This is a brilliant radio range tutorial video, if not the best on youtube, a natural teacher! we need a lot more radio tutorials like this one! im new to the hobby and find it very hard finding videos that teach us about radio as great as radio prepper does. Thank you!

A super video. I use 71.3/Freq in MHZ for copper wire = 1/4 λ MTRS (each leg of a 1/2λ wave dipole). Good tip about attaching wire to the negative port of the battery. Every prepper should at least have a CB radio - super functional and license free.

I actually had my first ducting experience two days ago. Here in Massachusetts, in the US, I was working POTA at 10W, with an EFHW sloper. Normally, I can expect about 700 miles or so, which puts me in the midwest. I ended up picking up western Arizona, on 20m, which is about 1200 miles away. I have NEVER made a contact that far, on the low wattage I use. It was pretty cool :)

Ducting propagation does not happen at HF frequencies. That is a propagation mode in the VHF/UHF bands. At 20M (14 MHz) you were using regular sky wave (skip) propagation.

Thank you for the talk, Gil, it was a very good class in the radio art. Aboard the ship USS Newport News, in the 1960's we received our own signal from around the earth, I cannot remember the frequency though. 73's🎙KD9OAM🎧📻

Always appreciate your videos, great explanations. I will probably have students watch this as part of thier training for thier Tech license. I do disagree to a degree on power, specifically when it comes to VHF near-regional. I do a lot of VHF FM and SSB Simplex operations as well as "backup" the local repeater on the reverse. I firmly agree that Height, Antenna and cable quality come first, but I know from experience, without ducting, that added power on the vertical or the yagi helps. Of course you can't actually pass traffic if they can hear you because of power but you can't hear them, so it is much lower on the priorities and that Height/Antenna/Feedline are critical. Simplex without ducting on VHF FM can be 40-50 miles consistently at 100-150w (even better on VHF SSB) depending on terrain, height, antenna, cable. Also an amplifier can help overcome power losses due to cable quality and length, which unfortunately for me is 50ft for the tower and 70ft to the shack from there. Again, thanks for the video!

Salut, Dommage que ta vidéo ne soit pas en français 😁 J'ai quitté la Côte d'Azur pour le Nicaragua il y a presque 3 ans, et ici il y a beaucoup d'endroits ou le téléphone cellulaire ne passe pas. Ancien CBiste, j'ai de suite pensé à un émetteur/récepteur portable, pour pouvoir garder le contact dans certaines situations. Malheureusement dans la région où je me trouve, le relief est loin d'être un champ plat à perte de vue, mais il y a un plafond nuageux qui peux parfois aider. J'ai repéré ces radios type baofeng qui vont jusqu'à 10W, et ces antennes nagoya 771. Cependant j'ai bien peur que ça ne soit pas suffisant pour une distance de 10/15km dans les conditions locales. Ici il y a des arbres, et des petites montagnes de 20 à 50 mètres de haut un peu partout sur les axes physiques principaux de communication dont j'aurais besoin. Et il ne faut pas compter sur un répétiteur. Si je pouvais avoir une chance de communiquer sur 15km dans ces conditions, ça serait avec quel moyen d'après toi ? VHF ? 10W seraient suffisants ? Une antenne tactique pliable ? J'ai besoin d'avoir un talkie en moto. Il faut que ce soit portable. Attention ce talkie ne sort pas 10W sans doute 5 /6 w comme beaucoup de ces appareils chinois , voir les bancs d’essais de Baofeng ou autres marques du meme genre qui annoncent 8 ou 10 W et qui ne sortent que 5/6 w au mieux .

What if you want a low power handheld that covers a 50 mile or less radius from your home? I would like to listen in on information concerning my community, not the whole state, nation or world.

Reception, no problem, transmitting, you'll never get 50 miles unless you're high up..

I have a question i have walkies for emergency, how far can the walkies reach another person say in new york. And if i was on the 15th floor in Manhattan trying to contact a person 10 miles away on the the 6th floor of a apartment, could i reach them. And is higher elevation aka going up floors or a roof increase my chances to reach a person farther away. The walkies are rated 5 watts and are retevis frs

That should be no.problem if the radios can "see" each other. Yes, height helps a great deal.

This is a very informative video Gil. Thank you very much! The longest Winlink VARA connection I have made is from the USA to Australia on 10 meters, though I had to get up before sunrise, set up my station in the back yard, and make the connection. One little correction I would like to make is that most of the FRS channels now allow 2 watts. There are some that still have a limit of .5 watts. 73 KD5YOU

Great video. One thing, FRS in the US has changed to 2 watts on the fifteen 462 MHz channels and 0.5 watt on the seven 467 MHz channels.

I thought channels 1-7 and 15-22 is the best to use more power on walkies.

Channels 8-4 are between the repeater inputs. That is why they are limited to 0.5 watts and are illegal to transmit on from mobile units.

All of the channels on the 462 MHz frequencies. This are channels 1 - 7 (seven of the original FRS channels) and 15 - 22 (the eight original GMRS simplex / repeater outputs). The 0.5 watt channels (8 -14) were the other seven original FRS channels. They are in-between the original GMRS repeater channels. They are still 0.5 watt to reduce the interference with GMRS repeaters.
