Demo to compare the sound of the Prophet 8 and Rev2 playing the same patches. I used four patches from the factory presets for the Prophet 8 and three of my own patches:
1) Tom Sawyer
2) T8 Strings
3) Ice Planet
4) Analog Bliss
5) SOLON Arp
6) SOLON Swell
7) SOLON Homage to Synthmania
All patches were loaded up to the Rev2 via the Soundtower editor software.
I routed the MIDI from the Prophet 8 keyboard to the Rev2 and recorded the audio of both simultaneously so that the performances were exactly the same.
To hopefully make it intuitive to know which one is being listening to, the audio you are hearing is from the synth which is lit up - the other one is darkened.

Wow! I thought the synths were identical - except the built in effects, pwm on all waveforms and sub oscillators. It seems like they rounded out the much criticized "edge" of the Prophet 08. This might please the crowd, but takes away the character of the 08 that I've learned to love. I am confident that the Prophet 08 is a keeper now. Thank you!

An important thing to consider isn't just how the REV2 sounds playing the same patches as the P08, but what kinds of sounds the REV2 can uniquely produce. It is a different synth, built on the same basic architecture but with new effects and modulation capabilities that make a real difference to the sounds you can produce. That doesn't mean it's 'better,' just that there's more to the story than how it sounds playing some P08 patches.

@@furlong5439 well juno 106 is one of my favs and the chorus on it is worth its weight in gold. Go listen to currents by tame impala if you want to hear its capabilities. That being said, I have never bought one because they often need replacement parts and can be relatively unstable from what people tell me. If you've got money go for it. The 8 is more versatile by a long shot but far more in your face. Not bad, just different, and also no roland chorus. I went with the 8 just because I cant afford to have a bunch of vintage synths breaking down on me and there are vsts that do an amazing job at replicating them. Tal or diva for juno. my take was: despite being very similar, there are differences that are perceptible... which one is better is probably a matter of taste, but if you're considering upgrading from one to the other and need certain patches from the Prophet 8 to sound exactly the same, then be cautious... overall felt the P08 is slightly more raw/analogue/alive but somewhat unruly, whereas the Rev2 was more controlled/balanced and probably easier to fit into a mix... both are great!

Wouldn't the velocity curve of the Prophet '08 keyboard (it's not a Fatar) be different than the Fatar keyboard that the Rev2 desktop is presumably designed to interface with? When I had an '08 desktop, I noticed a dramatic difference on some patches whether I was using a Yamaha, Fatar or DSI Prophet '08 keyboard as a controller. It would affect filter settings quite noticeably, for example.

Tom: I played them both over a Yamaha S90-XS weighted keyboard when I made the comparison for myself (When I ordered the Rev2 and still had the 08 in the studio) and the difference in sound is obvious! I had made lots of own sounds in my 08 - transferred to the Rev2 they sounded flat and almost digital - just like samples from my 08! You are right in your point that different keyboards make the sounds behave different, but the Rev2 seems to be designed for value for money reasons - they changed something in the sound architecture! For example the panning of the voices is fixed now - why is that? It had a strong influence on the overall sound! I could not believe it in the first place because I hungered to get rid of the shitty keys of the 08 and really longed for the eight voices plus but the sound did not kept up to the original so I kept the 08!

Thanks so much for this video! However, despite having the same patch, there's vast differences like panning etc as mentioned. Could this be perhaps because of sound tower not "translating" the patches accurately? Perhaps manually checking that all parameters are the same might help? I've often faced issues with patches going wonky on dump/restore. My 08 started giving problems and went in for repair while I'd ordered the rev2. Bereft of either, I went in to a store and tried the rev2 and to my ears it sounded like "more" of what made the 08 awesome and lively. Once again, thanks for your time :)

I did migrate from the prophet 08 to the REV2/16, and after listening to this, the differences mostly feel to be due to just some very slight filter tweaking. Update from my comment a year before! I did it again! I gave the Rev 2 a second chance, because all the great sound sets that where released here on youtube in the last year or so made me curious if I judged to quick a year before - so I have to say I was wrong! The shock, that my beloved self-made sounds of the 08 sounded different in the rev 2 swayed my judge too much, I have to admit! After I gave the Rev 2 a fresh start with a bunch of sound sets I bought, I'm completely in love with the Rev 2 - it's such a well build, great sounding analog Synth! Even my older sounds from the 08 shine in a new glance after tweaking them with a bit more understanding of the Rev 2! So if anybody experiences the same with his 08 sounds - give it some time! It's sounding different, but not worse, and the better build quality, 16 voices and a lot more possibilities make the Rev 2 a great analog Synth, not only for the money!

