Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.forgottenweapons.com
Created by noted South African gun designer Tony Neophytou, the NTW-20 is a bolt action anti-materiel rifle made in 20x82mm, 20x110mm, and 14.5x115mm. The weapon began as idea to use the large quantities of surplus 14.5mm ammunition available at the time, and a recognition that the 14.5mm Soviet cartridge was an excellent anti-armor round, with a really remarkably high muzzle velocity. To widen the rifle's capabilities, it was decided to incorporate an easily interchangeable barrel, and also chamber it for the 20x82mm round used in the Inkunzi PAW individual weapon and Inkunzi Strike machine gun. The 20x82mm is low velocity compared to traditional 20mm cartridges, carrying the same explosive or incendiary payload but without the punishing recoil of what was originally an aircraft cannon cartridge.
Both of these cartridges are fed from a 3-round box magazine on the left side of the action. A single-shot version in the longer 20x110mm cartridge was also developed by request of a military client, but this cartridge is too long to fit the magazine. A version in .50 BMG was considered, but decided against on the basis of the 14.5mm being just as available and substantially more effective.
The gun is liberally sprinkled with clever engineering and design features - things like using the recoil-absorbing travel of the action to recock the hammer, and the use of both 20mm and 14.5mm cartridge cases as levers for unlocking the barrel. The optic was custom made for the rifle, an 8x56mm long eye relief scope to prevent any chance of the scope bell injuring the shooter during recoil. The trigger mechanism uses only a single spring, and is easily removed from the action. The bolt handle itself is on a pivot pin, and provides the primary extraction leverage to ensure easy cycling with the high-pressure 14.5mm cartridge.
From a military perspective, the NTW-20 is easily broken apart into barrel and action loads, and can be transported more easily than any comparable weapon by a two-man team. The use of a recoil buffer in the action and an effective muzzle brake makes it a remarkably pleasant 20mm rifle to fire. Of all the anti-material rifles I have fired (Lahti L39, Solothurn S18-1000, Mauser T-Gewehr), the NTW-20 was by far the most comfortable to shoot. It was also the only one in which I jumped at the chance to fire more rounds once the filming needs were met. It certainly has a kick, but not at all a painful one.
Many thanks to Denel Land Systems for allowing me to try out this very cool rifle!

The movement doesn't tell the full story, energy transfer is only part of the equation. The rifle has massive recoil reduction giving it more of a push then punch.
@orangejoe204
@orangejoe204 5 жыл бұрын
As Jay Dunbar noted, recoil consists of both the force of the rearward motion on the weapon, and how long it takes that force to be fully transmitted to the shooter. More weight = better diffusion of the recoil force, which is why an M1911 in .45ACP is less painful to shoot than a Kel-Tec .380 despite being far more powerful. The Denel 20mm has a colossal amount of recoil force, but the muzzle brake mitigates a lot of it, the hydraulic recoil mechanism delays that recoil for a VERRRRY long (relative) period of time, and then whatever's left has to force itself against a rifle that weighs as much as a medium-sized boat anchor. This results in the famous "push" vs. "punch" that allows anti-tank and anti-materiel rifles to be shoulder-fired (rather than tripod mounted, which is the next step up). You get a rather serious "shove" (over a second or so) which pushes your body back many inches, but it's not like getting full-on punched by the rifle in a sixteenth of a second. Try that without all the recoil reducing features and you'd shatter your scapula and dislocate your shoulder. Probably something you'd remember unpleasantly.

There is a game where you can use the NTW by yourself, carrying it around with the ability to aim down sight ONLY if prone or near an object. Carrying it, you (somehow) sprint only slightly faster than average walk speed, and firing this thing makes your camera shoot up into the sky, even with a muzzle brake (seems about right). My favourite part about it is the game-only 20x110 conversion which makes it have only 1 bullet, but increased power and penetration (even though you absolutely don't need it)

That's actually the case. Painful recoil comes from improper posture and from recoil that has enough force to punch you in the shoulder but not enough force to slide your body like this one does. Now imagine if he had his back flat against that blast shield behind him. If he fired the gun then he is going to have a very bad time.

It works fine when shooting for the sides, however you ought to avoid the armoured plates and the spine ridge. The 20mm has a tough time penetrating that part of the body even with AP rounds.( However 14.5mm AP works fine) The ventral plate is generally weak enough for HE to pen and destroy the 4th heart.

Drop the enemy in one shot instead of 20. Hipfire works surprisingly well with power arms and a HUD.
@RyTrapp0
@RyTrapp0 5 жыл бұрын
@@ToastyMozart A HUD that advanced would certainly change the norms of small arms handling in combat situations. At its most basic fundamental, the end goal is to get a projectile to go from the firearm in your hands and into the target, all else is fluid and able to be adjusted as technology makes achieving the end goal easier, simpler, and more intuitive. What we know as "perfect" shooting habits & techniques today are only "perfect" in this small snapshot of history, until technology changes this and makes hitting a target less and less dependent on human skill. And, frankly, that's the most important area of technological development - minimizing the amount of human involvement needed since we're mistake prone, independent, self aware, somewhat unpredictable creatures. I have a feeling that 'Master Chief' would more likely come to fruition as a semi-autonomous robot(I mean, look how far ahead we're talking about) rather than a specially selected human(that could potentially end up being a total head case...) put in a pseudo-biomech suit of sorts. Talk about making it easier to get a projectile to the target, the most minimal of risk.

The trigger assembly is such a neatly designed package. Simple, robust, the design team earned their bread.

Not only that i think with a little bit of tinkering and talk ideas over a magazine fed 20x110 is certainly possible maybe a bit bigger hydraulic recoil buffer it can be manageable too

Not just Cheif, those regular Marines and ODST can run and accurately shoot those 60lb hunks of insta-death like the weight is nothing to them. Those are some super soldiers hahaha.

Casey Hall spartans are pussies compared to the marines, all their whiny strength comes from drugs, child abuse and the suit itself, marines are the real heroes jumping fearlessly right into action, spartans only come when marines have done all the dirty work. Respect for marines.

@@artyom8905 but can a marine survive a flood attack you know the whole reason there’s is Spartans is because there assassins there not jumping right into action the unsc isn’t gonna spent 17 million just for them to get killed by some grunt who was like fuck life I’m gonna die anyways they kill high priority targets the only reason why master chief is a fighter is because he was the only one that could fight the flood and survive that got him so respected that when he walks by on the battle field he just boost moral whenever you play halo even when your not chief you hear the marines go yeah they brought in the big guns most of the time a single elite can take out a company of marines.
