Thanks for the review. I am someone more used to hardware instruments and DAW based recording. For a casual user, these get be a bit time consuming and technical to toss something simple together. Ive only had my Synthstrom a few days but have been loving how much raw FUN it is to make music again. You can visually toss together multiple tracks and prototype arrangements without much thought or overhead. It allows you to get technical, but doesnt require it.

Your analysis is one of the finest one on YT. This gem need a serious learning curve, and the cryptic screen is constantly telling you: what are you looking there, this is a no screen dawless tool ! I am amazed by the sound ( I recomand to buy few block of 50 synth voice to expand it, quickly to some website before you know how to build your own voice). Caution, it is a very serious tool , and you will have to sacrifice time to learn how to do thinks...but then you can sold all your other device in your studio appart your speakers as the one onboard is just to check if your headphone is broken. A good point is that looking to the screen your friend think you speek hebrew... and sometime you too.

Really excellent review! I've been aware of it for a while now, and actually had no idea it was that obscure of an instrument (can be hard to tell sometimes). That being said, I had no idea it was so small. Even after watching several videos and seeing plenty of pics, once you put the tape measure up it really clicked for me. Damn! One question I would have is how well would this integrate into a hardware daw? can it export midi? or just audio? would it be something I can create with and then export for final mixing and touchups in something like ableton? I have a few other devices but I'm trying to simplify right now after finding myself not using them as much as I'd hoped, and maybe I can swap a bunch of them for just the single deluge. Thanks again and keep up the great videos!
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I’m glad you liked it and it helped. As far as DAW integration, I have heard of people using it to sequence their DAW. Regarding exporting midi, I do not believe there is an integrated feature for this. But you can record the midi notes into your DAW via Midi. Bouncing audio stems is a much requested feature, but not integrated as far as I know. I could see a workflow in which you use the Deluge as a sketch pad to generate ideas, then bring those ideas into Ableton or another DAW. With a little effort, you could transfer the song (audio and/or midi) from the Deluge to a Daw. Regarding your other devices and swapping stuff, I guess I’m not sure what else you have. But the Deluge is primarily a great sequencer, then a synth and a sampler. If you have a good hardware synth, then the Deluge would pair well as a sequencer and sampler. But you could also use it as a standalone device. I think it comes down to personal preference in your workflow. And the good news is that the Deluge offers a variety of uses and workflows. I hope that helps.

I got to play a tiny bit with this early as its a local for me but never been able to afford it until recently. This review is really doing it for me! I'm mostly still worried about the learning time and I'm afraid I'll just get frustrated and stop
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. I think it all comes down to your desire for learning. Be it this device or any other, if you don’t dedicate time to practice then the learning curve may not matter. If you have the time and are patient, then you will be rewarded regardless of the instrument. Be it a violin or a Deluge, any instrument worth learning takes effort. With that, the Deluge is an interesting device that you may find engaging and want to spend all your free time with. Since you got to try one, you’ve got first hand experience with one that many others around the world don’t get. That should be an advantage in making your decision. Ultimately, you will know better than anyone if it’s right for you. Good luck and have fun.

@@marcussmithereens-smithert5409 I only just discovered this portable DAWless world. DAWs is what kept me from producing EDM. I got the OP-1 then the OP-Z then the Deluge. I love all 3 but could easily live without both OPs if I just had the Deluge. Deluge > OP-1 > OP-Z Although ppl who prefer step sequencing to tape will prefer the Z to 1. Workflow wise the Deluge can't be beat. So immediate, so easily corrected, so live. It is staggeringly good and near flawless in my estimation.

I think it's worth noting that while the deluge's pads are not velocity sensitive, most if not all of its patches are. I've had mine for a little over a year now, and I truly feel like it has become a part of me. I know it incredibly well and yet there's so much more to explore, and with the consistent, high-quality updates I believe that will always be the case. It is a complete instrument, and using it is a genuine pleasure. It does have its flaws, but many of its early flaws were cured by later software updates. It plays extremely well with other gear too. It can be so many things, there's so much potential in every part of it. It is by far the most expensive part of my studio and I believe it's the best money I've ever spent on music gear. And yes, the team behind it is an absolutely lovely group of people.
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. Could be describe what you mean by most of the patches are velocity sensitive? As in, when used with a velocity sensitive midi keyboard?
@elicohen4515
@elicohen4515 4 жыл бұрын
@@OllieLoops Yes, exactly! They have parameters (such as volume and filter cutoff) mapped to velocity, so the patches sound very dynamic when played with external MIDI. As a result, Keys have way more expression, drums are much more realistic and human, etc. I think you mentioned its multi-sampling capabilities, but they also make the expressiveness of the deluge come alive much more. Build your own multisample, put it in the proper sample folder on the sd card, and it pretty reliably maps it out. Combine this with the velocity sensitivity of external MIDI pads or keys, and it sounds really good. My only real gripe is the effects engine. It's definitely passable, and I will maintain it is an all-in-one box. I like the mod fx and Sidechain compression. The delay gets pretty noisy a lil too easily, and the reverb is... good enough. However, to make it sound REALLY good, external effects go a long way. It easily overcomes any slight problems with the 'quality' of a few fx engines though. The updates have also improved them over time. Ultimately, its portability, flexibility, and capability are all outstanding, especially in one device. It never fails to draw attention anywhere I go. I have so many good memories with it already: Late nights by a fire, jamming in the forest, or even just meditative loop sessions by myself, it's such an incredible thing.

