Hey everyone and welcome back to more Railroads Online! Today we are going to deliver the needed wood supplies to the iron mine in order to get production going! Since this is going to be a heavy trip I decided to invite Dapper back to help run 2 engines on either side of the train to make sure we have the power to get up the steep mountain passes! ‪@DapperEcho‬

I’ve been playing on a server where they have everything setup perfect to the point that when they have big running sessions, they have players who specifically play the role of yard master managing different yards at different industry’s with multiple locomotive teams bringing loaded cars down to the smelter, giving the loaded cars to the iron team, taking the empty’s back up, and once the team clears the yard loop, the next team takes their fully loaded train down and the cycle repeats shuffling Empty’s up, loaded ones down, bringing loaded iron rail cars up, etc. it’s quite amazing .

as for a new locomotive, i would recommend either the Cooke Mogul 2-6-0 or the Class 70 2-8-0. keep in mind that neither of these two locomotives are particularly fond of tight curves tho, especially the Class 70. if you want something specifically made for mountain grades, the Climax or Heisler are both good options (tho they currently have a wheelslip bug when you go above 80% and 60% regulator, respectively). They're slow, but they have a lot of pulling power and their design allows them to traverse tighter curves than a normal steam locomotive one more thing. IRL, the reverser controls the timing of steam injection into the cylinders, with 100% and -100% being used at low speeds to get the train moving, and closer to center being used at higher speeds for better efficiency (i can discuss the technical aspects in more detail if you want). this function is not yet modeled in-game tho, but it will be coming

Put betsy at the front, and betsy 2 after 1/3of the back between your waggons. When the engines are at the front and at the back, youre more likely to derayl. If you put an engin in the midfle of the train, you give less stress on the waggons, so uphill is the force evenly distributed, and downhill is breaking also evenly destributed

Yes, using full regulator does use more water, because your using more steam, therefore more water has to be evaporated to make that steam. In real life the flying Scotsman locomotive used to do non-stop express runs from London to Edinburgh, because these runs were fast so they used a lot of water, in order to avoid stopping to fill up with water they built long troughs filled with water in between the rails and they used to lower a pipe from the engine and suck up water at speed, in order to fill up the tanks.

Since I'm not seeing others commenting on this, thought I would simply explain what the "reverser" does. The reverser controls the movement, or more specifically, the timing of the valve. When in the neutral position the valve barely rocks side to side letting no steam pressure into any cylinder. Depending on the direction of the lever, will change the order of direction the valve moves in relation to the cylinder. To go forward, it will align pressure into the front of the cylinder when the stroke is at the bottom of the wheels. To go backwards, it will align pressure into the front, but when the stroke is at the top of the wheels, allowing to move in the reverse direction. Now to the main point that is not understood, the reverser also changes the timing, which means it can allow for more speed. Advancing the timing, aka letting the valve go to the 100% open position earlier/faster lets a higher pressure into the cylinder when at the top of the stroke, meaning more force on the piston in it's stroke (more power). This is why when you have the reverser at a lower percentage, you can actually gain more traction as you are putting less torque on the wheels with less sudden pressure on the cylinders.
@breenseaturtlegaming9990
@breenseaturtlegaming9990 2 жыл бұрын
So when you put less torque on the wheels it has less wheel spin since you use a lot of horsepower on steel wheels which don’t provide a lot of the tracks, the reason why they use steel wheels is because it saves water

@daandenhartog6950
@daandenhartog6950 2 жыл бұрын
Yess! I already commented this but it seems that it wasn't noticed. So if you want to start slowly without wheelspin you should put the reverser at a 100% with only a little regulator. This also causes the characteristic "chuff" sound as the steam escapes the cylinder still at high pressure. Then to add something: As you put the reverser at let's say 25% the steam is only let into the cylinder for the first quarter of the stroke. The the flow is cuttof and the steam expands naturally, which improves efficiency as the steam can provide more useful work while it is expanding.

Going to agree with the others suggesting to get a geared locomotive. The Climax is well worth the money, as is the Heisler once you get the hang of how to use it in its current state. Best thing about them is how much more wood and water they can hold, you can build up so much more pressure and go so much further, it really is just a massive quality of life improvement. They are slower, but the trade off is they basically never stop unless you derail them.

