www.democracynow.org - The website Gawker has published the suicide note of an Iraq War veteran who says he took his own life because the trauma of war left him in constant mental and physical agony. Daniel Somers had been diagnosed with traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other conditions related to the war. He ran hundreds of combat missions as a machine gunner and carried out interrogations as part of an intelligence team in Baghdad. Later, he worked with Joint Special Operations Command as a senior analyst in Mosul. In a letter first quoted by the Phoenix New Times and written to his family before he killed himself just two weeks ago, Daniel Somers wrote: "During my first deployment, I was made to participate in things, the enormity of which is hard to describe. War crimes, crimes against humanity. Though I did not participate willingly, and made what I thought was my best effort to stop these events, there are some things that a person simply can not come back from. I take some pride in that, actually, as to move on in life after being part of such a thing would be the mark of a sociopath in my mind. These things go far beyond what most are even aware of. To force me to do these things and then participate in the ensuing coverup is more than any government has the right to demand. Then, the same government has turned around and abandoned me." He went on to write, "Any blame rests with them." Somers killed himself on June 10. He was 30 years old.

Fact is all US presidents who have taken office in US are related. A certain royal bloodline has always been in charge. Therefore US is not a democracy. It has always had fake elections giving people an illusion of choice but in fact the same royal family has been in charge since it's founding. And let's not forget how many people have died being invaded by the US. War crimes are also a factor that people tend to ignore like the highway bombing by US military in Iraq and many other war crimes in the various countries they have invaded. Even the ICC has asked the US to attend the Hague over war crimes and the US leadership simply refuses to go.

Jay Hobgood, it is easy to say now but when the bad guy made his move you just sit and watch?, vn is not a mistake, it similar to Korea and the us saved a nation, the us owned their support world wide like no other nation on earth for this reason, ww2, pacific, two of its babies are Japan and South Korea, it was nearly suceed south vn, because vn borders with Laos and Cambodia it harder to manage when enemy infiltrated from outside vn via border, if vn like Korea just a big land mark sticking out to the sea it would still a democratic nation now, millions of Vietnamese died with the 50.000 US serviceman tried to save what vn become now a pice of rubbish to what it suppose to be like Japan,Singapore, Korea. It look no matter now?, not really those spin off have momentum in support American internationally, when you have nations saved and million owned their debt to you forever and those admiring what you did but they didn't have the ability to do. My dad a fail Vietnamese solider we lost the war but we always thankful for that the us tried and fail, deep down, millions of vnese have special place in their heart for the US and allies for what they sacrificed many thousands of their young lives to save us, human can bond generations pass down to their kids(me), that is how we struggle to win evils in this world, it seems meaningless but believe me it will never ever forgotten. For the fail Vietnamese the war never end until vn de On my way! Democratic again, it just a different generation taking it on, hw much you love ur country that is how we love south vn, you can't remember because you were born yet but you learn from elders their values, their love and pain of our ppl pass and present only that love can sustain the existence and improve better lives for its citizens.

Before he died aged 111, Harry Patch was the last man to see action in the trenches of WW1, he was badly wounded in the notorious Battle of Passchendaele by an exploding shell that killed his 3 comrades in the machine gun crew he was part off. Anyway he was worth listening to and declared "War is the calculated and condoned murder of human beings" and that "If the leaders did the the fighting there would be no wars" if anyone thinks militarism is good its worth listening to him & his comrades.

I lost my younger brother, a Army grunt who served in Afghanistan, to suicide January 26th, 2015. He had not even been out of the Army a year. I am also married to a Marine Corps Veteran, who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, who has struggled with suicidal thoughts and alcoholism. They had both called themselves MURDERERS because of what they saw and did while deployed. The United States government has used our military since 9/11 to do the dirty work for them. And then once they're home they completely abandon them. Veterans of our country deserve so much more than what they're barely getting. My husband told me that the American people have NO FUCKING IDEA what we were actually doing over there in the first place. Military members guarding Poppy fields (which why would that be important except for Heroin) , kill anyone and everyone. Search and destroy these mostly innocent Iraqi's and Afghanistan's, who live in poverty. While watching their fellow brothers and sisters in arms die for NO REASON. Our government has been exploiting our armed services for far to long. It makes me sick to my stomach, especially when none of them get the help they not only NEED, BUT DESERVE!

