I recently acquired a Dell Precision 5540 (Intel Core i7-9850H, 32 GB, NVIDIA Quadro T2000, final UEFI version) that runs w-a-y too hot (at 100 C+) with high fan RPMs due to the processor's Turbo Boost feature over-responding to every relatively slight demand for more processing power. The solution was to disable Turbo Boost / a de facto Intel sanctioned and temporary, automated overclocking tool that causes short term overheating, random system destabilization and ultimately a service life reduction when mounted into thin laptops whose cooling solution can't keep up to modern hot-running Intel processors. After disabling Turbo Boost, my '5540 now runs as cool & quiet and responsive as it should've in the first place.

I am thinking of adquiring one in USA next week. How did you disable the Turbo Boost? Is it upgradable? (the network card, seller told me it comes with wifi5 and I want to upgrade it to wifi6). Any other general info you can provide is highly appreciated! Cheers!

@@jaimetallica2007 Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 can be disabled in the Dell Precision 5540's UEFI / BIOS. Its WiFi card can be upgraded to an Intel AX200 WiFi 6 or an Intel AX210 Wifi 6e M.2 2230 card. Find the Precision 5540's service guide by searching: Dell Precision 5540 drivers. Crucial sells RAM and NvMe and SATA SSDs for it. Buy the ones that have the best TBW rating for a longer service life. Get one from Dell REFURBISHED.

@@sap9378 Due to a fine silica grit from a construction site outside my window, my Precision 5540's keyboard switches have begun making a random poor contact. I have some compressed air and keyboard protector on order. Otherwise, my Dell runs well. In hindsight, and given said grit, I would've went for a Dell Latitude Rugged Extreme which is designed to thwart dust and water incursion.

@@johnbovay8353I'm going to buy the Core i9 version (9980HK up to 5 ghz) with a 4K and touch screen. Is it really worth buying for roughly 800$? I heard some thermal issues from it but I want to use a cooling pad in order to maintain the performance. Right now I'm skeptical between this and a fresh new ASUS Vivobook with Ryzen 7 7770U. I also heard that if Windows 12 comes out, it will not support these kinds of old aged processors anymore

@BsianTech
@BsianTech 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Shashank Pandey, welcome to my videos. It would depend on the type of data analysis you be doing. If you doing very large data sets then the Latitude has maximum capacity of 32BG and the 5540 has 64GB. If the data analysis software is heavily relying on the GPU then you be looking for something more than the GeForce MX150 in the latitude series. So it all depends on the the person’s type and size of data analysis they perform. The Precision series is to go the next step the latitude series isn’t capable of. Would this make sense I hope if you look at the Precision 7000 series you see they have serious configurations of hardware. Also thanks for the feedback as well :).

AWESOME review, thanks so much for the in depth look - definitely going to be getting some version of this machine. Do you think a configuration with i7-975H / Quadro T1000 / 32G RAM would work okay for Avid Media Composer (mostly 1080p, some 4k)? In addition to being cheap/broke, my concern was thermal throttling would limits the gains of an i9 and not be worth the extra money.

This new Precision 5540 is another amazing performer really surprised me. This here is the new mobile workstation king is my thoughts for power and portability. @@BsianTech I see the 5540 has a developer edition as well which comes pre-loaded with Ubuntu and has RedHat Linux certification. Managed to get my 5530 with Ubuntu which made it an easy choice for me (in fact, it was the only high-end machine i could find that was Linux certified). Tim Cook is killing Apple, they might be making lots of money now extorting and screwing people, but long-term, those people will be jumping ship when they've had enough. Both Windows and Linux desktop are incredible these days, MacBook Pros are no longer good value for money or the best hardware you could buy for your money.

