"Where Olive Trees Weep": Dr. Gabor Maté & Ashira Darwish on New Film Exploring Trauma in Palestine

A new documentary, Where Olive Trees Weep, explores Palestinian loss, trauma and the fight for justice over decades of life under Israeli occupation. We speak with two people featured in the film: Ashira Darwish, a Palestinian journalist and therapist, and Dr. Gabor Maté, an acclaimed Hungarian Canadian physician whose work focuses on addiction and trauma.
"I was only 16 when I was taken," says Darwish, describing the first time she was beaten and arrested by Israeli soldiers, which motivated her to become a journalist in order to both document and fight against the occupation. "What's happening in Palestine is devastating, and what's happening in the West Bank and Gaza has been going on for 75 years."
Maté, a Holocaust survivor born in Hungary, recounts his own trauma as a child and says "that same horror" is being inflicted on Palestinian children today.

Easy to say "I'm against killing babies" isn't it. Brave stance. I've just watched this documentary made in 2022 and it's a phenomenal, powerful piece of work. Really should be viewed by every human being on this earth to understand the brutalities of occupation and similarities with tactics/merciless severity employed by the Third Reich over their victims in captivity. It is mind-blowing that our governments over decades have enabled and supported such evil and illegalities. There should be screenings all over the world. Its got a range of Israeli commentators including the psychologist, Dr Gabor Mate. Please share widely and do watch with your families. Education is so important. Plus you'll be donating towards planting olive trees.

From 48 to 67, Gaza and West Bank belonged to Egypt and Jordan. Why are you counting those years as well? Obviously, the only reason we are talking about a Palestinian people is because of the Arab desire to not see a Jewish state in the Middle East. If Israel did not exist, there would be no talk of Palestine. The land would simply be divided between Egypt and Jordan. The Palestinians are probably some of the most radicalized people in the world. Not even their Muslim neighbours want anything to do with them and that in itself says a lot.

The biggest thing since World War II was when Ukraine was invaded by Russia. Everyone said this is the defining moment as to whether democracy will prevail and whether a free Nation, a sovereign Nation, will be allowed to maintain its sovereignty and its freedom. AND yet that proved NOT to be the case as a new atrocity intervened on the global scene which is the Palestinian question or do we call it the Palestinian problem or what do we call it? Yes it is a colonial settler situation but it's unique. WHEN the British left India, they hadn't tried to kill the millions and millions of Indians who inhabit the most populous nation on Earth and they had NO intention of taking all the land and killing all the people or forcing them into the adjoining countries. The same thing with the other colonies the British finally left. THEY actually left the people & the land-- although much damaged-- but still there. Even all the Middle East countries America has left or partially left, as military bases remain, the land remains and the people remain. BUT here they want the land and they want the people dead. The other thing that is unique is when they compare it to America or Canada or New Zealand or Australia is whom the British colonized, there is a distinction in the nature of the indigenous people. The people in Canada & the United States & New Zealand & Australia were pre-literate --a word that simply means they did not read and write. THESE people could not in real time record what was occurring or tell their history. THESE people did not have lawyers and scientists and doctors to fight for them in the press on their land or in diaspora . THESE people we can control , so said the British. THESE people we can push on to tiny Islands within their original land and that is exactly what was done. Can that be undone I don't think so althouh changes in how the dominant culture relates to the non-dominant culture can be created to allow for a greater dignity and beauty than the ugliness that was left after the British conquered all these lands. Now the hardest thing-- looking at pictures with a discerning eye-- is to try to determine if it's a Jew or if it's a Palestinian and you cannot. THEY are both semitic people & originally they both came from that land and they have many things in common. The Palestinians are a very literate people. They have lawyers, doctors, engineers and they can read and write and they can write their history and they can read it to the world. And yet this goes on and they are relegated to being a conquered indigenous people just as the other colonies of Britain but that is NOT truly the case. THEY are unique. They are also unique because the nation that took over the colonization is a nation that says it has NO religion and yet it says you can only belong to it if you have that religion & they refuse to do DNA studies of any of their people so they cannot determine who actually is a Jew. Anyone can go there and say they are a Jew and they will be given land and a gun in order to go to the Palestinian territory and kill any Palestinian who has a home that they want. A lot of New York Jews who are losers and could NEVER afford any property in NY and can't even afford the rent anymore in New York take advantage of this. They go there and say-- I'm a Jew. Give me my gun. Give me my citizenship and I want a police escort to enter into the Palestinian territory and take my house from the Palestinian who lives there. Kennedy once said famously:"Ich bin ein Berliner". Will Biden say when he goes to the Holy Land : I am a Jew. Actually that is NOT valid and not because he is a purported Catholic --although in essence he's not a Christian because Christians do not do what he does & Catholics never accepted the zionist state due to their knowing the with Christ, the Old testament was superceded rby the the New Testament. BUT what he must say to gain solidarity with these people us --i an a Zionist--and so he has said that although as you can see it doesn't have the same effect as what Kennedy said after World War II to the people who had been conquered. For one thing, the zionists have not yet been conquered but of course they will because TRUTH wills out and God always stands on the side of TRUTH & whether you believe in God or are atheist like the zionist fake Jews-- TRUTH WILLS OUT & THE TRUTH WILL SET U FREE.🕊️ If Kennedy were alive today --unlike his disgraceful offspring --he would NEVER go to Berlin and say : Ich ben ein Beeliner, because Germany is complicit with America in genocide and once again has fallen on the wrong side of History. Germany like America r nation's of disgrace with no dignity and no humanity and they will go down in history as such. This is the second time for Germany and it is beyond the pale and will NEVER be redeemed. Eith America, we do not know if it will be beyond redemption. Time will tell. America has and is still in the process of redeeming itself from its disgraceful slave past; yet the black New York Mayor Adams just gave a prize and declared a Day of Honor for a woman of the Zionist state whose last name is Golan which is a name her family stole from the Golan Heights which was stolen from Syria by the zionist state and is NOT recognized by the rest of the world, with the exception of the US and the UK who are complicit war crimes and genocide but will one day pay the piper.

I know a bunch of people who converted to Judaism in a few weeks, went to Israel, got money from the Israeli state and a house in an illegal settlement. My Palestinian mother-in-law in 1948 was chased from her family house in Haifa as a kid from a bunch of Israeli soldiers and lost everything. It is a huge shame

I am heart broken to see what these children are going through and they aren’t really going through it because there is no safe other side for them. Like all humane people of the world Injustice l want the madness to stop and for them to be free and to be fed and cared for and to be safe and secure. Frankly I think the documentary "Where Olive Trees Weep" should be live made available to everyone and free. It is a shame to focus on profit when a film like this can enlighten the world and perhaps convert those in the world ignorant to this history, who have been brainwashed at home or alternatively manipulated by world media. There are sympathetic agencies and/or countries who could compensate the film maker's to ensure this message gets to every corner of the world instead of a few screening locations for the well off to attend.

I can assure you that there is people in this planet that have no credit cards, some with no home and many that live in countries in which $2 will be a LOT of money. While releasing our previous movie we received one money order of $5 with a note saying this person was homeless and had no credit card but was grateful to having been allowed to watch the film for free.
