This BBC documentary from Christopher Hitchens was made in 1989 and was part of the Frontiers series. It looks at the division of Cyprus brought about by Turkey's invasion in 1974 and the attempt by the Turkish occupation regime to wipe out Greek presence, history and culture from northern Cyprus.

The north part of Cyprus, is occupied by Turkey since 1974 MILITARY OCCUPATION The majority of all those are still our stolen lands and properties PLEASE We expect from you people to RESPECT that. Of what happened against Cyprus, on 1974, is very similar ,of what Russia is doing against Ukraine

stop lying man. Cyprus which was ruled by different suzerains, but which never in its entire history came under Greek rule, was conquered by the Ottomans in 1571 and ruled by them until 1878.

Mycenaean Greeks were undoubtedly inhabiting Cyprus from the late stage of the Bronze Age, while the island's Greek name is already attested from the 15th century BC in the Linear B script.

Greek Cypriots, as a dominant population in the island, erased presence of Turkish Cypriots from the government and all state organs of Cyprus Republic by force starting with bloody noel at 23 december 1963. This was against the all establishing agreement of Cyprus Republic. Ethnic-Unitary state established by force. This is the starrting point of Cyprus problem.

If you go a little bit deeper you will find that its not as simplistic as you put it. As for the so called starting point, you choose a date which you think is convenient for you

@KRY83 didn't say it's not important. You are creating a narrative of your own making. To say everything started in December 1963 ignores previous events going back years, of which both sides were guilty of being manipulated. But if you want to go down the road of who did what to you first, be my guest

@@sonnyjoannou9413 In political struggle, People are not children to be manipulated! There are particular political targets, ideological orientations and even class struggles in societies. This problem has Int'l relations aspect too. Manipülation is not an explanation, even not an answer.

@KRY83 people are constantly being manipulated. If you don't understand this basic fact then there is nothing to say. If you want to, speak to the prominent Turkish Cypriot journalist Ahmet Cavit and he will explain how manipulation has happened. There are many other Turkish Cypriot journalists that will say as much and more. Find out how many Turkish Cypriot journalists and prominent people were killed by the security services because they were exposing the truth
