As the United States heads into the Martin Luther King Day holiday weekend, attempts by Democrats to pass major new voting rights legislation appear to have stalled. We examine the new award-winning documentary “Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America,” which follows civil rights attorney Jeffery Robinson as he confronts the enduring legacy of anti-Black racism in the United States, weaving together examples from the U.S. Constitution, education system and policing. “The entire purpose of this film is to ask people to take a long hard look at our actual history of white supremacy and anti-Black racism,” says Robinson, the former deputy legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union. “That is something that has been really erased from the common narrative and creation story about America.” We also speak with Emily Kunstler and Sarah Kunstler, the directors of the film.

Took my 16 yr old son to the theater, on a Saturday night, to see a documentary...he protested initially, but left blown away, as I. I’m a 51 yr old man, whose family is from Charleston SC, who graduated from an HBCU and have been studying the subject for 25 years...and yet, Who We Are was a complete two hour education. Excellent work, to say the least.

"Whenever the government provides opportunities in privileges for rich people and white people they call it “subsidized” when they do it for poor people and negroes they call it “welfare.” The fact is that everybody in this country lives on welfare. Suburbia was built with federally subsidized credit. And highways that take our white brothers out to the suburbs were built with federally subsidized money to the tune of 90 percent. Everybody is on welfare in this country. The problem is that we all to often have socialism for the rich and rugged free enterprise capitalism for the poor. That’s the problem." -Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Great quote! But another way to look at this is the word "investment". The government invested in 'infastructure', and this benefitted a large amount of the population. The issue in recent times has been tax cuts and other benefits to the wealthy has been framed as 'investments'. However they have the option to investment in foreign projects, and such things a labor to increase their profits. Whereas investments from the community level circulate from the bottom up. And the top still benefit through investments in general. So in other words 'welfare' is really an investment that benefits everyone. But coming from the top, they paint it as something negative, because they want it mostly for themselves. And also things like racism are thrown in, to divide the working classes.

Dr. King's words there were not disingenuous, unless that's what you want to be. They were provocative and revolutionary. You're not wrong another first point, but what will it take for you to be right about it instead? Holding a grievance about perceived past wrongs that can never be made right makes you no better than the average Republican today. Natives Americans weren't locked off lands, their ancestors were. These things are related but they're not the same thing. Remember that you are brothers in arms with all the oppressed and repressed people's of the country and the world. What is it that can or should be done for them? Taking away what is today someone else's land to give it back to you won't make up for the past's injustice, it would only create more injustice; and simply acknowledging the past's injustice won't right today's injustices. Be constructive, get creative about what it would take to truly bring justice, repair the damage and heal the wounds and move all of us together into the future and forward. Can subsidies buy your freedom, dispose ancestral grievance, and dispell injustice? Maybe it can help with these things, but understand that retribution can't be bought with money, and nor would retribution absolve the past's woeful mistakes anyway. I'm 15% native American of a people and tribe that no longer exist, they are within me, and I am them, but they are gone. There's no bringing them back or making that 100% whole except for accepting where and what I am today and seeking and creating the future, not focusing on a past that no longer exists. We won't get anywhere by telling every non Native American that they don't belong here, or telling African Americans that THE most prominent African American leader was disingenuous when YOU misunderstood the point. YOU need to look within yourself and find your true cause and no longer internalize the defeated and subjugated fate of Native American ancestors, YOU can begin to liberate your mind NOW for the people that will call you their ancestors. Abandon the hope of the past, you are needed here and now to create the future. Or not, whatever, you can hold onto your grievances and deny wisdom and be "right" about 300 million Americans needing to leave. One of these is a story youve been told and keep telling yourself as ot gets you no where, the other is an emancipating emergent future that involves you. The choice is yours.

A better world should be the goal of every decent and 'principled' human being. Without principles to live by, we are doomed. Half the country has been misdirected as to what the real issues are for decades maybe even hundreds of years. Their ancestors + the Republican party have stoked their confused view of the nation in order to weaponize them. They created the issue of being run over while protesting (a constitutionally protected right) at the hands of confused and weaponized individuals using their cars as weapons, and when that's not the case, it's their actual weapons of war that they own to decimate deer and shoot randomly at the large properties handed down to them via the Homestead Act. The republican party is radicalizing their base, knowingly, these confused masses think that the very people who are confusing and distorting their humanity are their 'caretakers' and people 'like them', when in fact they've been manipulated by them for decades. Republicans' preferred method of continuing their unchecked wealth and power accumulation has always been inciting civil war.

There are good moral people like Jeffery Robinson and the two filmmakers and I believe in them with all my heart but there are more that are actively abhorrent or who say and do nothing, choosing to ignore what’s going on before their eyes. “I didn’t do anything wrong, I didn’t know what was happening ”, so said the Germans after the war. It’s our responsibility to try to find out. Everyone throws the word existentialism around all the time, it’s ridiculous. Humankind is basic Sartre and Camus, people who choose not to have a moral compass and so ‘the choices we make make define us.’ But there are moments in time when we have the opportunity to wake up and do the right thing. This is a big glaring moment. I hope hope with all my heart we listen to people like Robinson and act.

