Find out how you can upgrade the $200 family gaming PC we created earlier this year with a new power supply and graphics card to play video games.
Product Links: (these links support this channel!)
24 to 8 pin adapters from Amazon -
was $11 = geni.us/tng-de...
was $14 = geni.us/tng-de...
Sceptre C30 / 200hz - geni.us/tngdc
(my favorite ultrawide right now)
XFX RX570 8GB - geni.us/YukKD
(very solid graphics card for cheap!)
EVGA 500W Power Supply - geni.us/tng-ev...
(similar to the power supply in this video)
Crucial MX500 1 TB SSD - geni.us/tng-ss...
(my favorite SSD!)

Not at all. When unplugged the power supply has only 12 volts and 5 volt DC. As long as your not dissecting it - modern power supplies are perfectly safe

shoot, me too! I was at the MicroCenter Builder Desk and they were like yeah Dell uses a proprietary motherboard and I had already bought a PSU semi modular and was bugging out over the small four pin plug under the PSU on the motherboard and didnt realize it was an 8 pin that split in two to fit.

For around $245, I was able to get a Dell Optiplex 7010 i7 3770, 450w PSU, Nvidia GTX 1660 super, 1 Tb HHD mass storage with 120 SSD boot and primary drive, 16gb DDR 3 ram, and a Bk008 pure rock slim CPU cooler, runs most modern games at 160-220 FPS all day long at 3.5 Ghz.

You can relocate/remove the lower drive bays for a larger GPU. Don’t forget about extra cooling mainly intake. Remember that anything you build in this case will benefit from it.
@TheNetGuy
@TheNetGuy 4 жыл бұрын
Great idea. I didn’t see that they were easily removed - do you have to cut them out?
@SOLDADITO76
@SOLDADITO76 4 жыл бұрын
Yes the bracket/tabs would need to be removed. The bottom of the case stock will fit a GPU with two fans but not three, so anything bigger than a GTX 980 will be to long. So say you have a video card with two fans they are right up against the hard drive cages, which means it fits but there is no incoming air flow, which is no good for any after market GPU. Remove the drive bays and you now have room for a 240mm fan in the front. You could easily relocate your hdd/ssd somewhere else. You will have to remove the two dimples in the case and flatten a raised area to get the fan flat. A none static fan will work best, because a static fan will make whistling sound because for the lack of hole in the case. Me, I like to have faster air flow so I made more holes in the case and used a static fan. I have seen this similar thing in a video, I’ll try and get the link. Not sure how to add the link but there is three videos on a Optiplex build, and those can be found on “The Game Bench’s” channel also”nomadben” has a video on his channel.

One thing I'd change here is the power supply. The W1 is - to put it bluntly - a terrible unit. Faulty protections, cheap components, and group regulation. It also exploded the HardwareBusters review of it (ironically, it died from overdraw despite advertising itself as having over current protection.) If you're going to flip, have some decency, don't give a newbie to computers who doesn't know any better a power supply which isn't even likely to make it past its three year warranty period.

I got a quad core i5 Dell 9020 mt with 16gb of ram (minus a hard drive) at the surplus shop for $25. Then my heart sunk when I seen the proprietary PSU. I guess getting it going first with Windows by adding a cheap drive would be the first step and then upgrading the bios? before I transfer my superior items from my core 2 duo rig. And the little 24 pin to 8 pin cable is gonna work, right? Cross my fingers.

Done this shit years ago it’s best value on market get a 9010 with i7 3770 and you won’t need the 24 pin adapter also buy yourself a ssd and add it as your boot drive it’s a must in today’s world there 20$ now days And just go ahead and buy a gtx 1060 6gb single fan for $120 and get the most out of it for best bang for buck playing 1080p at 120 fps in most games with setting on high it’s able to be a serious gaming pc on the cheap The psu do like this guy anything over 450 watts that’s a name brand. Psu ... Corsair ,evga,Thermaltake...just buy best deal one that is from reputable company is mainly it shouldn’t be more than $40 Optiplex i73770 16gb ddr3 $150 eBay 1060 6gb $125 Ssd 128gb $20 Psu $40 Roughly $350 and you will have a great pc for years and play any game at high refresh rate 1080p you can game the triple a titles on 4K low setting on your big screen tv and it’ll be way better than a console as far as quality.

Just a note about why dell uses a special cable on the 9020. when they changed from the 9010, which uses standard atx, to the 9020, they moved the +5V rail to the mainboard. The Power supply only supplies +12 and -12V. changing the power supply not only will change the connector, but will move the 5v off the Mainboard back on to the Power supply. just a little factoid about why.

