You know what's interesting about Erewhon... it's name is derived from a novel of the same name by Samuel Butler, a novel that depicts a fictional country that, upon first glance, appears to be a utopia, but definitely isn't. Butler got the name by spelling "nowhere" backwards (although transposing a letter), as if to say such a place isn't real. This novel was specifically depicted to satirize Victorian society regarding several matters. "For example, according to Erewhonian law, offenders are treated as if they were ill, whereas ill people are looked upon as criminals. Another feature of Erewhon is the absence of machines; this is due to the widely shared perception by the Erewhonians that machines are potentially dangerous." If Butler's Erewhon was deemed a society to satirize Victorian society, so too the Californian grocer Erewhon, frequented and partnered with by Californian royal families such as the Kardashians and Biebers, can be deemed its own "society" to satirize Californian society. That said, the joke here, at least for now, is on you, the plebian wagie who would entertain spending $22 on a Hailie Bieber smoothie, with the punchline being you thinking you can be a part of "them", the Californian royal families. As far as you're concerned, the grocery store Erewhon is just as much "nowhere" as the country described in Butler's novel. (I'm also aware that Justin Bieber is Canadian and the Kardashians are Armenian. If that was the fixation you made here, you drastically missed the point)

After watching this i realized Erewhon is just taking rich people for a ride with these ridiculous prices. I mean, $9 for a cheap ass tofu? Come on. What Erewhon fanatics are paying are not the food, but the freedom to not shop around regular people.

Well I think her point is the smoothie has a lot of ingredients so the price makes more sense and pesto is just basil olive oil (I think it has pine nuts and Parmesan?) I think all of it is ridiculous but I understand her point for sure and she keeps mentioning the price so I think she agrees haha

Some of the prices are absolutely wild, but I was a lot more okay with the cost of certain items on this video than I thought I would be. Like, there are gourmet, delicious hot sauces that cost between 10 and 20 dollars. Premade salads and soups are close to that price in most grocery stores. Even the six dollar health shot was average, considering most I’ve seen are 4 dollars. But 20 dollars for almond butter? Absolutely fucking not.

I would never, but here’s how I will justify some things. Imagine you went to a restaurant. You order a pesto dish. How much would that cost you? Add a couple glasses of wine. Now how much? Going back to the pesto, how long and how many dishes can you make from it? Buy any cheap pasta of your choice. Have you wine. Now $21 doesn’t seem so bad. Chances are you’re not going to finish off the jar in one meal. Meanwhile at a restaurant you probably paid much more for 1 dish with pesto, and you didn’t get to take home the leftovers of the pesto jar.

TIL turmeric anything is expensive in America??? I'm in Asia and turmeric costs next to nothing really, fresh or dried or ground. It's a common ingredient when we deep fry chicken or fish so most households use turmeric daily all year round. It's also an ingredient in curries which some cultures consume daily. It's funny that Americans feel it's worth paying more just because it feels exotic lol
