This speech including calling Congress back into session put the a Republican Party out of power within the house for nearly 50 years.

This moment is what changed politics forever and transformed the Democratic party from a racist white man's party to one for equal rights

@@Atheneon At the time, the Democrat party had two different factions. Northern Dems supported passing federal equal rights laws while southern Dems wanted those laws to be up to the states. Truman (acting against advice from his advisers) pledged to include civil rights in his platform. Despite mostly every poll saying he would lose, he won. It was the first time a Democrat won without the South and made Dems adapt civil rights into their platform
