Dell Optiplex 780 SFF + Full Size (one fan) GPU?

Technically I won't be using a full size GPU (two fans) because it won't physically fit in the case, but it's not a Low Profile GPU designed for SFF cases. So for the viewers that feel the title is click bait, I'm sorry. It's still a major modification to install a one fan "full size" GPU into a SFF Dell. Thanks for watching!

Your kids are soo lucky! My mom banned me from buying used things off Craigslist/Ebay/Aliexpress.. You get the point. So i was so lucky that the local dumpster here had a Optiplex 780 there! Grabbed it, slammed a small 750 ti in it, it was a pentium one, had to upgrade to cpu, gpu etc. My mom said its gonna fail in a few months, its been a year now and still works great! Thanks MH! The slits and bends actually worked out better than I expected too! I just really didn't want to use screws to hold it in place and that solution seemed easy and practical. I'm super happy that it's 100% tool less and still very secure. My kids probably play too many games, like all kids today. What I need to do is force them to use the keyboard and mouse more, they're hooked on the Xbox360 controller. That's funny you bring up pink and blue. In Part 2 of the video you'll hear about the paint scheme and the plans I have for it. You're not too far off!

Right on man, I'm glad you like it. Honestly it's probably the most satisfying PC mod I've ever done. It feels really good when you start hacking up a PC case and everything works out. That would be sweet to squeeze a 1080 mini into your 9020. That's a serious upgrade from the 1050ti. Thanks for watching mang!

@theodiscusgaming3909 5 жыл бұрын
You'd be limited by the PSU though. Consider getting a 1660 or a 1660 ti as they are the best low power GPUs around and they're a significant upgrade from the 1050 ti.
@PimptatoPCs
@PimptatoPCs 5 жыл бұрын
I've taken the measurements on the 780 SFF and I'm pretty sure that an aftermarket ITX PSU would fit it in. You just have to get a little creative with the mounting. But a 1660(ti) without a 6-pin would be the easiest upgrade for sure.
@theodiscusgaming3909
@theodiscusgaming3909 5 жыл бұрын
@@PimptatoPCs I'm sure all 1660 and 1660 ti have 6 pin connectors, but given the wattage of the stock PSU it should be possible to use a SATA power to 6 pin converter or something.
@PimptatoPCs
@PimptatoPCs 5 жыл бұрын
I was thinking about the 1650, which would still be a pretty good upgrade over a 1050ti. I think the 9020 PSU is under 300W so using a molex 6-pin adapter might be pushing it. He could get a good 600W ITX PSU though and get that 1080 of his dreams =D

You know Voodoo, I am an old school parent and usually operate with a strict "share" policy in place. But my son's PC was built a couple years ago specifically for him, it's his. At that time my daughter was too young to even care about computers. I really felt that it was a fair decision to make one just for her. Maybe I over emphasized the reason for making the PC was because they "were arguing", it was more because it was a good time for her to have her own. She watches different stuff than my son, plays different games, and practices different school activities. Plus it was a super fun project, win-win-win =)

Hello everybody. I have some questions. I have an older Optiplex 780. One of the small form factors. It has a 2 core quad 266 in it. I believe it's a 9600. I'm seeing all these people on the internet doing upgrades to them and I understand I will have to get a pcie extension cable to get a graphics card to fit in it that isn't single slot. But I was just going to buy a 1050ti and mount it on the side of the box. I don't want to spend $160 and not have it be compatible with the board. Anybody have any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

@PimptatoPCs
@PimptatoPCs 5 жыл бұрын
If it is going to be the base for a future budget gaming PC I would go with the mini tower model. The sff is just too limited with what PSU's and GPU's that you can use. The 780 uses DDR3 versus the DDR2 in the 760 so that is a plus for gaming and really all applications. If you're picking up the 760 mini tower over the 780 sff because it's super cheap, you could always switch out the motherboard later down the road with a 780 motherboard. They have the same exact I/O layout on the rear panel and are easily swapped. But if it were me I would just pick up a 780 mini tower from the get go. That way you will have DDR3 and more GPU and CPU options down the road. Hope this helps!

@PimptatoPCs
@PimptatoPCs 4 жыл бұрын
Hello! Good day (night?) to you too! The PC is still running great and has never shown any issues of not having enough power. The GTX 750 is rated at only 55w, and the Q9400 is 95w. The only other things pulling any power are a couple little fans and a hard drive. I generally think that the "recommended" PSU wattage is overstated by at least 100w most of the time. But you never really know exactly how much power your PC is using without plugging it into a watt meter and stress testing it. I do think that the Dell PSUs are safe and more than enough to run budget gaming machines.

Honestly, I would just run the card outside. Get a long riser and a 6-pin extension, maybe remove the I/O shield and run the cables out of there, and you can just rest the card on top of the case or stick it to it with double sided tape.

Not without some modding. The Dell cooler has a different mounting pattern than a standard off the shelf ATX cooler. I have a couple videos that show how I mounted a water cooler, it's a very similar process.

Thanks but I have another question could remove the motherboard and put it in another case?
@PimptatoPCs
@PimptatoPCs 6 жыл бұрын
Nope, that won't work either. Older Dell PC's (up to the 980) were a design called BTX. They are build like a mirror image of ATX, everything is pretty much backwards and opposite of an ATX PC. I'm not aware of any non Dell (or HP etc.) case that is a BTX design. BTX was used by OEM companies and never was popular enough for case manufacturers to make cases for those motherboards.

