For those who are thinking about getting this pc, there are a lot of things you have to do to make it run well with good temperatures. You have to change the cpu cooler to a vtroo v5 cooler (this is plug and play). DO not buy 3200mhz ram because the board only supports 2933mhz ram and buying 3200mhz will only be a waste of money. If you are going to buy ram, make sure that the ram operates at specifically 1.2v. Also, buy a vrm heat sink so that it is regulated and does not overheat. Also, use the fans from the dell cpu heatsink and re-use it as an intake fan towards the bottom. (I have an i7-11700 with a 3070ti). With good cooling and upgrades, this can be the ultimate pc you own. Also, use hwinfo to control the fans.

Just a heads up, 4 DIMMs does not mean quad channel. All mainstream boards (LGA 1200/115X and AM4 sockets) support dual channel RAM configurations only. Quad channel is only supported by HEDT MOBO''s and processors like X99, X299, Threadripper, etc. And on many of those boards, you can install up to 8 DIMMs.

I got one of the white ones with the 3060Ti, i7, and upgraded cooler (this part’s really key) back in April when the shortage was really kicking off and I’ve been happy with it so far. I probably paid a tiny bit more than I’d have wanted, especially for the cooler upgrade simply to ensure adequate cooling, but I needed a computer and things were (and are) super uncertain. I really appreciate the retro-modern case. In white it reminds me of the first PC my dad got back in the 90s, which was kind of my goal.

The computers I would recommend would be abs master with the RTX 3060ti and similar i7 11700f, or CyberpowerPc Fall Special 1 with the RX 6600 XT and similar i7 11700f. The cooling is inadequate because the non-K models weren't designed to run at boost speeds for any prolonged length of time - that's how they can rate the TDP at only 65W. Intel's own stock cooling doesn't work any better. I wouldn't be surprised if the benchmark delta you're seeing is possibly the result of some difference in motherboard/bios settings in addition to aftermarket cooling. The performance you're experiencing is pretty much what it's designed to give.

Thank you so much for talking about this machine! I bought a 3060ti variant about a month back and have had problems with it crashing ever since (Clock_Watchdog_Timeout and Machine_Check_Exception error codes) and believed I'd narrowed it down to the temp, but, being very new to the technical side of computer, worried I'd come to find that the temp was only the tip of the iceberg and the rest of the box was incompatible or unusable. It sounds like upgrading the cooling or somehow pushing work onto the graphics card rather than cpu is what I need to do. This has given me a tentative peace of mind that I'm extremely grateful for! That said, if I've misunderstood anything or you know something else I don't know, please feel free to reply and let me know.

I highly doubt Dell will listen to anybody about putting beefier coolers on the high end CPUs they get their grubby hands on. You can basically just tell the CPU to thermal throttle on command. Its absolutely terrible. You could do what Dawid did on his channel. He put a Noctua NH-U9S on his 10700 which was also in a Dell XPS build. It brought thermals down by a LOT.
@alexisrivera200xable
@alexisrivera200xable 2 жыл бұрын
If the CPU is hitting 86c when booting and opening a few simple apps? Sounds like they didn't apply the thermal paste properly. I mean the cooler is obviously insufficient but even then the temps spiking at such low usage levels often means poor contact between the cooler and the CPU's IHS. In some odd cases it could also mean that the CPU's IHS is not flat enough and thus it hinders the cooler's performance.

Great review, as always. I don't know why stock coolers are still such complete garbage. It's definitely not quad channel RAM. Only server grade processors can do quad channel ram (like intel's X series and AMD's Threadripper and Epyc series). True quad channel motherboards usually have RAM slots on both sides of the processor. What happens when you have 4 sticks of RAM otherwise is that it still runs in dual-channel mode but, depending on the motherboard's architecture, the RAM is either accessed daisy-chained (each pair of sticks' memory addresses are treated as if they were one much larger stick, better for stable overclocking) or T-topology (each pair of sticks are dealt with in parallel, generally faster than daisy-chained).

As an aside: just because a machine is using 4 RAM sticks doesn't make it "quad channel" it's still "dual channel", just using 2 sticks per channel (interleaved). A true "quad channel" setup is something HEDT (High-End Desk Top) grade like Threadripper. Those "require" 4 sticks (in the same vein that "regular" machines "require" 2 sticks to work at maximum potential).

Using 4 DIMMs for a dual rank configuration definitely improves performance, but it's NOT 20%. Hell, even 10% is uncommon. And remember, you have to be CPU limitted to see that performance improvement, which will be rare with this hardware configuration.

Not bad Dell has it priced at $1899. Taking everything into account, if you can hold out until next year it may be $200 cheaper once things stabilize. Either way it's a gamble.

So mine came with an i9-11900k and a 3070, I got the premium cooler and I had the same heat issues. if you crack the case open it will drop significantly. One place I stepped up was the back exhaust fan. It has holes for a 92MM fan so I put a Noctua NF-a9 in. I then removed the front drive cage. Mine has the m.2 but there is a cage up top as well if you have an SSD. On a bench it will put to 100 but dropped my games into the 75C range for the cpu and the GPU stays roughly the same with the case shut. My benches went up a small amount, it did improve my throttling and it idles at lot cooler as well

Excellent video. Is it hard to change out that cooling fan? What cooling fans are applicable with the XPS 8940? I am buying one for myself in the next couple of months.

UPDATE: ordered the Dell XPS 8940... similar to this one you reviewed but mine on order has the i9 processor (2.5 and 5.2 GHz) and the 3070 graphics card. Everything else the same.... I'll look into the fan issue when it arrives. Hopefully, it's been resolved but this isn't the first video that talks about questionable cooling.

I mean, you install many repetitive games in each laptop and pc (and some older one even don't have SSD) and I'm curious to know how much time it takes it each occasion... And please mention if you install them at once using some tools, or using online installers?