Great review, I bought it when it came out 2019 and the battery is crap on this machine even at the 9 cell. I actualy had to replaced the whole computer within a year. Dell would not send me a new one, so they ended up giving me a refurbished model. The battery is also a 9 cell and its not last me more than an hour of use. I do graphic work and some video editing. If I leave the house without the AC adapter, I'm pretty much screwed for the day. It runs really hot after a while and the dual fans are consistantly on. It's a nice machine with good specs, but for some reason it just doesnt hold up well in the long run. Now that time as passed, I'll probably look at an M1 max Apple pro system. Considering the price I paid at the time.. around 3'gs ... The M1 max is a little less with crazy performance and quality parts.
@BsianTech
@BsianTech 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks @Ruben H, unfortuntely battery life has not improved on the Precision range at all even the newest ones if you working on it hard you be getting an hour on them too. The new M1 are absolute beast on battery life, Apple made a big game changer doing it. I would only ape into the Apple M1 if your applications you use are native to M1 as word of warning, else good computers especially the new M1 max and pro.

I've been trying to figure out where to get the smaller battery and the laptop-sized SATA cable for the second HHD expansion. I'm seriously considering this for my new laptop, but I have to make sure that I can install a second hard drive before making that choice, and not being able to do it out of the box is a bit of a minus. Dell's own site doesn't seem to offer them, at least in any obvious place.

Hi Pete H, I'm not an expert at autocad or solidworks but what I hear is the T1000 is fine and it's when you start to do renders and visualize a lot is when you might see the T2000 performance will kick in and if it does its about 5-10%. As for the upgrade of the CPU and Graphics, unfortunately the processor and graphics isn't up-gradable, these are usually soldered to the main board. @BsianTech
@BsianTech 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Gaurav Puri, welcome to my videos.This is pretty easy one to answer. This will all come down to price of what you can afford because the price difference between Latitude and Precision is quite a bit. So first off application being ML what you are after is looking for the fastest GPU to help smash out those calculations as it will be better than the CPU for that, of course still get decent CPU to keep up with the GPU but the fastest GPU you can get hold of is your number one friend. In this department alone any Precision will trample (win) over the fastest Latitude you can spec up which would be the Latitude 5501 (keeping both 15" range) having a GPU of MX150. Just make sure you get a minimum of 16GB RAM, better with 32GB for ML depending on how large the datasets are. I hope this helps with your decision.

@BsianTech
@BsianTech 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Nyi Nyi Nyan Lin, welcome to my videos. If you have the budget for it go with the Precision 5540 over the XPS 15. The Precision has optimizations for the Autocad and Revit which does enhance the speed and experience compare to the XPS. Secondly the graphics is different, XPS has Geforce and Precision is Quadro. Geforce may sometimes be faster but the Quadro range is for professional software like the two you use, so it is built with error correction meaning more software stability and also can run for hours on end. As for i9 having heating issues well it does a decent job at cooling but the Dell Precision 7540 has way better cooling solution which allows the processor to run even quicker, the downside is it's not as thin and light compare to the 5540. Another factor of the Precision vs XPS is that XPS is built for consumer where as Precision is built for business to handle more physical abuse and designed to run at longer operating hours. Of course for stability and toughness you pay for the premium for Precision over the XPS. I hope this helps your purchase.

Dell cannot tell me if this is possible, and i have found no one that has done this before. At a glance the two motherboards look 99% -100% identical, at least from online pictures. I thought this was the wrong keyboard and Dell informed me that the keyboards are windowed to show the light through the letters. Your preview of this model shows what I observed at OfficeMax. Can you tell me if the backlit keyboard has clear windows in the letters to allow light to come through? If not can I order one for this model? Dell just wants me to buy the laptop and seems to tell me anything to that end. Your video is very professional. I like it.

As for option on the keyboard you can get a keyboard without backlit or one with backlit. I think it comes with backlit as default.

@BsianTech
@BsianTech 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Wai Kit Loo, the office productivity, photoshop and day trading isn't going to push for graphics power. As for the autocad viewing if you just viewing I think you be okay without dedicated graphics. If you were designing that's a different matter. Taking all that into account personally I would go with the Latitude 7400, here is the reason the CPU will be quicker which be easier for all your work, even though its lower on RAM, 16GB should be fine for you unless the spreadsheet you working on are insanely large and you will know already if you struggling on 16GB if your machine already has it. The biggest factor I go with the 7400 is the warranty. It will guarantee you will have a laptop for another 4 years where as the 5510 well it could work for a few days or a year or two and then if any part die you are starting to be out of pocket. That $100 difference between the two is the insurance policy you will have a working computer for 4 years (minus any downtime for repairs). I would trade a little speed if there was any from the 5510 to have a working computer, this is the business decision to make sure that $1k is working $1k unit. I hope that helps you.