As soon as he closes his eyes, the nightmares begin & he is jumping up out of bed to make it stop. He naps an hour hear or there & that is it all day every day it's a struggle for him to close his eyes & attempt sleep. This has been going on for decades & no one wants to open their eyes to see what the govt. has done. He had no choice either (drafted).

Here is the full letter The simple truth is this: During my first deployment, I was made to participate in things, the enormity of which is hard to describe. War crimes, crimes against humanity. Though I did not participate willingly, and made what I thought was my best effort to stop these events, there are some things that a person simply can not come back from.... To force me to do these things and then participate in the ensuing coverup is more than any government has the right to demand. Then, the same government has turned around and abandoned me.... Is it any wonder then that the latest figures show 22 veterans killing themselves each day? That is more veterans than children killed at Sandy Hook, every single day.... And for what? Bush's religious lunacy? Cheney's ever growing fortune and that of his corporate friends? Is this what we destroy lives for?... The fact is that any kind of ordinary life is an insult to those who died at my hand. How can I possibly go around like everyone else while the widows and orphans I created continue to struggle? If they could see me sitting here in suburbia, in my comfortable home working on some music project they would be outraged, and rightfully so.... [N]ow I am free. I feel no more pain. I have no more nightmares or flashbacks or hallucinations. I am no longer constantly depressed or afraid or worried. I am free

I have a measure of respect for this man. While I am totally against the Iraq War and every American soldier who participates in it, this man is a man of conscience. A man who knew what he was doing was wrong, very wrong. Unlike a lot of others in his situation who seek to justify the war in their mind in a selfish attempt to get on with their lives and the atrocities they've committed, this man's conscience wouldn't allow him to do that. If he had come home and spoken out against the war I would have also respected him.

Honor my friend. Helping others die...others who have been grossly burned...dying of unknown diseases...missing major body parts. Many cannot do this type of work on a daily basis but someone must do it or many would be abandoned while suffering. I held back the tears until getting into bed and then...nightmares...sleepwalking...fear...I even broke my neck while sleepwalking and falling down stairs onto a concrete floor. PTSD comes in many forms and the results from wars deliver traumatic stress in many forms. No sleep, afraid to fall asleep and go back into the horror of pain, screaming, and bleeding. It is not a normal everyday job to help others, young others, die every day. Death becomes normal, like breathing or feeling your heartbeat. Did this daily, for years. It left me moody, resentful and sleep-deprived. Had to reach the point of exhaustion every third or fourth day and pass out. Or drink to a mellow stupor and pass out. Took sleeping pills but they only had the desired effect for a week or so and I'm back into the same stupid routine. Lack of sleep and sick thoughts made me hard to associate with and felt as if I was losing my mind. This went on for many years, ruined my ambitions and had very few friends who understood me. It got worse as I aged and I had no friends, constant pain from my fx neck, and sick thoughts. By the time I reached 65 I was a basket case...mean...unfriendly...hated myself and could not maintain a job. Now, at 68, I'm worse than ever. The Vet. Adm. raters say I'm fine and they may take my disability pay. If so, I'll be homeless and a burden to society. I,m very familiar with death. 400mg MS tonight and I will burden nobody. God Bless, please pray for my immortal Soul. I have strong Faith in Jesus. ...though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil...I will reach out and feel the Hand of Christ pulling me into Peace and Heaven. Bye.

