I’m pretty sure the reason why the Surface has a keyboard that can be angled is so it grips better when using it on your lap. For ergonomics you never want the keyboard tilted that way. In fact many ergonomic keyboards tilt the opposite way.

What I've found from comparing my Surface Laptop 4 (8GB RAM) vs ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 (16GB RAM), both AMD, are that Surface Laptop 4 has much faster RAM. As a result, my SL4 is much snappier while having longer battery life. The user experience matters, not the spec sheet. Anyway, the Dell XPS looks like a good alternative. But I think the DDR4 vs DDR5 will matter for some people. Also, for Surface Pro 9, if you use Surface Connect to charge, you have 2 free USB-C ports.

Ok, Andrew is obviously a bit biased towards Dell, let me tell you why, the surface pro 9 does not just have a dynamic refresh rate as he said....you can also choose 120hz, or choose 60hz or choose the dynamic refresh rate...so really that was biased way too much... Another point that was biased, was the fact that he keeps comparing this to the surface pro 9, but when started talking about speakers, he cut it extremely short...i will tell you why, because the surface pro 9 has front facing speakers and this is a huge point for media consumption and a huge step in audio quality... .... In the end, the dell tablet is good, the surface pro is good, get what you can afford without pressuring yourself because remember, neither will make you productive if you ain't got it in you. Cheers.

Your reviews are excellent, but here I have an issue: The pen technology is Wacom AES 2.0, which is not as good as Slim Pen 2 and MS Pen Protocol 2.5, or Samsung S Pen with Wacom EMR for that matter. This Dell device is therefore not really suited for artwork. For many this may be irrelevant, to me it´s one the most important distinguishing features. Another issue is the fact that the MS Surface Pro 8/9 comes with 32gb RAM (for a hefty price tag, to be sure), while this Dell tops out at 16Gb. Since both have "only" integrated Intel Iris X graphics which uses RAM instead of dedicated graphics memory, this could be an issue depending on the size of an image file.

@@omarridwan879 I´m assuming you need a full blown PC/Laptop, and not a tablet with a mobile OS, which rules out either iPad (Pro), or the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8/9. You cannot go wrong with either Microsoft Surface Pro 8/9, or Surface Laptop Studio, or one of the devices from the 360° series from the Samsung Galaxy Book 3 line. It will depend also on your budget, though. Microsoft Surface Pro 8/9 has the advantage of being a full blown PC with the form factor of a tablet. It weighs around 900 grams, and has a 13 inch screen. My experience is that sketching and painting for a longer period of time within such limits can be tiresome after a while. Built quality is excellent - it feels as if you can play soccer with it and it wouldn´t break, but I would still recommend some sleeve or protective cover in combination with a keyboard. Spec wise, it starts with an i5 (11th gen in the SP8, 12th gen in the SP9) Intel core CPU and at 8Gb Ram and 256Gb SSD, and goes all the way up to 32GB RAM and a 1Tb SSD. 32GB Ram will come with a price, though! SP8/9 do not have a dedicated GPU, they come with Intel Iris X integrated graphics - which is perfectly fine, unless you want to do gaming or some other heavy graphics lifting. Be aware that the integrated GPU will take away up to 2GB from your RAM, so I would recommend going with at least 16GB Ram, independently of your intended purpose. If you shop around, you will still find plenty of Surface Pro 8 devices with a good discount on the original price tag. Where I live, the maxed out SP8 (32GB Ram, 1 TB) started originally at 2.800€, now you can usually find one between 2000 and 2200€. Something to be aware of regarding the Surface Pro9: Originally, in the SP8 you had the choice of 60Hz or 120Hz display refresh rate. Switching to 120Hz will take away about 1hr of Battery life, but has the advantage of better response to pen tip input, which you will notice when writing or sketching. In their attempt to prolong battery life, Microsoft has throttled refresh rate in the SP9 by introducing an automatically adapting refresh rate. I did see people complain that the refresh rate of the display would sometimes become so low that pen input became choppy. This is something you would need to test out on your own. Regarding battery life in general: Forget the claimed 15 or 16hrs battery life, that´s nonsense. Realistically, you can expect 4-6hrs. One thing to keep in mind: Though the SP8/9 are a full blown PC/laptop in the shape of a tablet, put any notion of having both worlds equally available to rest! I had this hope, but in real life this didn´t materialize. The SP8/9 are no tablets, because a) too heavy (900g vs. 650g does not sound like much, but the extra weight will make itself noticeable!), b) too short of a battery life (tablet battery life is about double that of SP8/9), and c) apps for Windows 11 are usually not optimized for touch and pen input. To use the example of Photoshop: Compared to older versions of Photoshop, recent versions are much more designed for pen and touch input, but to work really fluidly in Photoshop you´d still need an external keyboard. Apps for the iPad for example are designed such, that keyboard input is rarely needed.

