The 5540 is available with either a 28W processor that uses DDR5 memory (i5-1340P, i5-1350P, i7-1370P) or a 15W processor that uses DDR4 memory (i5-1345U, i7-1355U, i7-1365U.) If anyone has experience with an example of each side-by-side and can compare how hot/noisy the fan is I would appreciate your comment. A few years ago, I bought a batch of Latitude 5501s with either i7-9850H 45 watt or i7-1065G7 15 watt processors. The 45 watt felt and sounded like a hair dryer, the other was fine.

I see this in the field a lot where some combinations are great and some not so much. Then again, it also is heavily affected by what users are doing with it.

The i7 1370P is a steal for the 5540. You get an elite CPU, adjustable RAM, and a wide screen. Only issue is the screen britness. 250 nits is mediocre.

Thanks for the video, I get this model from work next week and this is the only video I could find with this particular combination of specs (same ones I get with the work laptop). Out of curiosity, is the battery life not on the lower end? Even the higher 52Wh battery seems meager for a system with a p series CPU and dedicated graphics.

Battery life is getting better with newer Gen Intels. Since these will probably mostly be connected at the office shirt batt life should be too much of an issue.

same boat, how do you like the laptop ?

@@SlightlySaici I find it to be quite adequate for work. Runs my many tabs, python scripts etc without issue. My main issue really is the build quality, it's quite plastic and although the internals are powerful and ideal, I find myself worrying about the longevity of its frame. Indie games etc run well on it but ofcourse don't expect it to run anything more demanding.

I have this exact model and I have never used that button at the back to turn on this laptop. Seems to me that it's a sim tray, isn't it? Although the specs did not mention any cellular module installed on this model, can you confirm this? (btw tried pressing it, it's just not budging to be pressed nor turns on the laptop.) Thanks!

i think you have the "turn on system when screen was open" switched on. You have to go into the bios setup to switch it off if you prefer to use the button. I did it for my dad's Latitude 3000. Apparently all latitude comes with this option on by default.

I have heard the latitude series over the last few years are they get hot really quick(bought a Latitude 5520 2 years ago). Is this true for the one you have in the video?
@BobPellerin
@BobPellerin 6 ай бұрын
Well... I hate to be vague in my answer but it depends a lot of factors. First, the configuration you selected. The CPU, RAM will make a difference. Then there is the actual use. If you load up a game or do video rendering then it will get hot. So some people will have the issues and some won't.

Dell offers multiple wattage processors in the same model year. I have a 5501 with i7-9850H 45 watt processor that is always super hot, feeling and sounding like a hair dryer most of the time. The 15W i7-1065G7 processor in the same year/model were not a problem for us. The 5540s come with either a 15W series that supports DDR4 memory or 28W processor that supports DDR5. The DDR5 processors ( i5-1340P, i5-1350P, i7-1370P) are rated 25% faster than the DDR4 15W ( i5-1345U, i7-1355U, i7-1365U) I'm shying away from the 28W because I can't risk buying another batch of hair dryers. If someone can comment on the heat behavior of the higher-wattage DDR5 processors listed, it would be much appreciated.

@@daviddickinson58 I just avoided all Dell products because I didn’t want to take a chance. I now go with either HP or Lenovo now. Specifically, the Probooks/Elitebooks and Thinkpads.

Will it support 130W power adapter, can I use the Dell 130W USB-C charger for this model (5540), or it will support only upto 100W charger?

I no longer have one of those around to check, but from memory that particular laptop did not. It is important to note that they sell these in a variety of SKUs, some of which may have that as an option. This is why I try to point out in my videos that you need to check the exact model to get the features. I was told that some counties don't have all SKUs offered, for example. So it's important to know what you are ordering.

Dell no longer installs Windows 10. You must has found an older SKU/model in inventory. Always check the full specs as I mentioned in numerous videos. Like cars, you can get the same model with specs that vary greatly. There seems to be a regional flavor in some regions where lower or higher specs are available.
