*Don't do this mod, it's really not worth it. Instead use the money to just buy a better pedal.*
Direct drive feels so similar to chain drive you probably couldn't tell the difference in a blind test.
SORRY FOR THE FLICKERING! I didn't notice it until I was editing and couldn't fix it. This whole video was shot on an iPhone 6!
I upgrade my Pearl Demonator double bass pedal to direct drive with a precision bearing driven drive shaft and new silicone rubber beaters. This can be done to similar pedals with the same size cam shaft such as the Tama Speed cobra.
Direct Drive Links: Pearl DRL-300TSA
Drive Shaft: Trick Drums P1V6P
Beaters: Tama Accu-Strike CB900AS

Nice mod, man. I’ve had the same pedals for three years and love them, but have recently made some changes too. First, I kept the chain-drive and removed the orange cam because the linear roll feels better to me. After years of playing eccentric cams, I was surprised at that. The other thing I did was change out the cheaper sealed shaft bearings for some good removable-shield skateboard bearings. I bought an 8-pack of top-quality Bronsons (about $30 - same model that Tony Hawk endorses), lubed them with Tri-Flow, and swapped them all out, with two spares for my parts box. The change was drastic and it only took me about 30 minutes. Plus, it gave me a reason to clean the hell out of everything. My driveshaft doesn’t have any play in it yet, but previous experience with Yamaha doubles tells me it’s probably going to happen sooner or later. Thanks for the heads-up on the Trick model.

I came to the same realisation about removing the orange cam when I felt my 25 year old double pedals felt more natural to play. Am enjoying the 930s so much better without the cams.
@michaelandcolinspop
@michaelandcolinspop 4 жыл бұрын
@Jason Vella I was completely surprised at how much better the 930s felt after pulling the cam spacer. I used a single dw9000 for ten years. It was a great pedal, but I had to set it to maximum eccentricity just to get the feel I wanted, and with the resulting HUGE cam, the pedal always felt super smooth but heavy. When I got my 932, I was lazy and just left the spacers in because I thought only an eccentric cam would feel right. I almost wish Pearl shipped them without the spacers installed. My inspiration to remove them was seeing the DemonChain. It has practically the same cam dimensions as the 930, but without the spacers, for a ton more money.

@@cornellrpgdrums They're Bronson G3 Jaws (Aaron Homoki) bearings. I left the shields on them after adding TriFlow so that I wouldn't have to tear the pedals down and lube them as often. At this point, I service them every six months and haven't had any issues.

Hey bro, do you prefer the direct drive better than chain? I have the exact Peral pedal like yours but I'm thinking about an upgrade with the Pearl Deamon Drive (chain or direct), however I've been watching some reviews on youtube that made me more confused. Some people say the direct drive you loose the punch a little bit, but you gain on speed. Since I play mostly rock and heavy metal (use the double pedal but not so fast), maybe I will remain with the chain drive...If you could let me know your experience I'll appreciate it! Cheers!
@aaaveritt
@aaaveritt 4 жыл бұрын
There is no simple or short way to answer this but I'll try to be blunt, chain vs. direct drive = no difference. I know, shocking right? Not what you were expecting or wanted to hear? Well it's really simple they both do the same thing, when you push on the pedal they both pull the beater into the drum head. Both will feel the same doing this, they will however feel different on the way back and I can understand why that feeling with direct drive will make people say it's better when in fact it's just different. A chain can bend, a direct drive link can not so there can be some give in the pedal feel with a chain pedal not with direct drive. On the other hand you can adjust a chain pedal to feel like it's direct drive and I'm not talking just the spring tension. Either way, neither one will be faster or make you better, they will only feel different and only you can decide which one you like better or if it even matters. I don't think it does, I can play a $100 chain driven double bass pedal just as fast as I can play a $1000 direct drive double bass pedal, I've tried it & neither is faster or more accurate when adjusted properly. The pedal isn't the limiting factor, the drummer is, me. The $1000 pedal definitely felt way better but that's exactly why it costs that much. More expensive pedals are usually a better build quality (they can handle abuse from gigs and touring better) but they always universally "feel' better. Whenever someone says a pedal is better they always mean is "feels" better and they use words like, smoother, faster, quicker, lighter, punchier, or more power to justify it being "better." I watched a few of your vids, you're a darn good drummer and you're actually playing gigs so I would definitely recommend an upgrade. You should easily be able to find a $500-$600 double pedal on the used market for about $200-$300 and I think that's the sweet spot. But I can't stress this enough, always try before you buy if you can. Btw, I upgraded to the Tama Speed Cobra 910 double pedals, got them used for $250 & they came with the hard carrying case. I used the parts from this pedal and converted it to direct drive as well and made a video covering the build: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kKiDh5uem5q7mYk.html

Spend the money on a better pedal instead. You can find a speed cobra 910 double pedal on guitar centers used website for $250 and that's about as high end as a normal drummer should really ever need. This pearl pedal used plus the direct drive links cost the same and don't perform even close to the speed cobras. Direct drive is completely unnecessary unless you are actually serious about dedicating your life to being one of the fastest professional double bass drummers around. If that's the case you still want a better pedal, Trick Drums bigfoot.