@@omarridwan879 Moving on to the Surface Laptop Studio: Basically, it has very similar internals as the SP8, but the hardware envelope is wider because you can get versions with integrated GPU or with dedicated GPU, and more harddrive space (if you´re willing to pay for it). The Intel Core i5 versions come with integrated GPU, the i7 with either the Nvidia RTX3050ti, or the RTX2000. If you decide for a version with dedicated GPU, go with the 3050ti, it´s the better allround GPU. This GPU is medium range at best though - on Puget, integrated Intel Iris X will score around 1400-1500, the 3050ti will score around 4500. It´s much more powerful than integrated GPU, but not a racehorse either (current midrange Nvidia 40XX GPUS will score in the realm of 10.000-15.000). One of the advantages of a dedicated GPU: It has 4Gb RAM of it´s own and will not limit the RAM generally available to the device. Surface Laptop Studio still offers only 11th gen Intel core CPUs, and those are getting a bit long in the tooth. 12th and 13th gen CPUs will show considerable improvement in multi core performance, but this will show only in video editing or 3d rendering. Even for working with Photoshop, 11th gen will be plenty of power. Configurations will go up to 32Gb Ram and 2Tb SSD. If you go for a maxed out version, consider the 1Tb SSD - you will pay several hundred euros/dollar more for 2Tb harddrive space, I´d consider spending the additional amount on external HD, which will be much cheaper. The display is 14,4 inches, and slightly less resolving compared with the SP8/9 (SP8/9 have close to 6 megapixels resolution, Surface Laptop Studio around 3,8 megapixels at 2400x1600). The weigth is double that of the SP8/9 (1800 grams). That means it´s not a lightweight. Battery life is claimed 18-19hrs, realistically 4-6hrs. The biggest advantage of the Surface Laptop Studio: You can go seamlessly from laptop mode to tablet mode without having to flip the display 360° around the chassis. Depending on your usecase, this can be quite an advantage as opposed to having to pick the entire device up with one hand, and rotating the display with the other hand. In tablet mode, the display will cover the keyboard though - if you want to work for a longer period of time in tablet mode, you will need an external keyboard as well. This goes also for SP8/9, btw: You can buy a cover with integrated keyboard for the SP8/9, but you will not be able to write, sketch or draw on both devices in laptop mode (such that the keyboard is in front of you). The display will not be sturdy enough and will wiggle under pen pressure, and you cannot rest your wrist on firm ground. Only when the display is resting on the desk in tablet mode will you have a solid surface to write/sketch on. If you´re unsure what tablet mode and laptop mode means, watch some of the review videos. It´ll be explained much better there than I could here with words only More to come!

@@omarridwan879 Let´s go to the Samsung Galaxy Book 3 360° versions, Pro or non-Pro. I looked only into the Pro-version, so I cannot say much about it´s non-Pro variants. They all have one thing in common: Their display can be rotated 360° around the chassis. If you go from laptop mode to tablet mode, you rotate the display such that it will cover the keyboard - which means you´ll need an additional external keyboard (same as in the Microsoft Surface line). Let´s talk about the pen tech for a moment: Traditionally, Samsung offers the S-Pen and has the gold standard of pen input under the hood: Wacom EMR. I´m using Wacom Cintiq displays with this pen technology, and they´re excellent. Microsoft´s Slim Pen 2 combined with the latest iteration of their pen protocol (2.5) has come a long was over previous versions, but is not on par with Wacom EMR. I´d say it´s about 85%-90% where Wacom EMR/Samsung S-Pen is. What are the differences in particular? a) Initial activation force: That is the force required to make a contact of the pen tip with the display register in the app you´re using. IAF is practically zero with Samsung S-Pen, Slim Pen 2 will require a slightly higher IAF. You will probably not notice the difference when writing with the pen, but you may notice a difference when sketching and are laying down very faint strokes or dots in rapid order. With the S-Pen you can be assured that each and every one of them will register, not quite so with Microsoft´s Slim Pen 2. But the differences are really subtle, and depending on how "heavy handed" you are may not notice any differences at all. b) Line wobble: Line jitter has plagued the Surface product line for a loooooong time - until the Surface Pro 8 and the Surface Laptop Studio. Again, not quite on par with Samsung S-Pen, but it has gotten leaps and bounds better. Quite frankly, I consider the faint residual line wobble a non-issue by now, for a simple reason: The faster the pen tip moves over the display, the less line wobble there is. Microsoft has by now so much control over this problem, you´d have to move the pen very slowly to make this visible - but the slower you move the pen, the more jittery and unsteady your hand and fingers will become anyway (try this with a normal pencil on paper). I believe that during writing and sketching, you´ll not notice anything really. On the other side, line wobble is basically unknown in Wacom EMR/Samsung S-Pen territory. c) Tactile experience: Samsung S-Pen has the advantage of feeling most organic, because the pen tip is made of a softer material. Slim Pen 2 does not feel bad, but it gives you the impression of hard plastic on perfectly smooth glas. d) Pen charging: Slim Pen 2 must be charged (but will probably get you through a whole day), whereas the S-Pen does not need to be charged. e) Cost: S-Pen is included, Slim Pen 2 is not (and will cost around 100-120 if bough individually). After all these good news about Samsung´s S-Pen, are there disadvantages as well? Actually, there are: Palm rejection in Slim Pen 2 is 100% perfect and accurate, not so much with the S-Pen. If you set down the palm to begin writing or sketching with the Samsung S-Pen, it is entirely possible that your palm will leave a dot behind before the pen tip registers. You can mitigate this problem by using a drawing glove which will cover your palm (and reduce smudges on the display as a side effect), but the question is if you want to wear one through several hours of lectures. One difference which I find quite mystifying: Microsoft Surface products have in their Surface setting panel a globalized pressure curve setting. On a scale from one to ten you can set how strongly the pen will register with the display, independently of the app you´re working in. In Samsung world, this doesn´t exist, and I do not have the slightest clue why that is so. If the app which you´re working in doesn´t offer that feature, you must accept the preinstalled settings of the driver software for the S-Pen.