Interesting video. Solon swell sounds much nicer on the 08, possibly due to seeming like it has a chorus or some type of stereo enhancement effect? That's odd as obviously the 08 doesn't have any effects. Is there some trick with the programming being used in that patch? Or is it just osc panning? Also, I think it's possible that the differences we're hearing between the two are down to the fact that the calibration of the rev 2 compared to the 08 is never going to be a 1-1 exact copy, also I'm sure that there would be some tiny circuit changes. If that's the case, then simply loading in the patches wouldn't be an accurate representation of how these two compare. The only other option is to manually tweak the synths in order to try and land exactly on the spot. I don't know, maybe you've tried this and can comment on whether the two match up even closer when tweaked slightly? Thanks
@solon_music
@solon_music 6 жыл бұрын
Agree that Solon swell sounds much better on the 08 - there's no chorus on it - the parameter settings are all exactly the same - the explanation I think is that a value of X pan spread on the 08 does not create the same effect as on the Rev2 - I'm pretty sure you could boost the pan spread on the Rev2 to make it more similar to the 08 - but there's also something a bit more raw about the 08 which comes out on that patch. The aim of the video was to help Prophet 08 owners understand whether patches from their Prophet 08s would sound the same on the Rev2 if they just loaded up the same settings on the Rev2... working out whether patches could be made to sound the same by manually tweaking the Rev2 is a separate question and challenge!

As a Prophet '08 owner, I listened with great curiosity. My take, is there was more sonic weight to the Rev2. As another comment pointed out, especially in the lower frequencies. The '08 seemed richer and warmer though. The filter sounds juicier to my ears. While I agree partially with the earlier comment that filter settings could be tweaked to make the two synths closer, I believe the difference is greater than that. I would bet some of the difference has to due with the Rev2 running through the effects board (even if the effects are off) after leaving the VCAs. Just my 2 cents...
@solon_music
@solon_music 6 жыл бұрын
Agree the filter difference is more than just the settings - the filters feel like they have a different overall quality - the Rev 2 slightly smoother, the Prophet 8 slightly sharper / aggressive / raw - neither better or worse - just different and either one might work better for a given purpose.

Sometimes the rev sounds more snappy - sometimes the original sounds more punchy and the rev 2 sounds softer or darker with less high end fizz. I'm sure with some minor tweaks they could be made even more similar. I'd take a rev 2 over the original I sold for ease of modulation and built in effects, waveshaping, double the voices and a nicer screen. It's a nice improvement. The main disappointment I have is the lack of a live panel editing mode - it would be so easy and cheap to implement too.

I have been listening your good video on great monitors (PSI AUDIO + Focals). There is, most of the times, a HUGE différence between the two bad boys right here. REV 2 is smoother, more natural, a little beat warmer and clearer on some of the mid fréquencies, prophet 8 is a bit more "Kicking in the door" and the saturation is really coming forward on the attack of the sounds, while the saturation on the Rev 2 is a bit "moving" making the sound "A live". This is my 2 cents.

great comparison. I don't think there's enough difference to matter for my purposes. I wish there could somehow be such a comparison for the Rev2 vs the Novation Summit. I have a feeling most of the time I would pick out and prefer the rev2. The problem with the Rev2 is the bitimbral control stuff is crap, won't respond to pitchbend and modwheel on two channels no real HPF, always sends midi volume on base midi channel only from the volume knob, and you can't disable that or put it on secondary midi channel. This list of problems goes on, but those are at the top. The Rev2 has been out so long already idk if they can or will address those, but I'm going to ask them to.

I don’t get why people keep saying prophet ‘08. Rev2 is superior in every way. It depends really on people’s preference. Rev2 is slightly more richer and cuts through the mix a lot better but all depends on how the filter envelopes etc. on both are used. If you’re processing through pedals and on board processing via your daw then opt for the rev2.

