Much has been made of the method of destruction, but it has never been explained WHY they are demolishing it. WHY? Why demolish a tall, imposing and fairly attractive building in the heart of Tokyo? It's only 30 years old and it doesn't look old. Was there anything wrong with it structurally? It seems ridiculous to waste a building like this - surely a good use could have been found for it? Seems especially stupid in this economic climate.

All you need to do to bring down the strongest, tallest, buildings...is to start a small fire in an office or two and it will fall perfectly in its own footprint within a couple hours. We learned this new technique on 9/11 when it happened to Building 7. There is no longer a need for bombs, explosives etc.

probably many factors, one being inefficient utilization of space. Building footprint is much smaller than the actual allotment. Real estate is at a premium in Tokyo, If youve been there you would understand. Might also be to update the building to better building codes ie better pilings etc for things like ground liquefaction and earthquake standards. Could just be because the new owner didnt want an old building there. Buildings, even construction techniques in japan are years ahead technology wise compared to most western countries, people want new not old especially when it comes to paying crazy rent.