@@omarridwan879 Now, what about the differences between Samsung Galaxy Book 3 360° variants and Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio? Well, both have pros and cons. On the pro side for Samsung (and again: Keep in mind I´m more familiar with the Pro-variant of the Galaxy Book 3 360°!): The display is gorgeous - after the 2nd gen of this product offered a full HD 15,6 display with a 16:9 aspect ratio, the 3rd gen version has a 3K 16inch display with a 16:10 aspect ratio. This translates into a lot more real estate to work on. There are still plenty of 2nd gen devices around for less money, but maybe the improvements in the display alone may justify going for the current generation device. The non-Pro versions come with either a 13,3 or a 15.6 display. We talked already about the advantages of the S-Pen. Compared to the 2nd gen, the 3rd gen seems considerably more sturdy. 1st and 2nd gen versions had a fair amount of wobble in the display, and Samsung has gotten rid of it now. As far as hardware is concerned, it´s a mixed bag: On the pro side, Samsung has put 13th gen CPUs in it´s device. Surface Laptop Studio is stuck with 11th gen. There are rumors about a 2nd gen Surface Laptop Studio with some very interesting specs: 13th gen Intel core CPU, Nvidia RTX 4060, and up to 64GB Ram(!!), due to be released in October or November this year. Rest assured this will cost you an arm and a leg, though, and the question is if you can wait this long. So, while Samsung sports the more powerful CPU, it is limited to 16GB Ram, and integrated Intel Iris X graphics, whereas Microsoft offers more Ram, more HD space, and a dedicated (albeit mediocre) GPU. Quite frankly, I´ll never understand why Samsung didn´t equip the Galaxy Book 3 Pro 360, which is specifically geared towards graphic artists, with 32GB Ram and a dedicated mid-range GPU. Would´ve made a huge difference....! As I said earlier, the Samsung display rotates 360°. Though this may seem like a neat trick, personally I believe this may become cumbersome if you have to constantly lift the device and rotate the screen to get in and out of tablet mode to write or sketch on it. The Surface Laptop Studio shifts almost seamlessly from one mode to the other, making your life easier that way. Finally, while the built quality of the Samsung is good, or very good, the Surface Laptop Studio just seems more solid and well put together, as does the MS Surface line in general. To wrap it all up: In the end, it´s 100% your choice, but my gut feeling tells me maybe a Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio fits your needs best. Unless you have a very specific reason to get the best possible drawing/sketching experience in a 2-in-1, I believe the MS SLS will offer more than enough in this department, and if you go for the higher spec´d versions, you will have more of a hardware margin around CPU performance, though admittedly 11th gen Intel core is nothing to become ecstatic about these days. Maybe what should be a consideration for every day usage is the question how much of a bother it will be for you having to charge the pen, as opposed to the S-Pen which is always ready to go, contrasted with the fact that the Slim Pen 2 will attach magnetically to the Microsoft SLS in a nook designed specifically for this, whereas the S-Pen has nowhere to be attached to in the Galaxy Book 3 Pro 360 and will have to be stored separately. Anyway, hope this helps!