I would love to see those who were a part of this film get involved with the Minnesota Teen Activists in St.Paul, MN, who are walking out all across their school district today. They are the future of America & are being trolled so ugly I feel shamed from a neighboring state! I won an essay contest when I was in junior high in MN -- the President's Bicentennial Essay Contest, about why each contest entrant was proud to be an American. My essay is buried in a time capsule under the White House, and is supposed to be opened on our Tricentennial. The thing is, I was lied to about "who we are". America broke my heart to pieces, for the mythology fed us under the facade of American History was my THING coming up. Today, the MN Teen Activists gave me hope again, but most days I drop a tear, or fifty, for the figment of imagination I once believed was really who we are, and each of those days I mourn wishing I could take my essay back. Jerome Treadwell of Highland Park Sr High, and Angela Nguyen of Harding High, teen leaders in St. Paul, MN, have done more for America already than most people living in this country have done by their 80s. They deserve the mentorship of Jeffrey Robinson & filmmakers, as well as that of Democracy Now -- if there is to be on this soil, an inclusive democracy ever.

I believe that it is not so much about the existence of God, and more about living by uplifting principles. Some groups of people, say they believe in God. But their focus, seems to be on end of times Revelations. With this, to seem to be delighted by negative events, believing it is signalling Christ's return. But meanwhile the words of Jesus, among other things, should teach us the ways to the Kingdom of Heaven on our own. But primary example of this, is the principle of Forgivingness. So many people carry around other's negative energies, without understanding that Forgivingness is freedom.

I always want to be open minded because as someone who is more conservative, I've been called a lot of names-racist, bigot, homophobe--none of which are true. I wanted to approach this film with an open heart and an open mind and I'm always willing to hear the truth, especially when it is backed by documented historic facts. I am inclined to agree with most of the points made in this film especially when backed up by historic documents with direct quotes from their source. I even agree that the Star-Spangled Banner, may not have been the most appropriate choice of national anthems. If I'd been asked, I would have chosen America the Beautiful which I believe was written during WWII. There are a couple of sticking points I had with the information and logic used. The three women who funded BLM were supposed to raise and distribute funds to chapters across the nation--the misappropriated those funds to their own benefit. My next sticking point was the professor's defense of those individual black men who recently died at the hands of a police officers. In just about every case, each of those individuals were breaking the law and refused to comply with the officer's requests. While no one deserves to die under those circumstances, if each if those individuals had complied with the police requests, they might be alive today. I would hope that if I were breaking the law and the police approached me that if I complied, I would go to jail, get my lawyer involved and let them sort it out. The public was never allowed to see the body cam footage in its entirety. I do agree that we have to be able to have conversations and debates. I do believe as a nation we are moving forward--perhaps not as quickly as we should, but I believe we are. As far as the confederate flag is concerned, I don't buy into it being about it being a symbol of the south as anything other than a symbol of bigotry. I want to tell anyone flying it, "You lost, get over it." And finally, I disagree with thoughts expressed regarding "white privilege". I grew up extremely poor and white and I can say in all honesty that people gave me the same kinds of looks that they gave people of color. Poor is poor. I've had security follow me in department stores. I've had the police hassle me for "loitering" because I sat down on the curb in front of a store on a hot day to catch my breath. I was poor and I looked it. So, I don't think you can make a blanket statement like that because it doesn't fit everyone.

People like myself will often 'bend over backwards" to please rather than annoy or (Anger) those around us, even while being subjected to abuse. As a 'middle' class to 'poor' European, I still cannot grasp why a house (the senate) can block legislation for it seems eternity. If my understanding is right the senate is created to oversee that doesn't 'rape' the constitution. And that was it - THEN. Now the 'senate' seems to have more power then the house. If they would followed the UK system to make the senate like the 'house of lords' now In 1911, in the British Parliament deprived the House of Lords of its absolute power of veto on legislation. The act was proposed by a Liberal majority in the House of Commons. Not so still in that 'golden' Union called the USA. If that was to happen (it won't, but one can have a dream), and the senate was rolled back in its original purpose, a lot of laws would have been passed, especially those on racial discrimination. What I always thought was very wrong in the USA, was the enormous amount of money spending to elect a short term 'medieval king' - called 'president' with extreme powers (medieval I said, it's actually worse). Your country is not very well like all over the world, even among so called 'allies', except those with little or no democracy and 'bearing gifts' - sorry to be cynical. (oil, mineral rights etc.) - 1-5% of Americans own 95% + of your assets. Do you really think, as long as the 'senate' and a short lived very powerful 'king' are in power ANYTHING will change for the people ? Especially the denigrated, 1911, in the British Parliament which deprived the House of Lords of its absolute power of veto on legislation. The act was proposed by a Liberal majority in the House of Commons. But this seems impossible in the US. How many years were there without a 'war' since the US' inception ? Ask that to the average student, who can't even point out a state in his/her country. And let's hope they don't fall over, because medical care costs are the highest in the world. And yet you call this the 'land of the free and the willing'. I wrote this in fifteen minutes, I hope I'll get a response, and I cannot promise i will be courteous to them if they come up with the usual nonsense.
