, they were originally filmed as inserts for the episode and would have been shown to the audience during the taping of the show proper.

@@laservampire This doesn't look like it was filmed as an insert, it looks more like it was taped at the studio.
@laservampire

@@jasobres No, these were definitely from pre-filmed (in the studio, on videotape) inserts which is the only reason they survive (similar to the french "Ovine Aviation" outtakes what Monty Python Museum channel used to have uploaded). Because Hell's Grannies was mostly an outdoor (16mm filmed) sketch, they would have shown it to the studio audience during the studio taping of the rest of the show so as to record their laughter and reactions. It would have been very inconvenient to have the actors in costume and sets built just for a 40 second studio cutaway in the middle of showing the pre-filmed Hell's Grannies sketch to the audience.

@@darthkek1953 hi. Not really - this was not funny, and I understand folk thinking the same of a proportion of their stuff. Not all good, not all bad. Therefore, we can argue about the relative proportions. I will stop there, for fear of turning into 'Mr Logic', a rather good character within the "Viz" magazine here in the UK, where, even today, wildebeeste only rarely are seen sweeping - majestically - to Torquay's distant horizon :)

The Hell's Grannies sketch is pretty famous but I wonder what it is about the British censorship and improvised weapons and ninjas. They always used to remove references to ninjas and banned things like nunchaku for many years. Movies would get censored or put into the video nasty category if they had ninjas or assassin-type weapons. A famous example of this that may be more familar to Gen-Xers is that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had to be changes to Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles when they showed the cartoon in Britain.

While Gilliam's cartoons and some remote sequences outside the studio were shot on 16mm film, the bulk of MPFC is on video, so it's stuck in SD. I read somewhere they've rescanned Terry Gilliams cartoon sequences and they look better.
@OolTube02
@OolTube02 3 жыл бұрын
@@Tmanaz480 Actually most indoor scenes were recorded on video but a lot of the outdoor scenes were filmed on chemical film. That's the way a lot of British TV series were done at the time, probably because expensive video equipment existed in studios but not in portable form. This created a surreal experience, with the 50fps soap opera effect in some scenes but not in others. Also the lighting was noticeably different -- noticeable even to me as a kid, watching a lot of British series with my grandmother at the time. So not just Gilliam's animations might still exist somewhere at a higher resolution.

Hell's Grannies was a sketch about cute little old ladies who turn to crime. It was a parody of news stories about young men who were criminals. This clip shows things that little old ladies might carry, repurposed as weapons. I don't understand the handbag part at the end.

@nigelrg1

@@mikekole Time I replied to something. You make a very good point, unlike the others. Graham was openly gay, and participated in at least one transvestite sketch, where he played an outrageous government Minister in a pink chiffon dress. I can only think that he was unusually tolerant, but it's unreasonable to ask everyone to be like him. Suppose I called all the other commenters here knuckle-draggers, would they think it funny? Two other points. By transvestite, I wasn't referring to the typical Monty Python member dressed up as a woman, with no reference to cross-dressing - that was just their schtick. I meant sketches like the Lumberjack song. And, secondly, transvestites are rarely gay, strange as it may seem.