Ollie Loops For a quick jam or sketch, I use an Arturia Keystep, for more intense projects I have an M-Audio Pro 88, which has an abundance of knobs From which I can control any MIDI editable parameters of the deluge and the synths receiving signals from it. I have a Waldorf blofeld I use with it, because the blofeld’s synth engine sounds incredible and it has flexibility in the more extreme parts of sound design, often in places where the deluge is a little more spotty. As for effects, I currently have it running through a Zoom G3X to make up for its effects, although I plan to replace that with Empress’ Zoia once that becomes viable.

I've had mine for a couple years now. The workflow seemed daunting from videos but once I had it in my hands, it was simple. Of course that was just the tip of the iceberg of its capabilities. It is better than everything else I own but the limited outputs does mean I keep another machine around for drum duties when I want to run the Deluge synth through external effects. It's worth double what they charge and I'm considering a 2nd one when funds allow it.

Thanks for your comment. Just to clarify, the screen has 4 characters, but the text of a file name scrolls on it. And the introduction of the qwerty keyboard means you can have typical files names which can be alphanumeric and several characters long. But, I hear ya. It's not the same as having a full display. Hello! Cool video, amazing device ! Is it possible to transfert midi clips to a daw? I was thinking of using it as a sketch composing tool. But after doing a project i would like to put all the midi data in ableton and then choose what sounds i want like other harware synths, vst or even resend the midi to deluges’s synth engine. Is it possible? Otherwise for dawless setups it seems perfect

Thanks for your comment. I believe all project data is contained within a single xml file. To transfer the midi data, I believe a workflow that may work for this would be to connect via midi into Ableton and record the incoming midi from the Deluge. Hey Ollie Loops, I needed some clarity on the description "clips can be muted and soloed, but sounds within a kit cant?" so Deluge doesnt allow sound soloing a sound within a demo? For example: if performing on stage with drum beat, keys, and vocal, I couldnt solo the drums and sing over them , then bring the keys back in?
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops Жыл бұрын
Hey, I’m not sure that’s accurate. You can mute sounds within a kit. And I believe you can mute notes within a synth, but likely you would mute the synth as a whole. Regarding soloing the drums, that’s the part that I don’t think you can do. You would have to mute the sounds you don’t want to hear but cant solo single or multiple sounds. To elaborate, in a live performance, you can mute multiple tracks to create a solo, but that may be cumbersome. Another approach would be to program your song in Arranger view which could bring clips in and out of an arrangement/song.

I liked the history part. I have a question. Which of the devices would be better for overdub recordings? Deluge or MPC LIVE/ONE? Is it possible at all to use these like Boss loopers?
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 4 жыл бұрын
Great Question! A comparison video may be better at showing what workflow may be best for you. I have yet to explore the MPC One’s Looper, so I can’t speak to that yet. But check out our video on the Deluge’s Looper to get a sense for it. It also has an accessory looper pedal you can get. With that, the Deluge may be a bit more similar to Boss style looping.

If you’re super happy with Ableton and Push 2, and if you have an OP-1/OP-Z but are looking for a mobile alternative that is closer to Ableton and Push - would the Deluge be your recommendation for 2020 to create ideas and then finish them in Ableton?

Thanks for your comment and question. There is very few devices that compare to the workflow and features of Ableton and Push 2. That’s my favorite setup. In terms of mobile devices, The Deluge is quite a device and one of the more advanced devices on the market. I would check it out and check out it’s workflow. But know that you would likely have to record (ideally stems) manually from Deluge into Ableton to create a workflow. By contrast, the MPC devices have an Ableton export feature built into the OS. So it depends on how streamlined you want to get. Further, in terms of mobile devices, a tablet with some advanced apps like Beat Maker 3 can surpass most devices on the market. I would look into that as well as it may be the most cost effective solution yet very powerful. I hope that helps.

That’s a lot of comparisons to make. They are all different. With the Korg devices, they tend to be based on 16 step sequences, so they can be the most limiting. The octatrack is similar but has a more powerful sampler. The MPCs are more advanced and similar to DAWs. The Deluge is not like any of these, yet it pulls some features from them. It’s really it’s own thing and the makers are carving their own path in the market. I would suggest that you check out some videos on these devices to compare their workflow for yourself. I hope that helps.