I can empathize. I served in a war among the worst of humanity surrounded by absolute hero’s that was my platoon. Only to get retired, receive shit care by the VA and then have my pension cut in half based on an error that the VA caused. It’s called a CUE (clear and unmistakable error) and I’ve been fighting it for 3 years now and have all the proof in the world. It falls on deaf ears. My pension was cut due to Nothing I did. It’s as if I’m paying THEM for going to war and being subjected to an inarticulate amount of grief and war. I gave this country everything I had only to be fucked by the government Bureaucrats who couldn’t care less about a 100% service connected and retired serviceman. I have seen the police tape so many times at my VA’s parking deck and I know exactly why it was up. Because a brother in arms had been fucked one too many times. Rest easy, hero. It’s not your fault. It’s the disgusting Government’s. If Arlington would allow it, which is By the grace of God, where my final stop will be would let me put “fuck you” on my headstone then I’d do it.

We vets of any war that suffer with depression get the same answer when we ask for help . People claiming to be trained mental health professionals ! most are frightened &impotent in their own lives feeding off the respect of their patients or worse with sadistic desire to crush patients spirits that's what killed my little friend who'd returned from Iraq and called the Veterans Crisis Hotline twice she was disconnected then shot herself in the head . that they don't want to hear about . I pity them when they answer to God what they did in the name of "Crisis coordinating "

Veterans dont kill themselves to hurt anyone but to save themselves the constant and unbearable emotional pain of living their lives in such a condition. emotional trauma is something that you dont wanna deal with, trust me we are all proud to have served with honor and courage and when everything is said and done, you go home by yourself, sometimes when a vet commit suicide, hes thinking that he is doing his/her family a favor, cz what good are you if you only bring pain and suffering to the people you love? taking yourself out of the equation can be trhe best option, veterans are not cowards for taking their lives,i hate the phrase thank you for your service bulshit and realistically i volunteered to join so i shouldnt be mad, i look physically ok i just hate my brains cz its not a good neighberhood for me,it sucks

I did not mean offence, I understand that they often have PTSD, and problems readjusting to life at home and it is for the very reasons that this man committed suicide. They have seen and often been involved in very traumatic situations. People who report on what can go on like Bradley Manning face the death penalty and meanwhile where I live in the UK, when soldiers come home the media and most of the public is incredibly thankful for their service. The truth is they get mixed messages.

Very sad, my friends are of the Viet Nam era and experienced having to commit the same sort of atrocities, only they came back and protesters were blaming the soldiers. Some are still wandering the streets, homeless, haunted by the visions of that war. Sadly and, it may seem sick, but I wish he had told exactly what it was he was made to do. So the rest of can protest the government for doing such ugly and illegal things. And no, you don't get a choice once you're in there.

Must've totally sucked to be in this guy's shoes. But on the plus note, stories such as his are crucial in dissuading public interests in allowing another Iraq War to happen. I mean, just look how unpopular the idea of attacking/invading Iran and Venezuela has already become. People are just simply fed up with all bs lies and shit and are no longer tolerating it. They KNOW exactly why their government wants to start these unjustified wars and they're most definitely not for good causes.

It’s worse when no one will hire you too. Been unemployed since day one of getting out back in 2011. People only say they want to help, but no one really does. People only want to say they help veterans because it makes them feel better. I’m 41 and live with my parents with my 3 kids. People have all the answers, but answers don’t help. Got to love their pretty fliers. Every flier I get might help someone else, but I never meet their qualifications lol. I was told about the Virginia Transportation having a program for disabled vets...............as long as you have only been out of service for a max 3 yrs lol. Not eligible is all I hear.

I think these veterans that go to war should get some kind of compensation more than a pay check or at least a small pension even if they don’t decide to do 25 years and retire. Only someone brave and courageous would risk their life to fight for our freedom not everyone can do that.

Very sad to see how he was used by the government as a pawn to commit war crimes he never intended to. Just shows the dirty tactics and the fact he had a conscience which is what killed him. He is paying for his sins but the sins also lie with the higher powers in office who are so far removed. God is the most just and will deal with these war mongerers. When the day comes.

The thing is the % of how many war crimes done by US during that war is high…so many soldiers speak out but are muzzled and are seen as crazy or insane so nobody takes them seriously but if they are insane then that makes everyone on earth also insane…because the interviews that were done shows them of being of sound mind and everything…insane how people don’t know about them who speak out
