Casually "Blood, fish, and bone meal" 😆 Love the backyard feel of the video and you just sharing what you care about. I don't mind the lawn mower here and there..I do recommend getting $25 lav mics so that we can hear your wisdom better, though. God bless you

I have a blue Pacific Giant delphinium that I planted in about 2015 - so 10 years old (holding my breath!) and about 5-6 feet tall. I am near Denver, Zone 5, cold winters, wind. I put 3 tomatoe cages around them - just added a fourth - which I attach to each other and to the fence. I intend to plant a few more since I'm not sure how much longer it will live. Love them!

I just found this video and I'm glad I did! Good to know that I wasn't doing something wrong as to why the "perennial" ones I was buying at the big box stores weren't coming back in my zone 5. The first one I bought did, but it didn't make it due to rot. I wouldn't buy the seeds because I thought they wouldn't come back, but I will try next year or see if I can still find seeds and try to start now inside, and transplant in the fall.

Thanks for watching. Pacific giants are hit or miss as far as if they’ll come back or not,but they are nice in their own right. Magic fountain series is good, belladonna. If your looking for seed try The Delphinium Society, Blackmore and Langdon, Larkspur Nursery all out of the UK, I’ve had good results with all 3. I’ve heard good things about New Zealand Delphinium seed as well. If your looking for plants we should have some delphiniums available next year. We should all grow more delphiniums.

I grow Elatum varieties as I consider them more floriferous and they also live longer than Pacific hybrids, at least they do here in the UK. Thanks for the tip about staking - growing them in a sheltered area is also recommended.

Wow those are high I’ve seen some pictures of older types of delphinium some astronomical height like that. Glad to hear that their perennial for you it seems to be more of an exception then the rule for a lot of us.

I bought a delphinium a couple years ago and it comes back every year and blooms beautifully. Big gorgeous purple blooms. I have a question about what was said about cutting it back to about an inch above the ground after it blooms in hopes of getting a second bloom. If I do that won't water get inside the plant? As the stems are big and hollow. So if it rained or water from the sprinkler got in the stem could that cause crown rot? I live in zone 5, SE Idaho.

I’m happy your enjoying growing delphinium. A little bit will always get in. I wouldn’t worry to much about it though. I personally know people that have had the same delphinium for up to 10 years without a problem. It’s been a year since, I shot this video, but typically, I don’t cut the old stalk until another shoot is coming up or when the leaves are starting to die back. Then I’ll cut to about an inch above the ground. Typically crown rot is an issue due to a delphinium not be planted in the right spot, an unusually wet year, or not staking a delphinium which increases the chances of when the flower spike/stalk breaks of it splitting the crown, and it rotting that way.

To help drainage and to help deter slugs which, I typically don’t have a problem with.

Thank you for the video. If these self seed, do the seeds spread and travel far? I didn’t realize how poisonous they are and I put them in a terrible spot and I don’t want them all over my front yard. I want to move them but when is the best time to move these? Thank you for any advice!
@goodsoilnursery
@goodsoilnursery Ай бұрын
You’re welcome and thanks for watching. These don’t self seed all that well with the exception of the species delphinium (Requenieii). If you are thinking about moving them fall or spring. Most plants are poisonous, and you would have to eat delphiniums for it to do anything. We have multiple dogs, cats, kids and wildlife as long as that don’t like munching on random leaves they would be fine.

@chrisdreisch6332
@chrisdreisch6332 3 жыл бұрын
English delphiniums, belladonnas, some species delphinium, grandiflorums, magic fountains. The ones that might have a harder time I think would be the pacific giants or delphinium out of New Zealand. They are some other varieties around the world. Overall delphiniums typically do well in the cold.

@@chrisdreisch6332 Thank you! We bought Pacific Giant "Percival" (there weren't many choices or left in the garden centre). I assume this is perennial? Thanks again!
@goodsoilnursery
@goodsoilnursery 3 жыл бұрын
Your welcome. Yes and no. They are labeled perennial but when they were originally bred they were never bred to be perennial. However I know of people that have them and they come back every year and for others they don’t and they just treat them as annuals. Either way pacific giants are a beautiful delphinium.

What you could do is put the seed in the refrigerator for about a week so it can go through cold stratification. Make sure to get good seed I recommend Larkspur Nursery, Blackmore and Langdon, and The Delphinium Society for seed I’ve heard good things about New Zealand Delphinium seed as well. Don’t use a seed starting mix it gets to dry, use compost or even potting soil. I use 50 cell plug trays put in the soil from it put more in if needed. Then poke holes roughly a finger nail deep just cover up, and water from below. Best of luck! If you have any more questions let me know.

You can put your seeds inside of a tupperware container,place them on top of a thick layer of paper towel and water them enough to keep the paper towel moist close it up and put them in a dark warm place (room temperature is fine) every other day spray them with water and put them back in about 10 days you should be ready to plant them in pots,once potted put them in a warm bright spot (not direct sunlight) water them as needed and watch your seedlings grow 🌱 ,after they are big enough you can transplant them to their permanent spot.