Hey, thanks for your questions. I am still using the Deluge. It's been a crazy year for me personally, so I haven't had much time to experiment and play with the devices as much as I would like. I've never tried to use them together as they have so many overlapping features. But if I did, I suppose I would use the Deluge as a sound module for it's synth features and sequence it via the MPC.

Oh man…small world. I was born in Seattle but live across the water about a half hour from Bremerton right now. I’ve been a slackliner for about 12 years now and have slacked at that exact spot (those trees and shore are so recognizable). I’ve also been a didgeridoo player for about 25 years now and have utilized the acoustics of that small tunnel at GG. I’m getting a Deluge soon! I’m a super noob at music/beat production. Blowing into a hollow log is about the extent of my music knowledge. But I do have a song recorded with a Grammy nominated artist named Zeb the Spy From Cairo. I recorded my part (which was just a long drone with some embellishments…animals and such) years and years back and he got around to using it in a song a few years ago. My playing style has completely changed since then. I play mostly NE Arnhemland traditional style now. It’s much more rhythm based. Zeb took my drone and chopped it up in a slicer type sound. It’s on his bandcamp and on youtube under ‘Amnesiac Gods’. Anyways, cheers! Would love to meet up maybe sometime after I get my Deluge if you’re down. I’m gonna be in over my head. I actually just got a Roland SP 404 MK2 yesterday to get my feet wet in the sample/beat making department…to see if it’s for me.

I believe it has a balanced line stereo output. You would then need to make sure your mix within the device is to your desired mix levels. Otherwise, you could have multiple units, if your budget allows for it.

Hi everyone, I'm considering buying one of these but still have a couple questions about it. Any help would be massively appreciated! 1 - Has anybody tried to connect a midi mixer to it (I'm thinking Novation Launch Control XL or equivalent)? Having to mix / EQ / apply FX to every single element one by one seems like a bit of a pain, so wondering if there is a smart shortcut here? 2 - Is there anyway to export separate stems into a DAW / record them separately? I'm thinking of using this as my main unit so if I draft songs on it I'd need to relatively easily export them to, say, Ableton to finish the arrangement and then move to mixing and mastering. If I have to record every single track one by one with the other ones muted that's going to take ages, and knowing me I'll just end up starting a new project every time lol... Thanks in advance, take care
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question. You should be able to midi map many parameters. I would advice looking into that as it may answer your question. Second, you can’t export stems separately. You would need to mute/solo tracks and record individually. I hope that helps.

I like the Deluge, but I don't use it as much as I thought I would, and it's mainly because of the size of sample kits. There are 128 pads right there and I can't chop a sample into more than 8 slices? That's a huge missed opportunity and I hope they fix that in a future update. I just want to hit Kit > Keyboard mode, and shove 128 samples and sample slices on there to make a massive sound board.

@@OllieLoops I did, months and months ago. Not sure if anyone saw it. I didn't wanna spam so I haven't made repeated requests on the forum, but I recently commented it on the video teasing the next update as well. I really hope they see it, because I want to use the Deluge more but I always run into that limitation and then go back to my PC. I'm starting to consider buying a Blackbox or preordering a Polyend Tracker, and maybe using CV or midi to combine features, but money is an issue, and if the Deluge would just expand the kit feature, that would open up so much and maybe I could finally love the one I'm with.

@@Swenglish Good insight. Thanks for sharing. I think one issue with their user request process is that people have to vote on those features. Although I appreciate the democracy of this process, sometimes this doesn't lead to innovation. Let me share this quote from Steve Jobs: “Some people say, "Give the customers what they want." But that's not my approach. Our job is to figure out what they're going to want before they do. I think Henry Ford once said, "If I'd asked customers what they wanted, they would have told me, 'A faster horse!'" People don't know what they want until you show it to them. That's why I never rely on market research. Our task is to read things that are not yet on the page.”
@Swenglish

@@OllieLoops Yeah, that's a good point. Personally, I kind of made the mistake of assuming this feature would already be there when I ordered my Deluge. I saw the videos of going from synth to keyboard mode and it just kind of made sense that the same would apply to kits, because why wouldn't it, you know? I was surprised to find out that that wasn't the case, because it's such a no-brainer obvious basic function in my mind. If I made a device with 128 pads and sampling/slicing capability, I can't imagine thinking that kits should only have 8 slots. That'd be absurd to find on an MPC, and those only have 16 pads.
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 4 жыл бұрын
@@Swenglish I just had a thought. I recall you can load your own multi-sampled instrument into the Deluge. If thats true, you might/should be able to load any samples in that way and use the keyboard feature that way. Give that a try and let me know if it works. If so, I could make a video about it to share with the community. If it works, if could be like the 64 pad kit on the Ableton Push, but twice as many pads! It seems promising.

