You've absolutely nailed it re how bad their configurator is. I actually like the size of the machine but battery life is appalling. I wish we had something as efficient as the M1. Sadly I'm not a fan of MacOS but I do envy the hardware they have!
@mikedropstech
@mikedropstech Жыл бұрын
Hey Alan, I feel your pain. I wish the Windows manufacturers would step their game up too and you'd be amazed how many comments I get about that configurator. It seems folks are either with me all the way, or think I'm insane with not many in between 😱! I've been testing a Samsung Galaxy Book 2 this week for a new review that I picked up (i7, 16gb, 256gb) and cost my $699! It might not have quite the polish of my Macbook Pro 14, but I couldn't bought 3 of them for the same price and it's not that far off!

Thanks for the review! possibly a dumb question but i’m really on the fence here. I’m either getting the New XPS 13 (i7-1250U, 16GB Ram, 512GB SSD) or the New XPS 13 Plus (i5-1240P, 8GB Ram, 512GB SSD). I’m not gonna be doing a lot of gaming on these but i’ll probably play some lower end games that aren’t gonna be over 2GB in size. This is also gonna be a laptop for college. Will appreciate your answer as I’m extremely confused right now even after watching your comparison between the two.

would be nice to have a timeline indicating different review sections of the laptop like specs, display, sound quality etc etc
@mikedropstech
@mikedropstech 2 жыл бұрын
I hear ya and we used to do timestamps across the videos. As I’m learning (from comments) and growing in the approach, I’m finding super technical viewers will typically watch the Uber tech reviewers (which isn’t me) so where I can bring more value is in the normal, day to day experience of using a device and as that changes by device, it makes it harder to really pinpoint some of the transitions. Another issue is that if someone just skips to battery for example, they might miss something really interesting or unique in the review or worse, miss another comment about the display choices for example, that can also impact battery life (for example 4K vs OLED seems to cost juice). Rather than repeat myself in both sections, figured it’s easier to just work through the observations and hope folks can enjoy more of the review. Not a perfect solution I know, but I genuinely think time stamping isn’t either and I’m guessing it’s why so many of the bigger reviewers don’t do it yet almost all of the smaller ones do.

This definitely not a powerhorse, I am so happy they made it that small and tiny, since people buy this mostly for portability, I have a powerful desktop at home and get this one to carry around to university or to work just deal with some presentation, light office work. I get this one and macbook air m2 13, since this is way smaller than macbook air, I decide to keep xps 13 and return macbook air. Just because the size for form factor is the game changer for me.

Hey, great review ! I'm currently thinking about buying this laptop because it seems to fit my needs. But I have a concern about the processor, I can't figure out if should better go with the i5 or i7. Considering I can have the i7 version for the same price as the i5 version (thanks to an offer in my region), I was planning to go for the i7 with no hesitation, but I'm afraid the i7 will reduce battery life and heat more.But at the same time, according to intel's website, the i7 has the same power consumption as the i5 : 9W ! So I'm a bit confused and don't really know which one to take.... If you could help me with that it would be great !!
@mikedropstech
@mikedropstech Жыл бұрын
The 12th Gen has been super confusing because the i5 performance is so close to the i7 and the heat thing hasn't gone away. I know everyone is different but I'd likely never buy an i7 laptop. I just value battery life and less heat more than a tiny performance bump 😱

13:55 I have the XPS 13 9300, and I've yet to turn off my screen while aiming for the delete key. You'll need way more pressure applied on that power button than the pressure you use to type for your screen to turn off. By the way, in the power settings, there's an option to set the power button to "do nothing" when you press it. This will eliminate any accidental actions. Anyway, thanks for the review/rant. Personally, I won't be getting another XPS 13 until Dell adds a high refresh rate screen (at least 90Hz), and a 1080p webcam

Good review, I'm interested if you tested battery life for regular work? They claim 16 hours on their website and I'd be amazed if it's half of that.
@mikedropstech
@mikedropstech Жыл бұрын
Hey Mick! I don’t tend to go crazy on battery testing because it’s just so variable for every user. I do however test for lightweight, everyday style usage (web browsing, email etc.) to get a feel for where a device would fall and you’re right, there’s little chance you’re gonna see 16 hours on this. My best estimate in real world day to day usage is around 8 hours.

Hi nice vid I'm pretty clueless on Dell Windows laptops since I've been using a 2011 MBA since, well 2011, but i like what i see in Windows 11 (never thought I'd say that about any Windows drop) so thinking of going with a Dell XPS 13 model plus the recent discounts are great. Not a real power user mainly Office apps, Chrome browsing and some light photo/vid editing so i assume the i5 wouid be plenty good enough for me? Does the i5 option have significantly better battery performance than i7? TIA.

