Delmar is a hamlet located in the town of Bethlehem in Albany County, New York, United States. It's situated just south of the city of Albany, the state capital. Delmar is a suburban community with a mix of residential, commercial, and recreational areas.
Since 1980, the U.S. Census Bureau has designated Delmar as a census-designated place (CDP) to track the population within the defined urbanized area in and around Delmar.
Delmar gained recognition in 2005 when CNN/Money Magazine ranked its ZIP Code as the 22nd "Best Place to Live" in America among "Great American Towns.”
Historically, Nathaniel Adams played a pivotal role in the area's development, moving there in 1836 and contributing to the construction of a hotel. The hamlet was initially named Adamsville but later changed to Delmar to avoid confusion with Adams, New York. Notable landmarks, such as the Patterson Farmhouse, United States Post Office, and Van Derheyden House, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Geographically, Delmar's borders are somewhat indeterminate, but the village is generally considered centered around the intersection of Kenwood and Delaware avenues. The community is characterized by several small creeks and streams, with the Normans Kill to the north and Dowers Kill to the south.
According to the 2000 census, Delmar's CDP had a population of 8,292 people, residing in 3,420 households. The racial makeup was predominantly White, with notable percentages of Asian and African American residents. The median household income was $64,438, and the median family income was $83,219. Delmar is known for its family-friendly environment, with a mix of housing, good schools, and a range of amenities.