Nice Video. Dell XPS 13 2-in1 is a decent pc and better than the Surface Pro 9. In Australia, Dell's PC is much more expensive than Microsoft's... Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is AU $2,998.40 i5 standard. Microsoft Pro 9 is AU $2,228.95 i5 Evo + Keyboard(including pen). It depends on what region and what u need it for. But excellent video btw

Hello, im a newbie to computer tech and wanted a laptop for my engineering projects (I use programs that have simulations, modelling and coding like cad/aspen/Matlab etc.) and I wanted a laptop that can handle things without crashing or lagging but has decent battery life. I found the xps15 perfect but then I saw how everyone says it needs to be plugged in otherwise it crashes on programs and overheats. What is a laptop that can handle heavy things like xps15 but doesn’t come with these issues? Thx

When it comes to engineering and 3d programs like CAD, you're better off going with a laptop that has a dedicated GPU. It can run simulations and is exactly what you need in engineering. I'm in civil engineering and I use an ROG Zephyrus that has a 3060. It doesn't lag. I use AutoCAD, Revit, even Vegas Pro for video editing. Highly recommend. A productivity laptop like the Surface Pro or XPS 2 in 1 are great for note taking.. but they don't have the graphical power needed for our use case

The rear camera not being flush-mounted is annoying to me. The connector to the keyboard looks like it would break over time. The Surface Pro 9 doesn't have a headphone port either. They are just going away on devices in general by the look of things. Looks like a good device by the look of it and a better price - but you do loose a few things with this.

Never get an xps.. I got one 1 year and 1 month back, look after it as it was gold and out of nowhere the motherboard got damaged along with the power button, the warranty didn't cover it, dell support service did not reply and I lost 1.500€.

I like Surface but this is looking good in terms of value for money.. it only misses the kickstand and 120hz. for me 60hz is also good so its only the kickstand. Comparable surface with less 256GB is 2149 in Canada and this is 1524 with 512GB.. wish surface had better pricing but we know Microsoft dont wont to mess with OEMs. Thanks for the review, great device

If you value the kickstand, 120hz, good pen performance, or lappable keyboard inclination, then this Dell is not good value for money.
@nsns1996
@nsns1996 Жыл бұрын
@@JohnSmith-gb8hd it is if you compare on specs/price.. i'm ok with 256 but 16GB is nice and future proof. I have a Pro5 now and my first pick is still SURFACE, just love that kickstand. Another advantage is no bloat installed on MS devices that OEMs add. I can deal with that but a normal user cannot and it ruins their experience by running everything at startup

The big and interesting aspect to this that sets it apart from the SP9 for me is that it is fanless. No sound is a hugely important thing for folks that are using these things in a recording studio. My SP8 fans are LOUD AS HELL.

Thank you, Andrew, for another excellent Best Buy Holiday Video. This laptop is better than the Microsoft Surface Pro 9, pure and simple. Same keyboard cover concept than the original Galaxy Book 12, which is a terrible experience compared to what a Surface Pro with kickstand and keyboard cover gives. More so when you need to use a pen. And let's not start comparing the quality of the two pens: day and night. 👍

Nice PC for those who want this type of unit. Agree it is a better deal than what Microsoft offers. The one big negative with Microsoft and the way they sell is that everything is offered a la carte which tends to make it quite pricey. The Dell unit has a very good camera and the mics sounded good and clear. Display excellent. Keyboards on both appeared good. Excellent review.

Comparing to my current Dell Latitude 7200 2-in-1, this new stand is much worse and less desirable as for me. Currently during working hours, I may detach a keyboard, connect to display with wirelessly connected keyboard and mouse via Thunderbolt cable and may stand this small "screen" anywhere around with any angel. After work, I may bring my Latitude to home desktop, stand it aside without keyboard and share Dell KM7321 Multidevice Wireless keyboard and Mouse across both these devices just switching between them. Considering all these told, there is not any benefit of having this device. The only option, it is to bring it into bed. Ordinary laptop would be more preferable. The only thing about this "laptop" it is desperately anticipated passively cooled laptops on Intel CPU. As mine almost never switches its fan on, in how I use it. So, very doubtful fan installing there was.

@@andrewmarcdavid There's a few problems with that "lower price" argument. First, the Surface products generally are nore reliable than Dell, who has multiple known QC issues over the past 5 years with this XPS line. And second, if the SSD in a recent Surface device fails, you can either replace it yourself (the Surface Pro devices) or get a technican to do just that repair (the Surface Laptops 3 & later), which prevents e-waste, saves you money, and is overall better. Dell is going really too far into that method, so while it may seem you pay less, you kinda get what you pay for.