Man I just can’t decide if I’ll get an OP-1 or a Deluge... I make hiphop, sample based although I create my own samples more and more recently. I just don’t wanna be stuck behind my desk the whole time and I always loved working with one device. I use Maschine now, no daw, it’s software only. But I need an original device which can do it all and do it differently to keep the ideas coming... and pick it up whenever where ever. So yeah, stuck. Might as well watch more vids lol
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. That’s a good problem to have. Although you can use a number of devices to make sample based hip hop, it comes down to workflow and what you prefer. The OP1 has a very different workflow which some like and some dont. The Deluge is also different but more DAW like than the OP1. It’s also less expensive but more powerful. Outside of those devices, there’s the Digitakt which has a relatively intuitive workflow and sample engine. Then there’s the MPC One. The MPC One is possibly the best suited for hip hop and the most DAW like. It is similar to Maschine, but can be standalone. It’s the one I prefer. There’s also the SP404 series which many producers love. It has a unique and simple workflow, lots of on board effects and it’s one of the cheaper devices in this list. You can find them used for pretty cheap. Although this may further complicate your quest for a device, I hope this information is useful.

Ollie Loops thanks! I own an original sp404 without the copy options among other things, has its ups and downs but love the uniqueness. I work in maschine and I’m looking for something completely different, not just portable, so that’s why I narrowed it down to those two. I’d also like to sound design more and create some unique but vintage sounding things. I actually started out with an mpc60 and a 4 track fostex, so that’s why the op-1 got my attention. Do the tape speeds also create a tape like downgraded sound when you use it to ‘resample’ if you will? I try to make things sound like old samplers, tape and vinyl as much as possible :)

Your videos are always very good . The Deluge is Such a better bargain than the op-1 which was recently increased in price by $500 or $600 more than its original $900 out of greed . The Synthstrom can do way more than an op-1 . The op-1 is fun and easy to play with but its no where near the Deluge particularly for the price of the Deluge compared to the op-1 . The Deluge is like a portable daw and the op-1 is basically a sketch pad . The screen on the op-1s is what really sucks people in i think where as the Deluge lacks a good information/graphics video game like screen.

Thanks! Well, that is a tough a question because only you will know what workflow you will enjoy more. But my insight is that they are both great machines, both with pros and cons. If you’re primarily using it to sequence midi, the Deluge is a better choice. It has more flexibility and power in terms of midi features. It’s sequencer is more advanced and less restricted. Although if you need the visualization and interaction of the MPC’s screen, than the MPC may be a good choice. Good luck!

@@OllieLoops Thanks! By MIDI sequencing I mostly meant sequencing internal synths. I don't plan to drive other synths with it. And I never saw a video in which Deluge's synths would sound good. They always sound like toys or early 2000 VSTs. With Live there's just 3 synths, but they seem much more polished. And there's lots of FX available, not just 2 send FX. I'll wait with decision until Live Mk2 and/or MPC Software 3 comes out (and there's no apocalypse, of course...). Maybe until then Deluge's wavetable engine gets released?

@@Artek604 The deluge syth engines are very powrful and flexible with MANY routing possibilities. Not only is it virtual analog and FM, but there's also ring-mod synthesis and you can process live input through the effects, lfo's, sidechain-- almost anything you can do with the internal synths- and you can record it directly. the deluge IS for all intents and purposes a self-contained daw with a looper to boot.

Artur Godlewski Regarding their synths specifically, I think they both have something to offer and they are both impressive for standalone devices. I would say that in terms of stock presets and patches, I’m more impressed with the Deluge’s than with MPC’s. This matters to me mostly because deep diving into sound design while I’m in the middle of generating a song idea can negatively impede my workflow. I like to find a sound that’s close for the time being then polish the sound design at a later time. With that, the Deluge has more usable stock sounds than the MPC. On the MPC, I found myself spending more time searching for something that was usable. When it comes to sound design, they both have pros and cons. I think the Deluge has more matrix routing options. The Fm synth engine is a powerful feature. But the workflow buzz kill comes when I start trying to perfect the sound and working with the interface. And I sometimes struggle trying to get get to a sound that’s in my head. In this regard, the MPC is the opposite. The interface is great, so are the sound design options. Are the synth engines better? I think that’s subjective. I think both companies have interesting things in development that are worth watching for.

good intro vid ( though you sound a bit... bored? ; - ) It's still new-ish. and very under-publicized, as you say. ( see more vids on my channel ; - D the makers are REALLY involved in improving the machine with frequent updates, and do dialogue with the users on forums, VERY impressive vs. most large companies. Battery life is quite long (because no screen to light), so as long as it's regularly USB charged, things tend to be fine. Sometimes I miss having a Screen, though the LCDs do great as a touchable piano roll.
