Nice! Reminds me of my time in Turpan, including the crazy high temperatures, haha. I preferred daytime snacks of grapes, hami gua and homemade yogurt, but sangza was good for later with a cold drink!

Ha! Yea, it sure can get hot in Turpan during the summer, that's for sure. I wouldn't call sangza a "refreshing snack", but it was still good in the middle of the day 😂

Oh! This Sangzhi is a popular northern Chinese snack, you can find it in Beijing and Tianjin, but the taste might different, usually it is sweet flavor. since so many Chinese mainlander moved to Taiwan at 1949, so I have had it in Taiwan before. Turpan is a very low basin, 100 feet?? below the sea level?? that is one of the reason it is so hot there, the famous "Fire Flame Mountain" 火焰山 is near by. when the monk "Xuan Zhuan" traveled west to India, he made record on his book "大唐西域記“。 that is around 700 AD.
@FarWestChina
@FarWestChina 7 жыл бұрын
That is correct! Turpan is one of the lowest points in the whole world and gets extremely hot. I think Turpan has recorded the hottest temperature on record for all of China.

Yumm, my mouth is watering! I love the insight you give into Xinjiang, especially all its awesome food :D I've also seen Sanzi in Tibet, and they even had a thinner version in this Nanjing fusion restaurant sprinkled over a Western salad to give it a crunch - it really worked! Crunchy goodness.

That's what I've been hearing from people...that it's something they see all over China. I'm not sure what to think - the Uyghur insist that it's their cultural tradition to make this food (and I believe them!) but I wonder if it's origin is elsewhere and it has spread to many different groups. Who knows?!

The homes in Turpan definitely look gorgeous and unique. In India, we do make various flavored versions of Sangza mostly salted or spiced. But sweet is a first! They've got to be delicious. Thanks for sharing this with us!

Wow, this is so fascinating! I love exploring tiny villages, especially when they have such delicious looking traditional food! I live in China too and it's so hard to live here and not gain weight. Everything is fried in oil which is so delicious but not good for the figure :P thanks for sharing! I would love to visit all these places you blog about. Too bad China is too big to see all of.

I've seen something similar in Tianjin, they say it's a local snack there. I think it might have the same name, except the one in Tianjin was a bit darker and maybe thicker? Those noodles look pretty cool. It sure didn't seem like it took them long to make those. That quite the fancy presentation of the finished product. What are they made of? It's good to hear that inside there was a break from the heat. Don't want to get too hot out there.
@FarWestChina
@FarWestChina 7 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure exactly what they're made of, but it's a pretty simple recipe. It doesn't take long to make each small section, but from what they told me, it takes these three ladies a full day to make the three platefuls that would be required for the festival that was being celebrated the following day.

Is sangza sweet, savory or somewhere between? I must say your video series is entirely captivating - you give just enough detail to let the imagination and romance run rampant.
@FarWestChina
@FarWestChina 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Dennis! I'd say it's somewhere in between. It's not sweet, but they don't add salt to it either. It's just a crunchy snack/noodle/something. Personally, I wish I could dip it in something, but that's not the traditional way to do it 😂

Sangza is usually eaten with salty milk tea. U cant say it’s gross until you’ve tried it. It’s one of my favourite breakfasts ever. U break the sangza and you put it in the tea in a bowl and you wait until it’s soft to eat it with a spoon with milk tea also on the spoon. It’s delicious! I’m an uyghur living in Australia 😊

@sam clark And then there are the boundaries. The 1735 d’Anville map shows “China proper” as a landmass separate from areas like Xinjiang, Tibet, Mongolia and Manchuria. The island of Hainan is drawn in a different color, as is Taiwan. This depiction is utterly at odds with how history is taught here.

You imply that these cool courtyards are now only on the outskirts of the city. All Uyghur houses used to be this way. Culture destroyed. Are they stll allowed to make Sangza even, since were only associated with religious Qurban festival?
