Keir Starmer is Britain's new prime minister after the Labour Party won a landslide in Thursday's election, ending 14 years of Conservative rule. Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who was reelected as an independent, says the party now needs to offer meaningful change to the public, including on demanding a ceasefire in Gaza. "Whilst Labour has this huge parliamentary majority, their national share of the vote was only around a third of all votes cast. It's a very low mandate," says Corbyn.

In fairness, from a perspective of the Left, it was pretty good - Greens got all the seats they were after and came second in 40 more - they might finally break the glass ceiling on becoming a serious party in an FPTP system. Indy candidates won a few seats, sending a message to Labour that they can't ignore Gaza or left principles, they also caused Tories to get into a few seats simply because the people barred from Labour went on as Independents and split the vote pretty neatly in half. Its worth pointing out that in all these seats, the spiteful labour right, who are controlling the mechanisms of the party right now, put a *lot* of effort into those seats in a mean=spirited attempt to crush left resistance, they failed. A bigger concern is whether they can be gently steered to be more left wing and concillatory rather than competitive in the *next* election - if not, there is a worrying chance Reform could clean up more votes, as they came second in a lot of seats in England.

He then established himself in Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany, which he collaborated with during World War II against Britain, requesting during a meeting with Adolf Hitler backing for Arab independence and opposition to the establishment of a Jewish national home in Palestine.[14] Upon the end of the war, he came under French protection, and then sought refuge in Cairo. In the lead-up to the 1948 Palestine war, Husseini opposed both the 1947 UN Partition Plan and Jordan's plan to annex the West Bank. Failing to gain command of the Arab League's Arab Liberation Army, Husseini built his own militia, the Holy War Army. In September 1948 he participated in the establishment of an All-Palestine Government in Egyptian-ruled Gaza, but this government won limited recognition and was eventually dissolved by Egypt in 1959. After the war and the 1948 Palestinian expulsion and flight, his claims to leadership were discredited and he was eventually sidelined by the establishment of the Palestine Liberation Organization in 1964.[15] He died in Beirut, Lebanon, in July 1974."

Jeremy Corbyn. ❤✊ The best Prime Minister we never had. An honest, principled man who stood for the many, and terrified the establishment, so they made sure he never stood a chance in the 2019 elections after he came so close to winning in '15. Also, he lost in '19 with more votes than Starmer just won with, and Starmer now has a massive majority in parliament; gotta love the antiquated first past the post system! 🙄

The Guardian, Monday 8 July 2024: 'Voter ID rule may have stopped 400,000 taking part in UK election, poll suggests'. There is also the issue of postal ballot delays reported for 90 constituencies. The results of these issues demand fresh recounts for those either unable to vote due to Photo Voter ID and those whose postal votes were delayed.
@EmmaVB82
@EmmaVB82 16 күн бұрын
This makes me very angry, as a UK postal voter 😠 Thankfully I got my postal vote super early (then didn’t post it in time 🤦🏻‍♀️ and instead took it to my polling station on Thur… the freedom of an extended time window for postal voting is the main reason I’ve registered for one, because executive dysfunction and neurodivergence!), but I’ve always been fundamentally against mandatory voter ID because it disproportionally impacts the people who are typically more disadvantaged and more likely to vote for left parties!
@safirahmed
@safirahmed 16 күн бұрын
@@EmmaVB82 Indeed, Tories have also changed postal votes returns process and those handing in postal votes to ensure the votes are received before 10pm (22:00) on polling day are now required to complete a form explaining why the postal vote is being delivered in person to a polling station and that votes don't count if the votes are put into the letterbox of council offices.

Would be great for Corbyn to build community and solidarity with some of the socialist groups in the UK. His considerable weight and fame could really boost the signal of leftist groups and build an actual Worker’s movement. Jeremy mentioned here that the left needs to come together; as one of the most prominent leftists in the UK he can be that catalyst with either a new party, or by leveraging existing groups and platforms like TUSC