The lumber grind is real for the iron mine! I suggest making a rail from the valley that goes to the smelter and cut direct to the right instead of going down to the smelter and then back. The amount of time save is pretty decent! It take some about 25 minutes round trip for 12 cars of planks/beams instead of the near 40-50 minutes taking the smelter route! So you'd be arriving at the iron mine from the opposite end of the valley instead of the way you are arriving now! I have a similar track and I use that long 3% grade for running iron down to the smelter. But I use the other track for lumber and ti takes FOREVER. It takes about 12 trips with 12 cars to fill up the iron ore reserves. That 25 minutes x12. So about 300 minutes or 6 hours. It's a grind for 290 iron ore!

kAN: The regulator acts as a throttle and controls the pressure of steam entering the cylinders, the reverser acts kind of like a transmission and makes the engine operate more efficiently at high speeds. Bringing the reverser towards the middle of the control reduces the amount of time steam is admitted to the cylinders. The way you use it is while your train is in a steady state (not accelerating or climbing) have the regulator wide open, and the reverser close to center. When you climb or start to slow down, increase the reverser in the direction you are wanting to go

Kan, you are right about the top speed issue. (Live steam model engine machinist) The reverser does act gears, kind of, reducing the reverser is called "stepping up," it increases the lead time in the valves and moves the cutoff ahead, this overall causes less steam to enter the cylinders at the same speed, and thus creates less torque, but uses less steam. Also steam gets it's energy from expansion more than just pressure (like running an engine on compressed air), so the early cutoff allows the steam to expand more and extract more heat energy from the steam. TLDR same top speed while using less steam.
@ginjaninja6258

Keep in mind that there are many types of valve gear, this applies mainly to the Stephenson valve gear (most mountain locos like the porters and climax), and the Walschaerts valve gear (most high speed main line locos). And the latter has much more of this effect as it was needed for the boiler to be able to keep up with steam use at these speeds.

So, for advanced train stuff, I'm wondering if there's a sweet spot in firebox temp where you can maintain over 100 pressure without hitting the blowoff at 120. To me it seems like you might be overdoing on the firebox temp and consuming more water that way, as when the water pressure's under 120, the white jet of steam isn't rendered, which leads me to believe that you're consuming more water than you need to by running the firebox at max temp at all times. I won't even pretend to suggest it's actually viable, maybe burning away the water rapidly is how these engines were run at various points, but it does seem to be a major source of water loss if you keep boiling it away without turning it into power.

Well.. you are right, but unfortunately you will always end up with the blowoff or loosing to much pressure. However, you can control bow much blow off happens in a way by adjusting just how much fuel your throwing in. The reverser is incremented to save water by controlling the amount of steam that goes to the pistons. The faster the train goes the less steam is required to move so when you pick up speed you can reduce the reverser to save steam. When starting from dead stop or going up hill you will want to open the reverser more. A video likened a fully open reverser to first gear.

@loneside4912
@loneside4912 2 жыл бұрын
With starting, you actually want the reverer percentage to be reduced, which if you have it at a high percentage, there is more torque applied to the piston at the top/bottom end of each stroke, which means you have more pontential of breaking the wheels loose, and reducing traction, so reducing the percentage would better incromentally add pressure into the cylinders and reduce wheel slip. When the reverser however, is at 100%, the valve is faster to move at the fully open position, allowing a greater flow of steam throughout the stroke to keep up with higher speeds, and also increases power when the piston travel is at top/bottom. The reverser at 0% just means the valve barely moves, letting very little, to no steam in the cylinders.

Basically, the reversing leaver makes cutoff to the engine. The advantage is that you can change between forward and reverse very quickly as is needed in, for example if you want to shut the engine fast. In real life, only disadvantage is that the leaver must stay resting at one of the notches. Also, you can make fine adjustments to the cutoff to make almost perfectly running and economy trip if possible. It works basically like this: Set the reversing leaver to desired position (lets say 10 degree from neutral toward forward, push the regulator leaver slowly until you start moving, then adjust the reversing leaver until you gain some speed. Add the reg up/down if needed or if you push the revering leaver all to the "nose diving" position 100%). Basically the leaver is the setting letting you fine tuning the fuel consumption vs power vs speed. Feel free to experiment :D Try listen the song from Fred Eaglesmith - Back There :D It would be nice to see the other side of the canyon on the way back, i personally didn't build on the opposite side of it. Can't wait to see the next episode, maybe to see some other engines in the composition in the future. Keep up the great work kAN.

I've counted the firewood on the Porter, there is approx. 45 firewood in there. *it's actually not the water, but the firewood supply that goes away quick.. since way more water is turned into steam as the firewood is burnt up.. It's not the top speed that 'fiddling with the reverser' changes, but if you have less reverser open, you're going to let less steam into the cylinders, thus higher efficiency is achieved. The two hings this game is STILL missing are tunnels and MALLETS.

