bam6972 - Thank you so MUCH !!! My wife's Dell Inspiron 1525 kept overheating and shutting down. I followed your video word for word it, was like having you next to me as I removed the heat sink and cleaned out her computer. I found the thermal paste at Radio Shack. The amount of dust inside was amazing. Thanks again for taking the time to make a great instructional video. My wife's computer is running great now. You Rock !!!

I had this issue for several months and i was really planning to sell my laptop. Your video saved me. Ordered a thermal paste through ebay, used alcohol swabs from medical store to clear out the dirt. Worked just fine and its not shutting down anymore. You've saved me around Rs 2000 from sitting at the other part of the world. Thanks to Technology.

I just bought my 1525 for 40 bucks and another 18 to upgrade to 4G. When replacing the RAM is saw your video to clean the fan. Surprise, mine looked just like yours. Now I am sure it will run cooler. I thought it was quite warm setting on a flat board on my lap. Thanks a lot.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video. My Inspiron 1525 was overheating and shutting off, and this told me exactly what I needed to do. I pulled out a block of compacted dust maybe a little smaller than Charlie Chaplin's moustache. It's back together and running cool again. The hardest part of the whole process was finding thermal paste at bricks-and-mortar stores like Best Buy and Staples (eventually, I did). But I guess they'd rather you bought a new computer than repair your old one. ;)

Hey - just tried your method - exactly. Used the paste you recommended and got "Goo Gone" -- both thru Amazon for under $20.00. Thanks, it works perfectly. Downloaded a program that shows the internal temps and now, instead of it being 80-90c and shutting down all the time it's 45-55c! Was about to throw away this laptop but it's actually a pretty good model so we'll keep it.

!st unplug the battery and power supply. Don't drop and leave screws in unit. If the heat sink compound is still paste you can get away with not changing. But if the unit has been overheating for awhile then it will be dried and will need changing.

oh and I forgot that sometimes even with lighter fluid.... the thermal paste is actually burned into the heatsink... making riges in the metal making it feel like there is bigger valleys...that's why I always like to use emery cloth to sand out all the imperfections. the thermal paste will take up this space and dissipate heat like normal

Since only a small is broken in the center, and the remaining pad is intact. I just cut a small piece of the new pad and placed it in the center. I hope that was OK? And I applied a tiny bit more than a grain of rice of the paste. The instructions to the paste said that the paste will have to break-in within 200 hours and several thermal cycles. ???
@bam6972
@bam6972 9 жыл бұрын
Morgan C well you should have just cut a whole new square piece and replaced the whole pad. I would take it off again and put a whole new pad on it, instead of piecing it together.

The copper wire device, I took it out like you demonstrated. However, the blue foam didn't stick to the copper wire device. Like yours. It stuck to the PC. Or whatever it is attached to. Sorry I forgot what it is called. As for the thermal paste, I will have to buy some because my computer does need it. What do I do about the blue foam thing? Also, I am looking for the Arctic Silver 5, I found one at walmart online. Is this it? Arctic Silver High Density Poly-synthetic Silver Thermal Compound . It comes in a tube.
@bam6972
@bam6972 9 жыл бұрын
Morgan C yes arctic silver 5. you can also get it on ebay for about 7 bucks. if the blue pad is still on the chip and is fully intact, not ripped or anything, then it will be fine. just don't play with it, or it might rip.

Thanks a lot for this video! was really useful!Just one question.. Is there any other thermal grease or pad to replace on the Inspiron 1525?I'm asking before open it and sabe me some time and problems. I've seen the fan and looks ok.Thanks in advance.Regards,
@bam6972
@bam6972 8 жыл бұрын
I would use arctic silver 5 thermal paste as its the best to my opinion and if you damage the thermal pad on the graphics chip when you remove the heatsink then you will need a new thermal pad for it. you can by thermal pad pretty cheap online like ebay. about 1/16 inch thick should be fine. don't use thermal paste in place of the pad because it wont contact the whole chip with just paste. its at an angle if paste is used. it needs a thermal pad cut to length. most of the time you can get by just reusing the old pad if not damaged.

Thanks a lot for your quick response!! and yes, I damaged the pad when taking the heatsink out.. :( Maybe I was not clear with my question, but I was asking if I should disassebly any other part of my laptop for mantainence? or just with those two (graphics and processor) is ok? Thanks in advance from Argentina!

no other maintenance required. you can clean the fan blades with a q tip and alcohol where its at. its a little tight but a q tip easily does the job. just rotate the fan and swab and rotate and swap again until its clean. no other cleaning is necessary.

