The Sass Rigais is considered the main summit of the Geisler peaks in the Puez-Geisler National Park and, at 3025m, offers fantastic views.
Several paths lead to the summit, all of which include via ferrata sections. And although these parts are only moderately difficult, you should not underestimate the long unsecured climbing passages both on the ascent and descent. These are also all “only” in grade I, but the terrain is rocky, steep and the rocks are often brittle. This makes it a very challenging mountain tour.
However, the various paths are very well marked with red dots.
We start our tour in Santa Cristina with the Col Raiser gondola and then walk past the Regensburger hut to the Mittagsscharte. For the ascent, we choose the Villnöss ascent (B/C), for the descent the south-west route (B/C, but significantly fewer via ferrata sections). There is also the option of ascending or descending via the eastern flank, but we did not choose this due to the paths through loose scree.
On the descent, we didn't stress about catching the last gondola, but hiked the whole way back down to the valley.
Start: Col Raiser parking lot
Distance: 15.5 km
Altitude difference: 1080 up, 1590 down
Duration: 8 hours
Difficulty: very demanding mountain tour, both KS passages B/C & UIAA I, steep rocky terrain, lots of scrambling, very good stamina, surefootedness and a head for heights required
