I am glad I’m not paying for the lub oil for this beasty . This is what happens when the engine is old, worn and been on very light load for too long, it gets blown out after several minutes when on higher continues loading but that is when the silencer drum in the engine room burst into flames ! They always were heavy on blue smoke but nowhere near that example when I was a service engineer for E E Co at Leeds Central in the sixties, they were newer and better financiers then.

Agreed. It makes me sad to see them with token non existent loads. If feel like all engines they need to be worked to stay in their prime.

It's a shame they don't or can't modify the exhaust to drain the excess oil to a waste tank or something, I can imagine at some point they might be stopped from running if they can't control it.

The reason l think it is smoking is that can run as a full diesel or a 2 stroke or mixed.
@davidwedlock26225 ай бұрын
It's a 2 stroke engine. They always made a lot of smoke as it's total loss lube. Nothing to do with wear.

Too many people on Earth : we all know, but don’t say a word about that. It’s a dangerous and slippery field, you know. Who are those ones too many ?... Some have their more or less precise answer to this question, not only Russians who began attacking Ukraine nearly two years ago, but even in the most democratic countries like ours, and are getting ready for the next elections. This is no time for joking about that. Besides, the loc is impressive. Greetings from France.

Superb capture, many thanks for posting. Looked like she was on both power units, and on such a light load. This is the problem with the Deltics. They were designed to work on full power at high speed with a full load. when the pu's are under utilised such as in this situation, or when idling for a long time they produce this "clag". It is mainly caused, not by faulty engines as some suggest, but by accumulated oil in the exhaust system which is burned when power is applied. When you see a Deltic on full power with a full load the fumes, although still there, are vastly reduced from what you see here. (Don't forget these engines are 2 stroke). kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q6qda9J4lt-mZI0.html

I couldn't have put it better :) It's also ironic that the opposed-piston design is clean and efficient in some respects, hence no black smoke (except when firing up).
@danielbarton92915 ай бұрын
Excellent summary. Just in the right place at the right time to capture that burst of full power.
@nickedwards29045 ай бұрын
its a 2 stroke mixture so yes that engine had idled coming to that bend and when it was opened up the oil was surplus and burnt, it was clean going under and away from the bridge . deltics were always like this
@dennislane1005 ай бұрын
It’s a two stroke DIESEL!That’s not the same as a two stroke petrol engine. That’s vapourised diesel from exhaust build up causing the blue “smoke”. It’s the black smoke which is the nasty stuff;-full of dangerous particulates! We used Detroit two stroke diesels in powerboats,back in the day. They were powerful,but noisy and thirsty, but I don’t recall any of them kicking out too much smoke. Main problem was the throughput of warm diesel going back to the tank via the return line. It used to heat up the remaining diesel in the tank,and caused vapour locks in the feed lines. We cured it by putting coolers on the return lines,but not before it caused a few issues!
@ac2litre5 ай бұрын
@@dennislane100 I have the original Napier engine brochures with data on lubricating oil consumption/passing. Oil is force fed to the pistons for cooling and lube. The piston design is unique to Deltics. It then passes out through the exhaust ports. Exhaust velocity drops in the collector-drum causing precipitation of lube oil during idling. It then gets blown out when the engine next revs up.
@v8pilot5 ай бұрын
I had a Ford Anglia that made white smoke like that. When I dismantled the engine I found that every piston had lost at least one piston ring. Maybe the Deltic has the same problem.
@raybarnes6305 ай бұрын
It does have a tendency to smoke like that sometimes being a 2 stroke
@Kalvinjj5 ай бұрын
@@raybarnes630 Then again it's a diesel 2 stroke so it just takes up tons of air and fuel comes only at the combustion point, shouldn't be eating too much oil.

Still comments from some who appear to know little about these machines. Deltics are opposed piston engines so have double the number of pistons passing a little oil every stroke, Add in the three bank Deltic configuration and the operation at 1,200 or so RPM thats a lot of pistons (36 cylinders, 72 pistons) stroking every minute. So unless the piston liner, rings and piston ring grooves are all spot on in every liner you will get more oil passed than a EE, Sulzer, GM power unit etc . Power output will also alter the Deltic supercharger outputs so pootling at 25MPH tends to suck oil in through seals and labyrinth glands as their is little boost pressure. All this is collected in the drum which drains excess off but any left on the surfaces, carbon build up etc will 'burn off' when powered up. This is normal on any engine just more noticeable on Deltics due to the design and numbers of cylinders. Paxmans in the HSTs used to suck oil out at Stations and cover KX/Padd in blue on leaving.

'Wet stacking' is a well-known problem with big diesel engines run at light load for extended duration. I ran into this with a 70 litre Caterpillar V16 diesel driving a 2 MVA generator, it was much happier once we got a load bank connected to avoid running it unloaded (unusual intermittent load profile). The load bank also made for a good space heater...
@ianluce92974 ай бұрын
similar but I believe its a common issue with the scavenger box collecting oil in the bottom and when you open the throttle fully it blows it all out the exhaust, it can also lead to exhaust fires, I believe they would stop in this situation and run the engine flat out until it burnt out, please quote me though if I am wrong on this, you can see them do this with Russian 2te10 's similar opposed piston engines with the same issue , you could say it a wet stacking issue I guess