Ebay has a handful of listings for used Pearl drive shafts. Amazon has cheap generic ones for $15-$30 search "pedal drive shaft" Most drive shafts from most companies will work as well, so you might be able to find a cheaper one from a different brand but any Pearl branded one should work for you. DW will definitely not work and if you're unsure make sure they accept returns, preferably free returns.

If you're playing just for fun or money is tight it's an ok pedal, it'll get the job done but once you get the hang of it you'll want something better. If you're a serious drummer or playing in a band you'll definitely want to go with a better pedal. I always recommend the speed cobra 910 double, you can always find it used for around $250, craigslist or guitar centers website used section. Can you give a update on how you’re liking them so far? Any problems at all? Better than the chain setup?
@aaaveritt
@aaaveritt 4 жыл бұрын
The pedals were awesome and they served their purpose greatly for about the 9 months I played them, I wanted the cheapest direct drive setup to see if I liked how they feel. However they have been returned to stock form because I upgraded to some much nicer pedals and moved all the mods to the new pedals. Not going to spoil it just yet, I did film it, I plan on having it uploaded in 2 or 3 weeks. There were 2 issues I had with this pearl setup though: [1] Main issue was lack of adjustability to accommodate the mods. I didn't realize this at first because its not really that big of a deal, it really wasn't THAT noticeable and I easily figured out how to play around it (just less sloppy, don't let the beater fly back) but it was there enough to annoy me a bit here and there. On a scale of 10 I'd rate it at about 3. But TL:DR first, basically this created a "dead spot" when in the split second where the beater rebounded back as far as it could after a kick, if you tried to push on the pedal again there was enough resistance it felt like someone was holding the beater for a second and would make you miss your hit by a lot messing with your accuracy. Rarely happened though. Only finish reading #1 for the full explanation why: The angle of the footboards and beaters can only be adjusted together, you adjust one the other moves with it. The mods introduced too many issues with the angles so there were 2 extremes. The direct drive link bolted on top of the footboard lowered the footboard and their clearance and reduced all adjustability. Raise the footboard the beater would be too far back and create too much resistance that would actually mess with your accuracy. Move the beaters forward and the footboards would bottom out on the hoop clamp screw or there would be so little travel you wouldn't be able to put power into any kicks, they'd just be weak and quiet. The middle ground, how I had it set up, had a bit of both of those issues. Kicks were a tad soft, which was fine, just kick a little harder which really helped build up my muscles quicker, cool. But this resulted in the main issue, if I played hard and sloppy and let the beater fly all the way back after a hit it would pull the cam up all the way almost parallel to the direct drive link, they would hit and the angle created so much resistance that if you tried pushing the pedal at that split second it wouldn't go or it would lag and hit way after you meant for that beater to land. This really rarely did happen though mainly because of issue #2, I baby'd them. [2] It is a cheaper pedal made all out of aluminum so I never felt like I could really go all out on these things without causing some sort of damage or breaking something. They probably could handle it but I also planned on upgrading these soon enough anyway so I wanted to keep them nice to resell 'em. As far as which is better chains or direct drive, honestly that really comes down to personal preference. To me they really feel so similar I don't think it matters either way. I feel like its the same argument as which is better: felt beaters or plastic beaters? Neither! One just sounds better to you but neither one will make you a better drummer. I will say I do prefer direct drive but I'm probably extremely biased since I already bought the parts I feel I should put my money to good use... The one thing I will say about direct drive is to me it just kinda feels tighter, if that make any sense at all. I don't know how to explain it any better. I wouldn't recommend the direct drive links for this pedal simply cause I don't think it's worth the money vs. the issues, also you can get a much better pedal for the same price. I would highly recommend the drive shaft for for every single double bass pedal out there, it will help you be more accurate and just feels so much smoother and nicer. Plus it's universal so if you ever upgrade, even a different brand (like I did) it should still work (mine did).

aaaveritt Thanks for such an in-depth response, wasn’t expecting so much insight but it’s very much appreciated. Looks like I’ll pass on this specific upgrade for now, I do fine with chain pedals as is and I still don’t think I can personally justify the cost for genuine direct drive pedals ($1000+ CAD for a decent double bass). I’ve tried direct drive pedals before and they do feel better, but I don’t know if it’s *$1000 better* per se. Thanks again for the detailed response, looking forward to that video you mentioned.

@michaelandcolinspop 4 жыл бұрын
@aaaveritt Thanks a ton for the update. Like I wrote in my response to your video, I really like the feel of chains, but your project provided a lot of food for thought, especially regarding the new connecting rod. My bearing swap really upgraded my pedals in terms of quickness and feel, but the most drastic change was removing the orange cam spacer. I played a dw9000 single for almost a decade and, while I loved the status of owning a pedal like that, it never felt right unless I set the cam to fully eccentric for maximum leverage at the start of a stroke. The Pearls are the exact opposite, albeit with much, much smaller-radiused cams and, for me, feel so much more responsive than the dw ever did. Yamaha has a great video analysis of the adjustment impacts on their new 9C pedals where they detail lever arm vs. rotational angle, footboard travel, and force. It’s enough to make an engineer like me geek out. Thanks again for an excellent video.

