St Mary’s Collegiate Church is a large Anglican church in Youghal, County Cork, Ireland. This church is not only the largest and most important medieval building in the town, but also the oldest church in Ireland still in continuous use. It has been a place of Christian worship for over 1,300 years. It is also a national monument of Ireland and a tourist attraction like no other.
St Mary’s Collegiate Church was built in 1220 by Meiler de Bermingham, who also founded the Dominican Priory in Youghal. The church was originally a simple cruciform structure, but it was enlarged and embellished over the centuries. It has a 13th century oak roof structure, a 14th century tower, a 15th century nave, a 16th century chancel, and a 17th century transept. It also has a 19th century spire, which replaced an earlier one that was destroyed by lightning.
Some of the notable features of the church include:
The 13th century oak roof structure, which is one of the oldest and finest in Ireland
The 15th century choir stalls, which are carved with intricate designs and symbols
The 16th century tomb of Richard Boyle, the first Earl of Cork, and his family, which is the largest and most elaborate in the church
The 17th century alabaster monument of Sir Walter Raleigh and his son, which is located in the south transept
The 18th century organ, which is the oldest working organ in Ireland.
The church witnessed many historic events and eras, such as the Norman invasion, the Reformation, the Cromwellian conquest, the Penal Laws, and the Irish Rebellion of 1798. The church survived fires, sieges, plundering, and vandalism, and remained a place of worship and refuge for the people of Youghal.
It also hosted many historic figures, such as Sir Walter Raleigh, who was the mayor of Youghal in 1588 and 1589, and Sir Richard Boyle, the first Earl of Cork, who was buried in the church in 1643. The church has many fascinating plaques and effigies, such as the Boyle Monument, the Raleigh Tomb, and the Power Tomb.
in the old wall of Youghal, you will see an EERILY coffin shaped niche. this was used during famine times to house coffins used to bury the poor and to reuse as needed. I go inside but I didn't stay long.

I don’t know why people think cemeteries are morbid. I find them peaceful and beautiful. I love reading people’s names and wondering about their lives. By doing so I feel we are someway keeping the dead from being forgotten.

I can't get over what a BEAUTIFUL, well-kept graveyard this is!! The bird song just adds to the tranquility of the place!! The recycled coffin is actually quite a practical and good idea, especially when dealing with multiple deaths in a sad time like the Great Famine!! I do find paupers' and mass graves VERY sad though!! My grandfather was buried in a pauper's grave, and I believe my great grandparents were too!! It's VERY sad!!💔😭🌹🌹 Thanks for sharing this GORGEOUS place with us, Sue!! You NEVER disappoint!! XXXX ❤👏👍💕💞💖🤗

Sue, another ~Tour de force~ adventure, the scenery from the hilly areas of the town below was just gorgeous also from behind the church and well kept gardens was 'chocolate box' perfect, I still can't believe how the grass is so green & lush, little wonder Ireland is called the Emerald Isle, I imagine you must have the most amazing dairy products, I'm thinking strawberries & clotted cream? while relaxing on a blanket in the 'Olde' church-yard 'lol', seriously tho this video had me transfixed all the way through, I was on the edge of my seat, Gr8 viewing & so very interesting the history as well, really beautiful & a credit to both you and GV...God Bless, keep safe👍👍

@@SerenitySueGraveyards Yes, mountain climbing gear like Crampons which attach your feet to the steep hills and mountaineering boots that provide traction and stability for traveling on rocky terrain. Trekking Poles would be necessary as they would aid your balance on uneven trails and improve your power and endurance when walking uphill.

The minute i put your channel on Sue its amazing how much greener brighter and beautiful Ireland is. My wife went to Ireland to her friends weeding 20 years ago before we got married, they went to Christian college together in TENN, they said seeing it on TV dont do it justice. She also mentioned the army is very strict, they wont allow people to take pictures of them, is it still that strict today.

No not at all, we don't even really see any of the army here, unless I was to go to the curragh army camy in Kildare, then they may not like it. As I say I don't see any army around. Even our guards (police) will be happy to get their picture taken

Rather than Robin, I think the name on that first stone was John. I know sometimes they are easier to make out in the video than in person. Magical place Sue! Thank you.

The church and graveyard are just totally awesome! The whole place is in great condition, very well cared for, except for a couple of crypts that need a little work. The story of the coffin shaped opening was very sad, but interesting. The 1632 headstone was very interesting. Thank you very much Sue and GV, this is one of your best videos. Have a great weekend. 😊

Such a beautiful cemetery and amazing to read the very old headstones. The niche in the wall is so sad, those poor souls who's days ended there. My family came to England because of the potato famine from county Mayo, and I am VERY proud of my Irish ancestry 🇮🇪

Very interesting to learn about the trap door coffin, and niche. I suppose it was an attempt at showing some respect for a body in a mass grave. The climb was worth it for that view. Well have to outfit you with some golf shoes next time😉.

The graveyard is beautiful! Especially that view! I had never heard of a coffin like that. The one used for the famine. We have something similar if a person is to be cremated but the family wants to receive friends first. I hope I too macabre or morbid Sue.
