Lambing continues, but Heidi the Hereford was calving also. Not the best day for Heidi. Not the best day for me. Hard to lose them, harder to watch mom lose them.

As a relatively new subscriber, I have been going back to view your vlogs and I have now decided that, as I can’t get enough of these lambs and even the mamas themselves, I am starting at the very beginning! Have just watched Vlog 1 and now I have plenty of catching up to do so daily dosages of sheep therapy for a while now 😅❤ Thank you so much Sandi for being my safe place on my mental health journey. Yes, there are bad days as with all animals, but it is your love and gorgeous smile that takes the edge off. ❤❤

I’ve been away from home for 7 years in the army and this year I came home cause my dad had a stroke. Sooo this year was my first solo lambing experience from start to finish. Your channel helped me so much, you don’t sugar coat anything and it made me feel better about the bad outcomes; knowing that other people are going through the same situations. Thank you and I’ll keep watching. Jess, 25, from the UK!

Been here for many, many years. When I joined I remember looking at some past vids, but I didn't do a deep dive. I'm doing it now. I wish I could recall when I first subbed, but it's been fun to go back in time to see how far you've come! I see you bottle feeding, and my thought is, "just put them on the nanny!" then I recalled seeing the vid when you got the nanny, and I can honestly say it's been one of the best purchases ever!

Such a bummer about the calves 😞. 280 days give/take of waiting with great excitement & anticipation, only to have such a let down. The grief is REAL, I absolutely can relate. You know what though? It's NEVER lost on me just how many times during lambing (or ANY time you are using your fence panels for that matter) that I watch you swing one leg over the top followed by the other. Must be hundreds upon hundreds of times! You are truly a panel-straddling pro, as it's become such a natural, well practiced manuever...you sure make the very taxing, repetitive physical demands of caring for/managing livestock look effortlessly graceful! It's 2am, I'm here AGAIN stuck in a Sandi Brock vlogathon, and I'm not even sorry for keeping the light on despite the snoring human next to me! #inspiration #coffeecanfixthat 😉

Ive been watching your channel for probably 4 months now maybe a little longer but been binge watching during this covid19 situation (NOLA) and found myself starting from the beginning and I’m so glad I did! You have actually inspired me to really think about how I want to spend my work day/week/life and soooo much of our time. This quarantine from work has provided time for reflection and self care and the opportunity I needed to put those gears into motion. It’s hard to find the time and energy to do that when your IN the grind. So for that I am thankful and I’m gonna ride this wave of change! Hopefully soon I’ll be doing something that I love everyday as well! Anyway, I appreciate how genuine you are. I love that you let us see all of your experience as you grow as a farmer. The struggles, accidents, mistakes and successes as well as all the beauty. You are awesome, hilarious, and I hope your channel continues to thrive as much as you want it to! Thanks for being real and thanks for sharing! Lindsey

Found your vlog recently and I have been going back by lambing season and I decided I needed to go back to the beginning... One thing I learned from the Iowa Dairy Farmer is that male/female twins tend to have a sterile female so even though it was heartbreaking to lose those calves likely the female would have been sterile anyways. It's amazing to look back at the beginning. You have come so far and are so amazing.
@surrealfarm
@surrealfarm 8 ай бұрын
When you have twin calves of two different genders, the female is sterile and is called a ''freemartin''. She's sterile because too much testosterone has passed to her through the placentas, and prevented her reproductive organs from forming completely. The only other animal that I know of that also does this with twins is the alpaca. Fortunately, twins with alpacas are much rarer than twins with cattle.

Sorry about the calves. On starting the ewes milk flow, I find that a warm washcloth calms the ewe, and helps open the flow. The ewes stop moving and actually hunch their backs upon touch of the warm wash cloth to the udder. The warm water helps open the flow. Your operation is so clean, I know it is not taking much. We have red clay soil here, and it can be tough. I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.

HOW SAD, TO SEE YOUR HEART BREAKING. IT'S A BAD FEELING, TO SEE A PROBLEM, AND NOT BE ABLE TO FIX IT. MY STEPFATHER GOT ME INTO 4-H DAIRY WITH A GUERNSEY HEIFER CALF, WHEN I WAS 14. THAT HEIFER MORPHED INTO AN ENTIRE DAIRY, FOUR YEARS LATER. WE BOUGHT A SMALL HERD OF GUERNSEYS, AND GRADE HOLSTEINS, THAT HAD, ACCIDENTALLY, BEEN SUPER-OVULATED. WE HAD SO MANY SETS OF TWINS! DAD DIDN'T BUDGET FOR A VET, SO I ENDED UP LEARNING HOW TO READ THE LIMBS, UNSCRAMBLE, AND JACK THEM OUT. IT WAS A WILD, AND ODDLY MAGICAL SEASON. AS SOON, AS, WE WERE USED TO SAVING THEM, I GOT TO PUT MY A.I. SKILLS TO WORK. THE FIRST CONFIRMED PREGNANCY BROUGHT A HUGE SENSE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT. I MISS MY FARM, AND MY CATTLE, AND THE BODY, THAT COULD DO THE WORK. I LOVE HOW YOUR SHEEP SING ME TO SLEEP. YOUR COMPASSION FOR THEM IS A BALM. (I DO NOT YELL. I JUST TYPE BIG. MY EYES ARE AS WRECKED AS THE REST OF MY BODY.)

Merida Munn when you have twin calves and one is male, sometimes the males testosterone can affect the girl, making her sterile . That's what a freemartin is.

Sandi, I grew up on a dairy farm. When you have a breech calf, 60% of the time, there are twins. If the first calf is breech, 60 % of the time there is a second calf. Get the first calf out quickly then feel for a second calf. Of course call a vet if you need help. Hope this information helps you in the future. Otherwise, I think you do a great job with your livestock. 💖

Thanks Kimberly... Definitely new to this beef world, so did not know what to do. Calling the vet was the right choice, just wish I had checked her through the night.

Sandi Brock Do you have a calf puller? I am skinny like you but short. It is hard for us women to pull calves because we just don’t have the upper body strength a man does. I pulled hundreds of calves with a puller. It would be well worth the investment. They are not too expensive.
@ffwife1210
@ffwife1210 5 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with the twin statistic and calf puller ... Plus, if you have a female and male twins, the female is most likely a free marten which means she's sterile. Any dead animal on a farm is a crushing blow but at least you saved the mom.