BsianDad BsianDad man, thank you so much for spending time advising me on this matter. I will go for a Latitude 7400 then. You’re right, the warranty is really a big plus for peace of mind for the following 4 years. Appreciate man 😊👍🏻

What's the cost of it in USA...i7 8gen with 512gb...The coste of it in dell website is quite high is there any Black Friday or thanks giving with this series of dell laptops...
@BsianTech
@BsianTech 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ranveer Singh, yes the cost of this laptop isn't on the cheaper end of the spectrum as it was aimed at the high end of the market. As I am in Australia I don't keep an eye out on the Dell US website for pricing so I can't really give you accurate information if there are Black Friday or other specials on the Dell US site. I am hoping one of my US viewers are able to answer your question.

Wow that I didn't know, then again the price of the laptops are cheaper in US then Australia as well. Just make sure you get a good amount of years of warranty for the computer in your budget. My suggestion is to get about 3-4 years, its worth the money, as it guarantees you have a working computer for those amount of years, and of course consider checking out ProSupport Plus as it has accidental damage cover which covers water damage and well physical damage if you have the budget for it.

@BsianDad With the release of new Xps 15 2020, is there a high chance that new 5000 series is around the corner? Just wanted to know is it worth it buying at this point or should I wait for the new models? And yeah thanks for the review, was very helpful.
@BsianTech

Hi Traverse Rover, I am sure there is high chance the new Precision 5000 will be release soon, personally I think it be another two to three months before we see the new model if you can wait that long then you could see the current 5540 would go on sale or come down in price =). I would expect the new model would follow similar to the XPS 15 2020. I do hope they give a AMD version.

Hi TheJcGlobal c, I am actually waiting for the P1 Gen2 to arrive for review as well. I was hoping to get these two in the same time to do a side by side comparsion but unfortunately the Lenovo P1 hasn't shown up yet. These two computer are so similarly spec that on paper the only major different I see is the battery. The Precision 5540 can go up to 6 cell (97Whr) and the P1 gen2 is 4 cell (80Whr) so down to the battery life. Also I see hope in better speakers in the P1 gen 2 but can't tell till I get it in my hands to test.

Basically that's a XPS or G5 with a Nvidia GTX 1650. If you got the money, get the RTX model for the XPS or G5. Same layout.
@BsianTech
@BsianTech 4 жыл бұрын
Hi E M, the Precision is based off the XPS design you have that correct but Dell has given it a few more options geared towards Professional work. So three major differences is first being processor can go to Xeon on the Precision where as the XPS is only up to i9 if that is even available in that country too. Second the discrete graphics as you pointed out XPS has Geforce range but the Precision is Quadro range for Nvidia (not sure if the RTX graphics is availble for XPS range yet). Last the Precision has professional software optimization available to it even though the XPS has same hardware it isn't made available to XPS. There is of course a big price difference between the two, mainly due to the discrete graphics in the Precision. I hope that might give a little insight on the product =).

Came here looking for any tips on how to calibrate my display on the second hand Dell that I've just purchased for more natural colours. Links to the colour profile take me to a spammy site with ads for prostitutes. Not what I was looking for. Would appreciate a video on how to properly calibrate the screens

Great review. I don't think you missed anything! Well... maybe you could have dropped some liquid on it and told us how long before it stops working 😂
@BsianTech
@BsianTech 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Gerry De Rosa, well I can take a guess for liquid, if it's a cup of coffee or water I would say about 3-15mins (depends if screw driver is close by), because I would quickly save your work then shutdown the computer and then ASAP open up the back cover and unplug the battery out. I wouldn't be booting a computer up for a least 2 weeks if I know liquid spill lol.