Came with a 4th gen Core i5, 8GB DDR3 1600 RAM, 500GB HDD, on board Intel Graphics but with USB 3.0 and SATA 3.0 as well as PCIe 3.0 bus architecture (very important for future upgrading the system.) It came with a Windows 7 COA. Now, at 18 months later, the system now has a Core i7 4790 4 core/8 thread CPU at 3.6GHz base clock speed, 24GB of DDR3 1600 RAM, 120GB SSD boot drive, 1TB HDD, Blue-Ray burner drive, a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050ti low profile w/4GB GDDR5 VRAM, a PCIe WIFI dual channel add on card running at 5G speeds and Windows 10 v1909 ALL running on the stock proprietary 300 watt power supply - and I managed to get it all together for about $350 for everything! It's quiet, stable and stupid fast! It will run GTA V at max settings with a solid 60fps at 1080p pushing a 44" 1080p smart TV through HDMI. Rise of the Tomb Raider runs at a respectable 40 to 60fps at 1080p on medium to low settings. This little guy has been my daily driver and one of the best systems I've ever had. It can shred through the entire Steam library without breaking a sweat. Pre-builts are not a bad way to go to save a lot of money to build a system but you must do some research and homework to find the best deals on upgrade components and there are some limitations such as no real CPU over-clocking as well as case constrictions and power consumption limits on stock PSUs. Another problem I've face with slightly older pre-builts is lack of BIOS and/or driver support for some newer components you might want to install so do your research before you buy that RTX 2070.

All I bought was a 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch HHD mounting bracket, an extra SATA cable and SATA power splitter cable and a DMS-59 to Dual VGA cable with an extra VGA cable ($30). I also already had Windows 10. It's a great KZfaq, BitTorrent and paying bills PC.*

@@johanlundberg8449 Thanks Johan - I've been checking it out for sure. It looks like 6 pin power has reverse polarity diodes to show the amber trouble LED vs. white "on" LED. People have been able to get it working by jumpering two of the pin sets and hooking the power switch to the rear pins. I'm trying to preserve the front panel audio and USB2 headers - but that may be harder. Thank you!
@TheTalonts
@TheTalonts 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheNetGuy - it should be possible to use a white and yellow LED wired 180, or pull the orange/white from the stock power switch, to preserve the diagnostic codes. Otherwise, if you ever have a problem, you'll need to keep the stock switch and wiring to troubleshoot with. I'm not sure why so many people go through so much trouble to replace the stock audio/USB, as it really shouldn't be THAT hard to mold it into a drive faceplate or the case front and retain ALL the stock connections with no F1 error worries. Honestly, if I ever rip one of my 9020s apart, I'll probably just mold the front I/O AND the power switch into the new case. It will let me inset the power switch to reduce chances of bumping it. FYI - the 9020 can use the E3-1225v3 CPU, and probably the 1230v3. One of my 9020s has the former, came that way from an auction, and works fine with it. I'm about to build the second 9020 with an i5-4590 and compare the performance.

This is a good video for if u plan on installing a more power hungry card to a system like this. But u could have also just have gotten a slot powered GPU that wouldn't require a 6 pin or 8pin GPU adapter and game as well for even cheaper if u got a used GPU like an rx460/560, gt1030, 750ti, GTX 950, gtx 1050, or 1050ti. This way you wouldn't have to change out the PSU. That PSU is pretty decent for a lower watt PSU.

I have a Dell 7010 from the prior year that has a standard 24 Pin ATX connector for the motherboard, so my new power supply didn't require any adapter. @@TheNetGuy I've already done a transplant and the front panel header isn't standard and doesn't even have the same number of pins for the power switch. Not to mention you lose SATA ports (the BIOS just stops seeing one of the ports) if the front USB/Mic/Headphone aren't connected. So for now mine looks like a FrankenDell. Not a big deal since I only use it for a (headless) server that runs 24/7. But hey, I have room for more drives now and the ones that are in there have better cooling.

If you're good at soldering you can open the power supply and cut off and cap the unused wires inside. You could cut off the old power connection and wire it inside the unit to the appropriate wires. and you wouldn't need the adapter. Also I would use the sata wires from the new power supply and you could custom shorten them to fit, And remove the unused molex wires and whatever else you don't' need. If your good you could identify the different power rails and route one to just the GPU and one to the CPU separately. I have a crimper for the motherboard connectors and some crimps and have made some really clean power supply upgrades. I think the machine will run cooler without a ton of wires unused stuffed in them. Just sayin' Mike

😬 the adapter has some sort of circuitry in it from the good ones I’ve seen. Not sure if they are protection circuits or otherwise, but I always worry about permanently changing things due to warranty/etc. 🤷🏻‍♂️
@rockvillemike6062
@rockvillemike6062 2 жыл бұрын
In case you want to know, the circuity in the adapter is a voltage booster. The standby voltage on your average power supply, (the purple wire) Is +5v. On the dell 3020 power supply the standby voltage is +12v. What I've done on the upgrade I did, was to purchase a voltage booster circuit board, (it was like 3 or 4 dollars)_ and bolted it to the side of the power supply, (get the one with the bolt holes and the Led readout which can be switched off after it's set), to raise the +5v standby current to +12 volts. I routed the wires through drilled holes in the PS so that all that comes out of the unit is the wires on the original plug which I connected inside the PS unit. And I used the PS's wires to connect the hard drives and CD. All the other wires can be removed if not needed, or tailor fit for the box. Though It may be beyond you to do this, and please don't attempt this unless you have the requisite skills, others may have the skill, and the interest, to do this clean PS upgrade. Otherwise, good A+ informative Video. Just sayin' Mike
