For many display related problems on laptops a re-flow could be used to fix the issue it is having.

Reflow soldering is a process in which a solder paste (a sticky mixture of powdered solder and flux) is used to temporarily attach one or several electrical components to their contact pads, after which the entire assembly is subjected to controlled heat, which melts the solder, permanently connecting the joint. Heating may be accomplished by passing the assembly through a reflow oven or under an infrared lamp or by soldering individual joints with a hot air pencil.
Reflow soldering is the most common method of attaching surface mount components to a circuit board. The goal of the reflow process is to melt the solder and heat the adjoining surfaces, without overheating and damaging the electrical components. In the conventional reflow soldering process, there are usually four stages, called "zones", each having a distinct thermal profile: preheat, thermal soak (often shortened to just soak), reflow, and cooling.

very clever!! as any real Tech knows these motherboards are manufactured using wave solder technology where all the chips are glued to the board and sent through a liquid solder bath for a few seconds. If there is any minor imperfection in the lands on the board could be dust or just bad solder flow. I applaud the guy that posted this for his resourcefulness.

Hi, Thanks for the video. I just wanted to offer a couple of tips. 1) Remove the glue on the corners of the GPU before re-flow 2) Run a no clean flux under the chip ( like Kester 951 ) 3) A good pre-heat is a crucial part to a proper re-flow. 4) Temp control is very important. If this is something you do often I would recommend a Hot air station. Please feel free to take a look at my m5010 GPU reflow video.

I decided not to apply the heat gun treatment but followed all the other advice and re-assembled. My Dell M5010 exhibited the same garbled screen for about 30 seconds but after it decided to reboot, the screen has come back as normal! It has been running and downloading and applying months worth of windows updates and so far has been absolutely fine. I also took the opportunity to check the fan wasn't clogged (it wasn't) and one other thing - the three screws in the triangular arrangement, they were not tight. I think this was a factor with my laptop too? (I screwed them down). Many thanks for the clear tutorial.

Also, one cooling trick I have used in the past - remove the DVD/CD unit if you don't use it routinely. The locating screw in this case can be found under the memory cover. Remove the screw and then ease out the drive from the side. You then have a large void which will let the air in easier and help dissipate the heat. You can put the drive back in on the occasions where you might need it.

Hi Johnny, Thank you for the tech tip. I used a heat gun with an output of aprox 500 deg. I almost expected the motherboard to curl up like a potato chip but luckily, it didn't. I reflowed all 3 chips, heating them for about 10-15 seconds. I did not hold the gun over the chips steadily, but waved it on and off, while measuring the temp w/an infrared laser thermometer. 215 degrees seems to have done the trick. I left the board mounted and made a tin foil shield w/a square cut out.

It worked just as you said. I wish you would have mentioned what heat setting you were using on your heat gun and also wondering why you didn't remove and replace the old thermal paste on the graphics chip? Thanks so much though. The actual part of doing the reflow was very well explained. I followed your example to a tee and it worked! You saved a good computer from being thrown away!

Dang. You totally scored on that! Wish I could have found a laptop in the trash! It was probably a laptop for a company or business and they just take the HD for security purposes. If the video issues happen again you can hit it with the heat gun for a longer period of time. Try to make a heat shield to protect all the other parts and only expose the graphics chip. You can use foam board and aluminium foil. Thanks for watching!

Thought i would post to say thanks. My wife's laptop had the dreaded 7 beeps, was all set to buy a new one but thought it couldn't hurt to give it a go. Wasn't too hopeful but followed your vid and there we go. One working laptop. It even works better than before as there were some graphical issues. Computer experts said they couldn't fix this as it "needed a new motherboard". Next time ill direct them to this! Cheers!

From what others have told me, this solution worked for them. They also mentioned that they got a black screen with 7 beeps too. You don't really have much to loose in my opinion. Give it a shot and heat up the chip for about 1 minute if you use a hair dryer. Try to protect the other parts by making a shield to block the rest of the board and only blast the ship. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

AWESOME. You did a great job on this video. Right to the point, sped up the screw removals, showed me just what I needed to know. I had 7 beeps, no boot, like many others. This worked great. I bought a solder iron rework station to do this. I don't know what the optimum temp is, but I used about 320 degrees F for 30 seconds. I hit the underside for 15 seconds and the CPU and chipset processor too just for good measure. Dell should pay you and link to this video.

I can't really say because it would depend on how often you move your laptop around. The more flexing it does, the sooner it will need to be done again.If it happens again, hit it with a little more heat for a longer amount of time. Good luck.
@TerraformingMaster
@TerraformingMaster 9 жыл бұрын
Wrong procedure: this is not a reflow. It will work for awhile, but not permanently. To do it right, you have to bake the board at 165 degrees F in an oven for 24 hours to remove moisture that would otherwise make molten solder explode, then shoot liquid soldering flux under the chip with a needle dispenser (from digikey), then heat with the gun until about 20 seconds after the solder on components surrounding the chip has obviously melted. If the procedure in this video had actually gotten the solder got enough to melt, the solder would have exploded from the trapped moisture.

Try connecting an external monitor to the laptop first then turn it on. If the image displays on the external monitor fine with no problems then the lights in the LCD panels are not working and you would have to replace the whole LCD panel. If the image does not display on the external monitor correctly then you might try to re-flow the chip like in this video. Good luck.

Hi I thought your vid was really good. Very clear and well presented. There is another vid on KZfaq and the guy uses foil folded four or five times with a hole in it the same size of the GPU to protect the surrounds. He then heats the PGU with a pencil torch to I think 450f? He claims he did this for his mother and again I think, on another dell and it was still going four years later. Anyway thanks again I will be giving this a go.

@johnnythegeek
@johnnythegeek 11 жыл бұрын
It is not permanent. Eventually, the more you use your laptop by carrying it around, the more flexing the parts inside will experience. Also, just sitting on your desktop the chips will heat up and expand then cool and contract. The constant usage will loosen the chip and it will detach again. How well you reflow it will determine the longevity of the reflow.. The spudger came from iFixit website. They sell a really great kit! Good luck.

Known technique, but it involves lot of risks - especially your tutorial. First of all, don't ever recommend people to use an ordinary heatgun on an unprepared board and without using a temperature sensor. Some of the folks may think, that they can repeat this very same procedure for longer than 10-15 seconds. In that case it'll most probably result in a: 1) deformed or melted plastic components (for example those ram slots, or even a CPU socket); 2) moved or blown away SMD components. (if a hot air melts the solder under nearby SMDs, you just have to be lucky, if you don't mess something up) 3) overcooked GPU chip and finally.... will certainly result in need for a new motherboard, because it'll be made irrepairable. In my early days I had a lot of practice with old & recycled boards - I've seen and experienced it all. Some guys even recommend a blowtorch for heating up those chips - I guess, that's the next level of this Russian Roulette.

@Johnny Phung First of all thanks for the clear demo. My Dell Inspiron is also facing the same problem. I've sent that to Dell service center for diagnose and they couldn't find any problem. I've also run the diagnostic tests but they were all clear. The service center guy has told me that it seems to be an issue with my graphics card and i may need to replace my motherboard and it's having only 3 months warranty. Somehow, they have temporarily fixed the issue but now it has started reoccurring and i don't want to change the motherboard as i don't see any other problem with it.