How important is it to apply the thermal paste/pads? Can I just clean the dust out and see if that helps with the constant shut-downs?
@bam6972
@bam6972 8 жыл бұрын
+Melissa Holden if you take the heatsink off you must replace the thermal paste. another reason to replace the paste is that it hardens and cracks over time and will not transfer heat very well.

Thanks for this! I realize it was posted a while ago, but I thought I would try to get an answer... When I took the 5 screws out, though, I noticed that the one at the top (labeled "5") took the anchor with it. What I mean is, the part that it is supposed to screw into came unattached from the board underneath. How do I reattach this? Thank you!
@bam6972

yes you have to clean the old off and put new on. if not then it will burn up. thermal paste can be bought cheap on ebay. arctic silver 5 is the best and is only like 7 bucks. but any radio shack will have some. doesn't have the be arctic silver, so any thermal paste will work.

Hello there, so I have a question regarding this awesome laptop. I got one 6 months ago, of course its used, but it was in a wonderful shape, well, it still is, my question though, I believe there is something wrong. It usually idles at 38-48c when i dont do nothing at it, when I play a game I have tough, it reached 58-65c which is completely understandable, since the CPU is under load of 5 clients of said game. Now, 6 months later, it still idles at the same temps, but with said game, it goes up to 62-75c, (It even shut off at 85 once because my cat was blocking air vent, while I was gone) My question is: could it be that my thermal paste is dry? on idle the temps are the same, but since it gets more hot than usual when doing the same tasks from 6 months ago, I would say, that my thermal paste is somewhat dry and needs to be replaced, as It cant keep the cpu cool enough when its loaded with a lot of tasks (No, the fans are clean so far I have seen) but im not sure about it,and since I dont have a replacement paste yet, I dont even want to take the heatsink off, just to check it out.
@bam6972
@bam6972 7 жыл бұрын
most likely its dust and cat dog hair blocking the air flow through the heat sink. take it apart like i did and clean it out and add new arctic silver 5 thermal paste and it will last for years.
@Shadow-uh6jw
@Shadow-uh6jw 7 жыл бұрын
Problem solved! I opened the back and saw that my heatsink was clogged with cat hair and dust, just like in your video. I wanted to avoid removing the heatsink completely, so I don't have to change my thermal compound, so I used a needle, it worked very well, almost half of the heatsink was being blocked, especially the part where the hot air of the processor comes out. no wonder my temps where being 75c + while gaming. Now my idle temps are 39-47 depending, and with heavy gaming not more than 58c-65c with ocassional 67c jumps, just how it was before. Thank you for your video :D

@bam6972
@bam6972 10 жыл бұрын
umm is the fan spinning? also did you plug it in. because if you didn't plug the fan in by accident, it wont turn on. also if you took the heat sink off and didn't replace the thermal paste it could be overheating so fast it wont turn on. also it kinda sounds like maby you didn't plug the video cable in all the way on the mother board. cause a flashing green light might be the hardrive activity light and it may be booting up but nothing on the screen.

bam6972 True, but remember safety first. Stuff is flammable. I read, some old Dell Laptop motherboards can spark caught fire blow up. Thought it was bunch of bs untill I saw a video one blowing up. I recommend use laptop cooling fan plus speedfan to control temps. I got a free Dell inpsiron 6400 core duo with win7 entirepriseN which normally came with xp pro. blazing fast but it does get hot quick but since I installed speedfan temps has gone quite abit.

Diana Cartwright I would highly recommend you replace the thermal paste as well. because it will give you better access to the dust behind the heatsink and be able to clean it a lot better. plus the old paste is probably all dried up and not transferring heat very good after all these years anyway. ebay arctic silver 5 less then ten bucks and you can do about 25 chips with it. do not however take the heatsink off then put it back on without any new paste. it will burn it up.

