Demonstrating Overgrown Draft Foot Trimming

Going through the footage for our "Down and Dirty, Heartlander's Journey" series, and I thought this little bit of our day might go better in the How-To section. Drafts can get quite long, and a lot of young farriers will benefit from knowing just how to look through the excess growth to find the foot underneath. Always enjoy Mr.chris work.. when I was younger I done a ton of drafts and made all handmades.. lots of fun for a young man.. old elbows not so much..😂..

Bei den Shire Horses kannst du alle vier Wochen den Huf ausschneiden! Sonst hast du Bratpfannen Hufe mit Rissen drin! Sehr pflegebedürftig die Shire Hufe. Schön das es Jemanden gibt der sich der Arbeit an diesen grossen Hufen annimmt! Sehr gute Arbeit!

Yes sir. This wasn't intended to be released like this when we filmed it, so she was just in regular teaching mode. I wish she'd let me film her doing a how-to.

WHY did the screen suddenly go darker at the 315 mark? farriers have such antiquated tools, why not invent electric nippers?

Nippers are used in a variety of ways. There is no point to having an electric nipper that continually nips, especially when they are using them to remove shoes.

it wd not continually nip, it wd only nip when a person applied enough pressure on the nippers, kinda like the difference between regular steering and power steering on a car. @@DynamicUnoTea

@@Lauren-vd4qe But they aren't working on static objects. Horses can move their legs at any time. When horses move or if they are spooked the farrier will likely tense up so that they don't lose balance and pressure will remain applied to the nippers in a situation where you wouldn't want that to happen.

plenty of horses put up with electric grinders on their hooves; just a matter of getting them used to it. and electric nippers will only clamp if you have enough pressure on them, wd b instantaneous, not continuous, like a 1 second snap, thats all. @@DynamicUnoTea

@@Lauren-vd4qe I'm assuming you are advocating for it so that it takes very little energy for the farrier to use. Though I imagine settings would have to be adjusted depending on if you are nipping a frog vs. if you are working on a large draft horse. Also depending on output, the cost of the nippers could be unreasonable. Then they would have to purchase and carry around extra batteries and chargers. If farriers in general were unable to trim hooves due to physical weakness, I imagine that some form of technology would need to be applied in order to assist them. As they seem capable of their line of work, at present, things will likely remain as they are.

How in 2024 they haven’t figured out power tools and automatic crushes for horses is beyond me

You try using power tools on your nails and see how well that works for you. As for crushes, horses don’t do well in them, plus their legs don’t bend like that.

Any reason that annoying lady is keep talking when u actually doing the work?…U should stop,and let her do it…Since she talks like she knows the deal…And even if she does know,if she is not doing the work have the 7 years from your momma(or not)and be quite when someone else is working and you’re not

Excuse me? Any reason you’re commenting nonsense? She is talking to the 15 students. TEACHING the students who paid money to learn from them. Kelly is his wife and an extremely educated farrier. Have some respect.
