I used to work at a pond management company. When you only see large dead fish it’s typically an oxygen issue. Larger fish require more oxygen therefore they are the first to die when O2 levels are low. This is common problem with small ponds. If the pond does not receive enough wind to blend in oxygen then this will begin to happen. Another possible issue if run off from agricultural fields. Ag fields can run its excess nutrients into the pond. When excess nutrients enters it allows for aquatic plants or a planktonic bloom to grow excessively. This large growth can pull most of the oxygen from the pond leading to death of the fish (the large ones first). To solve this issue you can install aerators. It’s also helpful to throw in bacteria such as nutrisob. Nutrisorb is a maintenance bacteria that consumes excess nutrients in your pond. This bacteria should be added all year around to keep the pond in good shape. Nutrisorb also will help deplete the pond from building up muck at the bottom keeping it from filling in over time. Hope this helped!👍🏼 aerators are a lot more effective than fountains.

Surface aerators better than bottom based! Approximately 1HP per surface acre of water. Don't do a fountain...they are pointless for aeration (mostly)

Build a small bait pond, stock it once with the shad, sunfish etc., keep all predatory fish out and you'll be able to stock your bass pond with baitfish whenever you need to. Put a feeder on it and you wont have to worry about the catfish eating all the feed like your big pond, self sustaining bait year round to help grow your trophy bass! You can turn it into a little mini series while you're building it.

I used to maintain a pond on our farm (we called them stock tanks) and one thing I can tell you is important for a healthy pond is to provide aeration. You have fished ponds where you have seen a fountain in approximately the center. You do not have to go that big but some type of fountain that is constantly raining down on your pond will help. Food is important structure is important but I would say aeration is paramount to a healthy pond. After I added the fountain to our pond I never saw another dead fish. Of course we were feeding them as well. You do have the advantage of natural water feeding your pond but still the area of your pond is large and the natural flow of water is not enough to support it. When you have heavy rains the oxygen level goes up but when you have long periods without rain your oxygen level drops. Keep up the videos I love them.

I’m glad your doing something to try and resolve the issue in the back yard pond but if it’s an air problem you’ve just made it 100x worse. all the bait fish will drain the air out. Need a fountain or something ASAP

You should do a fountain. I think you should try and test the water aswell as fix the oxygen levels before you introduce thousands of new fish. What if your water does have an ICK? You just transferred that to all of those fish

A tip from Sweden…tie alot of tree branches together and sink them with stones then put them at different places at your pond! Going to work much better when the minnows has to swim all over but got protection at more places…

I will soon be on my journey to starting my own homestead and you have really been an huge help on how o can design my pond and what I should use it for. You and another fellow they guy mad e 5 acre pond with a bunch of cool things and hide outs for the fish it was really cool. Hopefully you did gizzard shad because they’re much more cold tolerant than threadfin shad. I had a buddy who stocked 4,000 threadfin shad in his pond last October because he thought if he stocked them in October they’d spawn in just a few months but that freeze we had killed 100% of them lol.

@@EasyModeFishing if we ever make it to freezing it’s only for a few hours. Not long enough to hurt anything. I live 30 miles from this pond and lived here all my 54 years so I know what I’m saying. We almost never get to the upper 20’s and very very rarely get in low 30s. We don’t have snow either. It doesn’t get that cold here

Might add a couple of 12 volt aerators. Fence post in the pond, with a sprinkler mounted on top. Hose from the sprinkler to a 12 volt boat bilge pump, on a floating rig, tied to the post, at water level. Wire to the bank and hooked to a 12 volt solar set up.

It is an awful idea that is a primo spawning area for bass, and all the baitfish will learn s they can’t get eater there and they will have the same problem. Tried it in my pond and it didn’t work.

I think they already dumped a bunch in his pond before, but most bodies of water have them naturally anyways so they were probably already in there especially with it being an older pond.

I think solar fountain installation fits the budget more than the cost of an electrical installation from your barn .

Trenching in a a secondary power line is cheap, dosent even have to be that deep since it's not primary. Only thing is it has to be GFI protected, they could easily do this job them selves just rent a small trencher 12-18" deep home depot should even rent trenchers that small!

Take a pallet and wire a couple Christmas trees to it and use empty 3ltr pop bottles to float it like a raft it provides cover and shade for the baitfish and bass
