Dell Latitude E6420 Upgrading to a New SSD

5 жыл бұрынThis is a video about upgrading another laptop. This time it is DELL Latitude E6420 in which I replace an old mechanical hard drive for a new SSD (solid-state drive). Replacing is so easy that everyone is able to do that without any problems. In the video I show you in detail how I replace the old one for WD Blue 3D NAND SSD 500GB 2.5". So, don’t throw away your laptops.

Since 2008 - I use Acronis for back up and disk clone. cloned the old HDD - and wirte it it the new SSD. Was easy and works well. also usful to clone to a new SSD as a reserve - in case...for instant replacement

I upgraded to a Samsung 256gb SSD in my E6420 and topped out the ram to max. I was lucky though, I got the top spec core i7. Thing still burns through most tasks with ease it’s just gotta be plugged in cause battery is 12 years old and I need to re-apply a better thermal compound on the heat-pipe that this model likes. This was the notebook that inspired what would become the famous Dell XPS 13.. it started here with this chonkey, magnesium bad boy. Literally still works to this day although is use a much newer laptop now.

Lol I didn't know replacing a laptop hard drive was so easy, I thought there were cables and motherboard connectors involved etc. I never opened up or even owned a laptop before, just bought a second hand one to learn Linux. Startup is very slow on the hard drive, so the ssd should help a lot.

Thanks for the video. I had problem with Crucial MX200 1TB SSD, E6420 wouldn't detect. Also, I was looking for the link you have referred i your video for the cases for connecting the disk via USB, couldn't find in the description.

Hi, it hasn't happened to me yet, but I think if you use any good one you shouldn't have any problem with that.

Hi. Congrats for the video and thanks! I was wondering if you could help me to kwnow about some questions about this PC, wich I have also. At first, how could I upgrade it from W7 to w10? Only then It were able to be upgrated in lot of ways, like adding more RAM, since the 6 Gb it actually has, to the top of 16; and the increased of the SSD of the video also. For the lats, I would like to answer to yo, if making this changes the PC would be Ok for be used by developments functions, as running the visual studio, react js, etc.. Very thank you from Bsas.-

Do you know where to buy extra batteries for this laptop? I know you can add up to 2 extra batteries but i don't seem to find them.

Hi, I found some on my favorite e-shop www.alza.co.uk/search.htm?exps=E6420. I don't recommend to buy batteries from China. I've already bought some but they were all total rubbish.

Hello. Thanks for the video. I have a question regarding this PC. I own the core i5 variant and the maxcapacity of the ram is 8gb but it has 2 slots. I want to know if I use 8gb on each slot making 16 or it the total amount has to be 8gb? Thanks.

I read there is a 250 gig limit on ssd drives for this model. How did you get around that?

Hi, I'm not aware of that 250 GB limit, in the video you can see we upgrade it to 500 GB without any issues.

Hey when I put the ssd in and turn on it says no bootable devices found. I believe it has to do with the thickness since the slot and the former Hdd was thicker. I heard that this can be fixed by adding a layer of tape to make them touch. Is this true?

You should have cloned the operating system from the old HDD to the new SSD to use the same license key.

Hi, with a new SSD and at least 8GB RAM, Windows 10 is feasible. On the other hand Windows 7 is not supported anymore at least not for free.

Frankly, you have a very specific problem. If I were I would practice more with a screw driver on the old hard drive and then try to screw the new one.

Ahoj, všimol som si, že pri bootovaní Ti tam píše "Spouštění systému Windows" avšak na Slovenskej verzii Windows 7 som mal stále "Starting Windows". Videl som aj iné jazykové variácie tejto hlášky, ale Slovenskú a Českú teda nikdy. Odkiaľ si mal nainštalovaný Windows? Ďakujem.

Nazdar, ten laptop nie je môj, upgradoval som ho pre známeho. Laptop bol vyradený z firmy, takže má nejakú korporátnu verziu. Myslím, že záleží natom, či máš priamo instalačku konkrétnej jazykovovej verzie alebo máš anglickú a tú prepneš na inú jazykovú verziu. V prvom prípade to vidíš tak ako na videu a v druhom prípade tak ako to máš ty. Predpokladám, že aj tak za chviľu prejdeš na WIN10 alebo na niečo iné takže sa to stane irelevantné. Zdar!

No práve že Windows inštalačku som mal vždy slovenskú ale ten text nebol nikdy po slovensky, a nemali sme to po slovensky ani napr. v škole kde boli tiež originál slovenské Windows 7 Enterprise. Tak slovenská verzia tejto hlášky asi ani neexistovala. A samozrejme Windows 10 mám už vyše roka, len teraz som natrafil na toto video a zaujalo ma to 🙃

Hi, I don't see any reason why to upgrade it again to a mechanical hard drive even at higher speed. Go to a new SSD and your laptop will thank you! :-)

One comment says: "I can now confirm that the Intel i7 2630QM chip does work in the E6420". Hi, you can try to upgrade the GPU, if there is a better option, but pay attention to if the socket supports it.

Hi, 8GB, you can try 16GB but DELL doesn't garantee it would work.

What size are the four screws that were removed to take out the hard drive? I have a 6420 that I want to keep the hard drive in, but there's only one of those screws left. So I have to get the right size to replace them.

anyone here had a experience of everytime turning on the dell laptop (button) after 2 sec. it suddenly shut down with a clicking sound and turned on again twice and then it will becom ok....... NOTE: i have no battery im using charger as my source