I go to the iron mine with 10 beam cars (x3 = 30), 5 lumber cars (x6 = 30) and 3 empty hoppers (x10, so they will take the 30 iron ore produced). That is 18 cars which I pull with the Mogul up a 3% grade all the way (so, no power problems). Never leave any cars at the iron mine because you will just have to go back up to get them. So, I return with the 3 full hoppers and 15 empty flatbeds to the smelter. I leave the 3 hoppers on a siding at the smelter and use the flatbeds elsewhere until I am ready to go the iron mine with beams and lumber again (picking up the hoppers at the smelter on the way).

6 percent is nice, that's seen quite often on mountain narrow gauge railroads, and RR Online looks like a mountain narrow gauge railway. And no in reality that doesn't require the cogwheel.

I've watched the water consumption with different reg. settings. It appears the water does run down slower with lower reg. and faster with higher reg. This was before any updates, but I haven't paid attention lately.

The reverser won't affect your top speed, but it will affect how much water you use during the cruise phase of the movment. Would help you conserve water

[For the route Smelter to Iron Mine] I tried going to the other side of the Valley to kAN, can say with certainty, don't do it. The bridges have height limits so you can't bridge over gaps that are too large and you then have to hug some very bad terrain in order to get there. Wasted about 3-4 hours on that side. Later just took a couple hours for the side that kAN went, you can quite nicely keep that at 3% with minor turns all the way from the smelter, if you use a lot of bridges. TL:DR Go the side that kAN went, but use a lot of bridges to keep it at 3%

honestly everyone is complaining about trying to keep lke 3% grade max... but in real life its 1.5% standard and mountain passes are no more than 1.8%.. soooo i made my track to the iron mine extra long and stuck to 1.5%. its almost done and i should have no problems keeping speed with the Eureka and 10 loaded cars!

BTW the next time your coal trucks fall off the cliff, they are probably just stuck in the trees. If you cut down the trees you can rerail them as long as there is track near enough.

I use the heinsler and go rught after the mountain pass at a steady 3% incline. That way i pull 15 18 or 21 cars fully loaded up to the iron mine. 1 car lumber needs 2 cars beams for 6 iron ore. I aim for 10 hoppers per run so having 15 cars is ideal for 30 iron. Run up 4 times and enjoy 120 iron. Yeah somehow i mess up and take 103 or 105 iron out of the chute when loading the hoppers :)

I don't understand, my betsy can haul 15 cars (12 flatbeds 3 hoppers) to the iron mine with a constant 4-5% grade and it handles it fine, I also had a problem where I didn't turn my car brakes off and when I realised the train ran fine after with loads of cars.

developer needs to add coloured markers so you can scout ahead, place a marker for a potential track, that way you don't forget where your going as well, probably will be added at somepoint but would be super helpful.

Hey kan, might I suggest the Cooke Mogul for your first big engine? Its like a bigger more powerful version of the betsy and its intended to climb steeper tracks from what ive seen so far. Because its a thinner wheelbase then the other big locomotives, you dont need to alter your track much if you have sharper turns

I'm enjoying this series, but so far the most common thing I've come to expect is kAN running out of fuel and only noticing when the boiler pressure drops, usually while climbing a hill. I wonder if his car has the low fuel light on most of the time... I joke, though. Keep it up -- really tempting me to get this game and lose entire days building rail lines!

If you do what I did I fallowed the Water Fall River for like 100 miles lol the elevation starts to rise on the way up river so if you start a 2 % incline at the right spot after the water fall you can find a Snake Path cut all the way to the Coal Mine from the River. I had to start at the Coal mine and fallow this Cut path all the way to the river. Then just fallow the river down stream.

So my readings, adjusting the reverser should reduce your water consumption. I'll also add that your blow off valve is always on, so better fire management could reduce water usage, but I can agree that's very tedious in a game.

Hi I’m a huge train fan. I would like to let you know you and your partner should operate two locomotives up front for extra power. Back in the 1800s that’s what they did. Even still do to this day with the modern power locomotives. The term is called double heading I believe. With that you can run either long heavy trains on a flat plain, or a heavy freight up steep grades. Either way more power more cars, more cars more money. I’m sure you already know of this, but my point is run double heading to go faster steep grades. But for me clearly, it’s totally up to you. I do love your videos and I want to see more a lot more. Sincerely Dakota reed.