@@themusicalsynthesizer8311 I listened again with headphones and found out why the Prophet 8 is sounding more 'organic': in some sounds, the voices are panned across the stereo panorama, while the REV2 voices are located in the middle: T8 Strings, Solon Swell, Homage to Synthmania. So: the wider sounds of the Prophet 8 tricked my ears and gave me the impression of being more warm and organic. I own a REV2. And I have to say, that it does not excel plug-ins like Ominsphere and Diva concerning analogue sounds.

"Bitimbral Synth Controllergate": I'm having an upset about the fact that Sequential never publicly disclosed that the Rev2 is NOT completely 'two synths in one' (neither did Novation about the Summit). Because the two layers can NOT independently respond to pitchbend and related types of control messages, locally or by MIDI in. You might think 'no big deal'...but then, would you buy a synth that didn't have pitchbend? To be clear they can do pitchbend, just not on both 'layers' or 'parts' (not both synths) at once. So there's no way that is really 'bitimbral' or 'two synths in one' without one of these>>> * . They have committed an ethical indiscretion by not putting in an asterisk with this info. I've had one contact with them so far but there was not a good attitude about this fact. I'm in the process of deciding how to handle this and if they are not going to inform the public I may drop a comment on a bunch of key sites. I may return the Rev2 I just bought over this. I may have bought something else instead. Strikingly, the Novation Summit has the SAME or SIMILAR issue! I had contact with their USA rep and his was MUCH more concerned about it and it was a better experience than with Sequential. These companies need to be called about about this behavior, unless you think it's just fine and cool to leave this info out EVERYWHERE, in all marketing materials and public info AND left out of the manuals. So, ok to not tell us your synth can't do pitchbend?
@jimmygray3452
@jimmygray3452 4 жыл бұрын
In multi mode, do the two separate layers on the Rev2 only respond to basic MIDI CCs, like note on/off, filter, etc? Or are you claiming it's even worse than that? If it's the former, I don't imagine it'd be hard for them to fix that with firmware.
@eltouristoduo
@eltouristoduo 4 жыл бұрын
@@jimmygray3452 they've had three years. The Problem is that pitchbend, modwheel, and aftertouch can't be simultaneously independent in any regard in real time between the two layers. And there is no way to switch the control. It always mergers to both layers. Whatever the response programmed into each layer for those controllers, is how they will both respond any time those controls are used either locally or coming into the synth on either channel from an external source. So if you want to stop unwanted controller response for a layer you have to edit it's program to nullify that response. The CC's seem to be independent if I remember my testing. But that in no way a workable substitution for pitchbend, it's a unique bipolar controller. And it's not for the other two either, since those controllers are well, often, primary controllers from a patch creation point of view. It's just a huge and inexplicable incompletion that that primary controllers are not independent. And the owners manual couldn't be much more clear with it's false claim that those controllers are independent.
@iaingraham7276

eltouristoduo you are completely incorrect, both layers can respond independently via midi. Obviously they can’t respond independently from the built in keyboard and wheels.
@eltouristoduo
@eltouristoduo 4 жыл бұрын
@@iaingraham7276 Im NOT completely incorrect. My comment explained. Maybe you just didn't read it. The two layers DO respond to midi note on/off independently, but NOT pitchbend, NOT modwheel, NOT aftertouch. The owner manual says they DO. It LIES. This is NOT true or full multitymbral. Repeat, you literally can NOT pitchbend the two layers independently.

Yikes , I was very hyped for the rev2 because of its expanded functionality but for some reason the prophet 8 just sounds better , and clearly is different regardless if DSI marketing says they’re replicas , because they’re absolutely not . Even if you upload the same sounds to the rev2 , they do NOT sound the same . For me , I almost feel stuck between a rock and a hard place .. the raw sounds of the oscillators and filter in the prophet 8 are nicer and the rev2 is 85% there . But the extra features gives it that boost ... but the basic raw sounds from the osc and filter really make those feautures not so nice for me .... it’s like comparing a moog sub 37 to a model D .. I would kill for the raw sounds of the model D with sub 37 features ... guess we really can’t have our cake and eat it too