+Reisen007SCI Nice. But clean that fan please...lol BTW... Using Arctic 5 Thermal Paste or better for the CPU and the GPU is best. I realize the thermal pad is the way it ships to market but., You may benefit from a little mod I can share if your open to suggestions. Maybe it's overkill to do so.., It makes me cringe to see that a "thermal pad" is over an IGC (integrated graphics chip) is the way to button up a "re-paste and clean" procedure. Manufactures DO cut corners all the time.. You mentioned that you liked to playing curtain games, etc. Here a mod for anyone's assurance and stability purposes. Adding extended life for a laptop that can apply it. Desktop PC's have the access to exploit the principle to any chip they want to cool. In this case., We're generally not that critical over the IGC. Although, that heat pipe does reach to the extent of a better way of cooling than the thermal pad. With a little effort. IGC's are still a vital element. Without them, Darkness...lol Point is, there's an opportunity to an improved cooling mod, if your in to it. !!! A properly shaped cooper shim, prepped to be at the right thickness, which accommodates the angles of surface's flatness , is the first step. To make this happen, the variables are the preferred amount of pressure from a fastened heat-pipe assembly. Resolving this measurement includes an observation to the estimated pressure of 2 to 2.5 pounds of direct pressure, the thermal pad had, prior to dis-assembly. In addition... Making sure the heat-pipe doesn't flex from too tall of a Cooper Shim, tightening the screws. When filling the gap, between the GPU, Cooper Shim, and a directly positioned above the GPU. Use Protection for the GPU surface with a square cutout piece of paper when doing a dry run assembly. Which means... Doing a dry run of parts in place without paste or tightened screws helps you find the "sweet spot." Without screws, apply a bit of pressure to the heat-pipe and get a fell of contact under pressure. This gives a great deal of confirmation that thing are in proper place. This is the Mod. A little patients and planning is the way to get best results. Heat Pipe, Thermal Paste, Cooper shim, Thermal Paste, GPU. In that order. In the order of an assembled, step by step... Having all parts cleaned and ready for install... 1. Prep all surfaces and complete dry runs as suggested with confidence in your efforts. 2. Apply Thermal paste to installed CPU and GPU Recommend Arctic 5 compound or better.. Innovative Cooling Diamond 7. 3. Apply Thermal paste to both surfaces of shim, paying attention to the side that 's meant for GPU and the place the shim squarely. 4. Install Heat-Pipe assembly using a gentle torque pattern, and checking a few times befor full tightness for any concerns like flexing or shim movement, etc, over the field of all screws. If it checks out, Your good to go. Run the tests that your use for temps. Be sure the cooling temps don't get worse than before mod. Keeping in mind, the ambient temp your basing your start point from, compared to ambient temp rating from before, as well. In closing... YAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaa Under a load... This will help maintain best frame rate speeds, and not the cause of slowing performance at minimum. All at the same time., Adding extra life to GPU and the CPU, both benefiting from increased heat removal and efficiency. All central processing units perform better when kept cooler, while in use. By how much, I can't say. Hopefully, Your testing tools will confirm some gain and some staying power of consistent operation. If it's a matter of Love, in your case., I thought this all might interest you. Use the best thermal putty you can find. Good Luck.

hello i did take the thermal pad of the cool sink en replace it witn normal cool pasta. will it be a problem?
@bam6972
@bam6972 10 жыл бұрын
YES. IT WILL BE A PROBLEM! don't use it anymore till you get a thermal pad on there. the way its designed is that there is a tiny slant in the heat sink for the gpu. and it will not contact the chip fully. if you take it back off you will see that half the chip is covered with paste and the other side didn't get squished out. if you continue to use it the graphics chip will over heat on one side and then eventually die out. at least when I redid mine awhile back that's what I saw. took pad off added paste then took it off again to see if it would work and it didn't spread evenly on the chip.

I ask a local pc store what too do he say. you dont need that you only need to use more cool paste for the same effect
@bam6972
@bam6972 10 жыл бұрын
robdgekke OMG! hes an idiot. seriously. he might not have seen this same effect before but I have on these laptops. so if you have more paste take yours off and have a look. there will be paste on one side of the chip than the other. just look. if you don't within time maby months the gpu will overheat and be destroyed. like draining coolant from a car then running it out of town. same effect

Oh, yeah, I cleaned out the dust, but I didn't apply new thermal paste. I used my computer anyway and the fan started over working irregularly, like every 10 or 15 seconds it would make a whirring noise and heating up. I stopped using my computer completely when this happened and I haven't used it since. When I apply new thermal paste, do you think the whirring from the fan might stop completely?

you have to clean off the old paste so that when you put new paste on it will cover evenly and be able to transfer heat better.
@bam6972

wow reading old comments. however. It had a thermal pad on the gpu. no thermal paste on gpu on this model. thermal paste will not spread evenly on the gpu on this model. you have to put a 1-2 mm thermal pad in place of it for it to contact perfectly. I tried thermal paste on it awhile back and it did not contact perfect. half the chip did not get thermal paste when tightened down. you have to have a thermal pad in place of it.

@bam6972
@bam6972 9 жыл бұрын
Morgan C not really. just as long as its about the same size. if its too big you can always cut it to fit. 1-2mm thick should do it. not any thicker than that.

bam6972 i thought the thermal paste is used to sink the temperature?
@bam6972
@bam6972 9 жыл бұрын
NobelMicha not sure what you meant. thermal paste is used to transfer the heat from the cpu to the heatsink so that the fan can cool it off. when the thermal paste becomes old it will get really dry and hard to the point that it no longer conducts heat as well. the reason for the fan running really fast and loud is because the cpu temp is high because the thermal paste can no longer transfer the heat in front of the fan that well anymore. replacing the thermal paste should help.
