According to my parents, 66 years ago I toddled around after a cocktail party and drained the last of several glasses of booze. A few mins later I vomited copiously! Never wanted alcohol since that day!!!!!

11 years? Is that all? I quit drinking alcohol a couple of weeks after my 50th birthday in October 2003 and I just celebrated my 69th birthday four weeks ago. Unlike both Denise and Lincoln it's never been a "....one day at a time...." thing for me but I remember that when I used to drink I could consume any amount of alcohol and I always knew where I was and what I was doing or what I'd done. The thing that made me quit was because I used to suffer from the most horrendous hangovers and I used what I called my 'Mr Spock' method of quitting, I used pure logic and told myself that if I didn't drink booze in the first place then I wouldn't suffer from any hangovers. In fact it was so effective that I can't stand the smell of alcohol in any of its forms never mind the taste of it these days. While this might sound like the ideal situation for anyone who quits drinking it's surprising the effect that it has on others. Over the past 19 years since I quit drinking alcohol I get discriminated against because I don't drink. You've never lived until you've entered a pub with the sole intention of using their toilets and had to put up with dirty looks - not from the majority of people who are in there enjoying a drink but from the effing bar staff. The same goes for whenever anyone's offered to buy me a drink in a pub ( usually when we're sat outside in the beer garden ) and I say that I want a soft drink....they always come out with the usual phrase of " Go on, have a REAL drink...." with the implication that any drink that doesn't contain alcohol isn't a REAL drink in their eyes. My comeback is always the same in that a soft drink in my eyes is a REAL drink and I'm under no obligation to drink alcohol simply to fit in with their culture, am I? I've come to the conclusion over the years that there are three reasons why people drink alcohol to excess and they're as follows. They either drink to forget their pasts, they drink to remember their pasts or they drink to get rid of their inhibitions in the present day and make complete idiots out of themselves and do things that they'd never think of doing when they're sober.