I know this is an old video but can I take the same pc and transfer the motherboard into an ATX case? Kinda thought that was the title of the video lol
@PimptatoPCs
@PimptatoPCs 5 жыл бұрын
It's actually a real pain to transfer this motherboard into an ATX case. The main issue is it's a BTX motherboard, which is essentially a mirror image of ATX, everything is reversed. Plus you have to contend with all the Dell proprietary stuff. The plugs for the power supply and front I/O like the power button and USB's are all non-standard Dell designs. Even the mounting holes for the motherboard aren't in the normal spots. It's almost impossible because of the amount of modifications that need to be done.

Does that zotac gtx 750 ti requires external power Means what is PSU requirements for this gpu
@PimptatoPCs
@PimptatoPCs 5 жыл бұрын
No it doesn't need external power. As long as the PCIe slot supplies the standard 75W then it's good to go with any PSU. Some older Dell's like the Optiplex 755 used a lower power motherboard that would only supply 35W to the PCIe. But they had a "35W maximum" message printed next to the PCIe slot.

That is what I try to do on this channel, cool mods. This is a mod that is actually talked about a lot by people that own Optiplex PC's, but I have never seen anyone actually install the GPU where the hard drive tray is. This project was out of necessity, but I also wanted to see if I could pull off this particular mod. I also had the PC and the GPU already and didn't want to spend a lot of money. The older Dell Optiplex PC's like the 780 are a BTX design and won't fit in an ATX case. Even new Dell motherboards are quite a bit of work to transfer to a new case because the power button and front panel USB ports won't just plug into a Dell motherboard. You have to pull the Dell power button and USB stuff from the Dell case and mod them into the new case. The PCIe ribbon cable was less than $25, you can find cases for that much but they are usually junk.

I've never used an Optiplex that is newer than second gen Intel and he's using a 3rd gen Intel Dell. The plugs on all the older Optiplex PC's, including the 780 that is in my video, need the Dell plugs transferred to the new case because they are all bundled into one socket. And he still had to break the power port and find out which spot to plug the power into. Plus all the other plugs are proprietary, he couldn't even plug in the rear exhaust fan.

So did u have any issue running the 750ti, bcz if u can run it then what the hell am i waiting for? Try this link: forums.tomshardware.com/threads/watt-limit-on-my-pcie.2799282/

@PimptatoPCs
@PimptatoPCs 2 жыл бұрын
This one had a 230 watt PSU, but that doesn't really matter in this scenario because the GPU didn't need power from the PSU. Any GPU that doesn't need to be plugged into the PSU draws all it's power from the PCIe slot. Almost all modern PCIe slots, even from older Dell's, supply 75 watts of power. If I remember correctly, this GTX 750 that I installed was a 55 watt card.

Right on, that's a great chip. If you're going to spend a couple months getting your parts together, you should buy the CPU last so you can check out the performance of the new chips. The Ryzen+ chips will be backward compatible with any AMD AM4 motherboard that you buy right now. Just a thought, it doesn't a matter too much since you can always upgrade the R3 1200 in the future if you wanted to. How exciting man! You get to build yourself a new PC!! I'm jealous =)

Glad you like the mod! Hot glue for what part? When I used double sided tape or the epoxy? I love hot glue and have used it for a lot of mods, but not for this one. The double sided tape allowed me to temporarily position the GPU so it was level, and the epoxy was perfect for gluing that plastic clip to the fan shroud. Hot glue is definitely not strong enough for that in my opinion.
@jubthreesixnine688
@jubthreesixnine688 6 жыл бұрын
In place of the epoxy, would have less chance of damaging the graphics card depending on what the plastic is made of & far easier to get off later, in saying that, this build would probs die before ypu part it out or do upgrades, right?
@PimptatoPCs
@PimptatoPCs 6 жыл бұрын
The GPU is pretty heavy. Squeezing the clip puts a lot of stress on the plastic and it flexes a lot while lifting the card out of the PC. It would probably break a hot glue joint the first time I removed it, unless I used two hands to support the card. This card sells for $50 and I basically got it for free. It will spend the rest of it's life running games for a little girl. I'm really not worried about parting it out, upgrading it, or even ruining it lol.

I currently own this same PC and was searching for a method to fit non standard GPU into this case. In my opinion, you went far too extreme on this build. I think I will get a get a $15 PCIe flex cable and mount the GPU externally. The video never showed us what you did with the original HDD or if you replaced it with a smaller SSD. Even so, I don't see any room to add either other than to go externally. With all the chopping and grinding you did on the CPU case I think you should have cut a 4½ inch slot on the side to feed the PCIe cable outside the case and mounted it in a custom built box of its own. I am sure it was a nice hobby project for you, but seriously, just cram all the parts into a tower case and viola done!

If ur out in the field and you tell someone to cut the short wire so they cut the blue instead of the red, was termonolgy important in that case? would it not have saved lives or just time if it was a training simulator? If you want to have a person who is unpresice and indifferent to the perfection of thier work while bullets are flying all around you, be my guest. More boots for the the grinder. But dont waste, not just my time, but the other potential thousands of peoples time who come to this video thinking that they are going to see the installation of a FULL sized GPU and not a MINI. There is a difference between getting something done and getting something done right. And in war, well you know what that can mean. If this guy has any kind of spine, he will change the title of this video and its description to reflect his work appropriately. And what you are refering to is a low-profile bracket. Which is something completely different to the length of the card which is referred to as either full-size or mini. And before any one comments about the irony of me saying such a thing and then spelling many things incorrectly, my point is not in whether or not something is correct but it is about being on the ball when others are relying on you. And there is nobody relying on me spelling things correctly. Hooah!