I’m going to have to Disagree with most of the comments and your review. After several years of experience in IT, I can tell you that having specifications clearly marked on all options is a godsend. A great majority of Dells orders come from businesses, companies, and corporations. That’s where people like me have to order a massive amount of differently specced laptops. Concerning the size, in a post COVID era, the smaller the better for executives who travel and for workers who frequently visit clients
@mikedropstech
@mikedropstech Жыл бұрын
Hey Julio. I hear ya on the size. It's a personal preference for sure but I feel as though they could have eeked a tiny bit more screen real estate and still given us a tiny laptop 😀 but on the specs, we can agree to disagree. I was an IT admin years ago and if all the ram is DDR5 then I'd have been fine with them just telling me once instead of 3 times on the same line of text. I guess it's personal preference again but it's all good, this is the fun of being able to chat and choose what works best for us individually! Thanks for watching and sharing your insights buddy!

I just got mine a day or two ago. I love it... Save for one issue. I bought the Umber color, based on the way it looked on my desktop monitor I expect more of a copper color, in person it's a lot closer to purple. I'm embracing the purple, but it was a surprise when I pulled it out of the box. While we're making laws about delete keys and power buttons, can we make a law about confusing color names? Primary colors only please, for dummies like me.
@mikedropstech
@mikedropstech Жыл бұрын
Oh dude! No way. I’d be so gutted if the color looked different in real life and it’s tough because you can’t just go look at them at the store nowadays. I thought the umber was more of a chocolate color on my screen so where purple came from I’ve got no idea!

I bought this recently with the hd touch screen (4k is an unneeded battery drain on a 13” machine) I got it with the i7, 32gb ram and 1tb ssd and what I now have is a small form factor laptop that is PERFECT for travelling with, I travel all over the globe for work and this is a game changer, it can do 8 hours work on one charge and can charge quickly in less than a couple of hours.. I can work on trains and on planes, I can work at the airport all on a speedy machine that has decent battery life, the plus has a better processor granted but it comes at a cost (battery) and also is terrible at cooling so throttle locks itself.. meaning you don’t get to use that power.. so it is way better to nerf it and buy the 9315 with the 1250u, It also has the better keyboard on the 9315 the 9320 is gimmicky and I need that full function row instead of touch capacitor junk.. this new 9315 is the answer to my prayers and I can’t praise it highly enough.. sure the mac m2 is better but some of us need to use windows for work because it makes life easier when rdp’ing into windows machines and using ssms on virtual servers.. I could probably get away with a mac but it makes it more of a faff to work around

I really like how you present things and you speak to normal people in a very non scripted and conversational way as opposed to reading from a teleprompter. Too many youtubers seem to think we are all content creators and gamers and not enough present all of these little nuances that you do that really dive into the everyday use experience. Hey buddy! Thanks for watching, subscribing and throwing a little ❤️ my way. Much appreciated and hope you enjoy the shout out in todays video! As for my daily driver, that’s a loaded question! I have multiple devices on the go because I test so many, but right now, I still revert back to an M1 MacBook Air when I need to get my own stuff done. Partly because it’s setup and logged in to all my accounts so it’s easy, and partly because of battery life which is a big deal to me (I hate having cords plugged in when I’m using on my lap which is most of the time). Windows is my preferred OS as philosophically, I feel as though Microsoft tries harder to deliver more value with less up charging and I still pay for all my gear so it matters. I just need a stronger device on the hardware side to help me permanently switch. If I was buying a device today, I’d go with the Surface Laptop Studio for build quality or XPS Plus (review dropping today) for 12th gen. In a month, let’s see what the M2 MacBook Air can do.

The review is good;. I was picking between this or the 13 Plus and I think I'll be getting the 13 Plus. I'll wait for the comparison. I found the spiel about Dell's marketing, website UI, etc. dragged out a bit. Didn't really feel like it got into a review until ~7-8 minutes in. I agree with you that some 14" would be a great sweetspot for screensize and options. I'm running a 2015 XPS 13 at the size of this thing compared to more modern laptops, I reckon you could get good thermals, and all the I/O people want without a huge compromise on size.

Dell will make their site look like a 90s malware ridden html webpage but contrary to that, their products are so futuristic and good looking. They'll not market the amazing speakers, deep contrasts of the screen and razor sharp thinness of the product but write all the crap we don't even care about! You hit the nail on the head. These were my exact thoughts when buying mine. They really need to fire their marketing team and the whatever team that handles their website.
