With the official end of the War in Afghanistan, we speak with Rafia Zakaria, author of “Against White Feminism,” about how U.S. officials used the plight of the women in the country to justify the 2001 invasion and subsequent occupation. “Feminism has been delegitimized in Afghanistan because it is associated with an occupying force,” says Zakaria. “Now Afghan women are left to pick up the pieces and deal with the Taliban.”

The empowerment she Rafia speaks of, the radical struggle she speaks of is firmly rooted in Western cultural construct and thinking. In countries like Afghanistan or Pakistan it can be heard and debated on in the ruling classes, who are often Western educated or influenced but outside of that it is viewed as an alien cultural imposition.

Here's a quote from an Afghan women (a surgeon) about Afghanistan before the US destroyed it (the first time). "Every girl could go to high school and university. We could go where we wanted and wear what we liked. We used to go to cafes and the cinema to see the latest Indian films on a Friday... It all started to go wrong when the mujahedin(Taliban) started winning. ...these were the people the West supported.”

Lest there be an inkling of doubt to this response, I adamantly disagree with the Taliban policies and practices. However, I also acknowledge that the U.S. and all her western allies that participated in the debacle in Afghanistan have no say in how the country should be governed. All the pearl clutching by major news outlets in the U.S. and Western Europe about “the women” and “the girls” is disgusting as if they care more about these women than their Afghan men. The supposed shocked behavior can hardly hide the fact that crimes against humanity took place and many human beings died as a result of this invasion and occupation. When the U.S. and her NATO allies had maximum forces in Afghanistan they did not sue for peace or tried to negotiate a political solution. Instead they went on an orgy of killing, maiming and destroying. 66,000 Afghani military personal died and this does not account for the tens of thousands of civilians plus those fighting on the side of the Taliban. The Taliban are a part of Afghanistan whether the west likes it or not. The aliens in this scenario are those that traveled thousands of miles to drop tons of bombs and destroy the fabric of that already fragile society. Though I vehemently disagree with the Taliban, it’s not up to me to decide the fate of Afghanistan. Tragically those scenes at the airport could have been avoided if the west sought dialogue and a politically negotiated settlement. The change that will eventually come to Afghanistan must come from within. As for those Afghanis that sold their souls to the U.S. they will soon find out that life in America is not what it is advertised as. They will find out about the grinding poverty in her inner cities. They will see for themselves how shamelessly Americans allow the homeless to flood the streets in major cities. They sold out their countrymen by cooperating with the foreign invaders and of course they are scared for the treason they committed against their own nation. All of this could have been avoided were it not for the arrogance of claiming the right to kill whoever was deemed beneath our so-called “Western” values.
@josephrichards7624

So you agree that the values that the Taliban have are objectively wrong, right? I'm assuming you are as you are saying that the west have parts that are objectively wrong like going into other countries or that the people who sold their soul to the US did the wrong thing. Or is what the US did only wrong from the relative perspective of the Taliban? If the Taliban do have beliefs/actions that are morally wrong, how does this necessary change happen so that the needless horrors in the country can stop and the women can be liberated? Or do we not worry about the women there

What a good example of racialist intersectional ''feminism'' (Rafia) on one hand and universalist true feminist (Mahbouba) on the other. The first one inferiorize or reduce feminism under religious and cultural dominations (see her precedent book ''veil''), and was even saying that ''burqa isn't necessarily a sign of oppression'' before being interrupted by the end of the interview (the typical islamic ''feminism'' rhetoric), while the other recognize the universal goods of education and the progress that have been implemented the last two decades despite the war and the occupation of international forces in Afghanistan. Yes the money came from up to bottom, but the afghan women started and struggle from the bottom. It is a question of economics, not of ''fake or white'' feminism. Rafia despises (probably unintentionally) the struggles of afghan women that were smart enough to take the money and work in various NGOs without being blindly unaware of the great flaws of an economy where 75% of the incomes come from foreign aids. Concerning the so-called feminists who were supporting the war and invasion of Afghanistan by the U.S., I think it was neoconservative ideology poorly disguised as ''feminism'' for the media and the social acceptance of the american people, not much the fault of ''white'' feminism because feminists are the ones that suffer the most in the USA from that same religious neoconservative ideology, the best recent example being the abortion ban law in Texas.

Disgusting video title!! US cable 1979 - ‘The United States’ larger interests... would be served by the demise of the PDPA Government, despite whatever setbacks this might mean for future social and economic reforms in Afghanistan.’ Stats from Afghanistan in the 1980s, half the university students were women and women made up 40% of Afghanistan’s doctors, 70% of its teachers and 30% of its civil servants. America created and armed the Taliban (Mujahideen) who hung the Afghan PDPA President by a street light. It's in the history books, you can't hide the Afghanistan that existed under the People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan, which the US destroyed.

The Taliban have majority support in Afghanistan and even those who oppose them have similar views on women and society. Is Zakaria interested in challenging that?
@sebastiencarpentier2264
@sebastiencarpentier2264 2 жыл бұрын
That is just no true. Talibans don't have majority support in Afghanistan and reliable data exist to show that. Yes, the talibans have some strong support, maybe between 25%to 40% in general which is a lot, but not the majority. Even among the Pashtuns, where their support is the strongest and maybe the majority, there is a strong opposition to the theocracy project of the Islamic Emirates of the talibans. Secondo, there was a strong left-wing population in Afghanistan not so long ago, and there are even anarchists (Anarchist Union of Iran and Afghanistan) in the country that are getting stronger and stronger in the more young and urban regions. But also, the Tajiks and other militias in the antitaliban resistance of Panjshir and the NRF with Ahmad Massoud (son of the legendary ''lion of Panjshir'' commandant who successfully resisted against the Russians and the talibans until 2001) and Amrullah Saleh are a lot more progressive on the issue of women and other issues. The want an authentic democracy on the form of a federation with all the ehtnic populations and all the sectors of the civil society having a determinant role in the decicion making process. But I agree with you that Zakaria and her racialist and intersectional ''feminism'' is a useful idiot for the islamists contrary to the likes of Mahbouba who are real universalist feminists (meaning against patriarchy in the West AND in islamic coutries).

I'm sure the Afghans didn't think the occupation would last forever. In fact, by the way many of them are actually so accepting of the taliban return, they didn't wish for the occupation and the devastation that it wrought to happen at all. And it was in championing that occupation and the brutatily it wrought on the Afghan population that white "feminists" are very much complicit.