@aaaveritt
@aaaveritt 9 ай бұрын
Neither is better and neither will make you a better drummer, they're just slightly different feeling. A chain is just a bunch of tiny direct drive links all connected. They feel so close it would be hard to tell a difference in a blind test. I can play 250bpm heel toe the same on $100 chain pedals as I do on a $1000 direct drive pedals.

Should have upgraded the bearings too, it's a cheap upgrade and would have made it even closer to a demon drive. Also, there are cheaper high-end drive shafts on the market other than the expensive Trick one. Ahead makes a $60 one for example. You could even get ball bearing spring cams.
@aaaveritt
@aaaveritt 4 жыл бұрын
You just assume the bearings are not already upgraded like everyone else. You also assume the bearings are different from the demonator and the demon drive pedals, check the part numbers. This isn't an upgrade all the things kind of video, there's a theme. And it's interesting how you recommend a cheaper crappier drive shaft then mention the extremely expensive spring bearing cams... priorities kid. BTW the drive shaft you mentioned is garbage it uses u-joints not ball bearings like the Trick one, huge difference. If you haven't actually used the gear or upgrades don't try to justify an opinion just because you can't afford it, make friends with someone who can, then try their gear, then form an opinion that actually carries weight.

Waste of money don't do it. Sell your pedals and get better ones. Guitar center used pedals are usually half the price of new. Direct drive will not make you a better drummer, it's a slightly DIFFERENT feel. If someone says if feels better that's a matter of opinion. Even if it feels better it won't make you a better drummer and you just spent $100 to make it feel different when you could of used that money for better pedals.

They probably would but it's definitely not worth the money to do the mod to that pedal, you'd be better off using that money to buy a better pedal. Chains and direct drive feel so similar, and neither will make you a better drummer, but a better built pedal can allow you to play faster more easily with less effort. There's a good reason Trick drums pedals are the go to for super fast double bass players.

I just bought this pedal. It was Long boardes, looked similar to the Demon Drive and was supposedly a huge Sweetwater sale with a regular price of $400+ I figured it was a good deal...and then after ordering I see it's the same price everywhere and Pearl's own KZfaq channel called it a student level pedal?! 🤬 So, is this mod worth doing? Or should I just return the pedal?

your video and your description totally contradict each other. is it worth it or not? You say to just spend the money on another pedal but where are you getting a good direct drive pedal for around 150-200 bucks?
@aaaveritt
@aaaveritt 3 жыл бұрын
TL:DR Direct drive or chain does not matter, neither is better, just buy the best pedal you can afford and practice your ass off. I can't edit a video after its posted, but a description can be edited years later which clearly I did here after having plenty of time to evaluate the actual value of these modifications, along with 2 different pedal upgrades. A stock Tama speed cobra or iron cobra with chains (the $500 versions) will blow this modified Pearl pedal away in every possible way you can imagine. They are just better built in every way, period. And I got a mint used Speed Cobra 910 double with case from guitar center's website shipped for $250, the deals are out there. I think a cheaper, better, chain pedal is a wiser choice than a worse, more expensive, direct drive pedal you also have to waste time modifying. Now I can tell from your comment you are like most and after I explain this next part you still won't grasp what I'm saying to you. Ready? DIRECT DRIVE IS NOT BETTER THAN CHAINS, IT WILL NOT MAKE YOU FASTER AND IT WILL NOT MAKE YOU A BETTER DRUMMER IN ANY WAY. (ever notice how a chain is a bunch of tiny direct drives linked together? they serve a small function of the overall pedal as a whole) Harsh, I know. It's nothing more than an old trend in metal that has gained marketing hype that no one is second guessing because no one in metal can afford them in the first place. Personally I've been playing double bass from the beginning for 20 years now. I currently use a $800 custom Trick Drums Dominator low mass direct drive double pedal. You can throw the cheapest $100 pdp chain driven double pedal on my kit and I can play just as fast, I can still play heel toe and kinda swivel, my ability and speed don't change. Ask me how I know, I've literally done it.

@@aaaveritt why do you sound so salty? I asked a simple question. From my own experience, I have a pearl eliminator demon chain link double pedal and my friend has a pearl eliminator demon direct drive single pedal and I can totally notice a difference. The spring tension and everything are basically identical on both pedals.. I can feel way more responsiveness in the direct drive.
@Rberg1105
@Rberg1105 2 жыл бұрын
@@mulletpower2009 I think what he means is that the extra responsiveness doesn’t increase your ability automatically. You can get fast on any pedal, but no pedal will make you fast. I’ll have to agree with him. I once “upgraded” from a dw 5002 to an axis longboard and totally regretted it.

Nice try, dude, but what about upgrading beraings? I mean bearings around spring... That demon drive shaft can't make a huge difference when you have stock demonator bearings... Bearings.
