Dennis Christopher Talks about being in Breaking Away

At the 2016 L'Eroica California cycling event they showed the film Breaking Away starting Dennis Christopher and he talks about the making and how he got the part to star in the film.

The mark of a great movie is that you can watch it over and over again and each time you watch it, its like the first time. The movie is 40 years old and stands the test of time, well written, well acted, and fun to watch.

I remember seeing the Movie back at the State University I was attending in a Medium size UpState New York State City. I really loved the Movie. when I saw the Movie sometime in Probably the early 1980's. I really love the Scene where after the Italian Bike Racers damage his Bike to Win nad he is heart Broekn, he tells "Katerina" without his Fake Italian Accent - his real name is DAvid (Whatever his last hame is ) and that he is a Cutter.

In 2002 I was in Bloomington, IN., for work and re-traced as much of the movie that I could. Parts of the IU campus had changed but it was really fun to bike ride around the Bloomington area, and I got a flat tire, not on the road but in the parking lot of the holiday inn.

This movie got me into bike racing. I made it all the way to the National Championships from 1984 to 1986.

Am from Indiana and went to IU. ... Love this movie. ... Paul Dooley is one of the most underrated movie fathers of all time. ... "Refund!" "Refund!"

And Barbara Barrie was perfect, too. In fact, the whole cast in that movie was utterly amazing. The stars were aligned just right in that movie. I cannot imagine anyone else doing any of those parts as well -- which is part of the reason the TV series spin-off lacked a bit of real "magic" of the movie.

Yes, Paul Dooley almost stole the show. He had all the best lines! "I know I-ty food when I hear it! It's all them "eenie" foods... zucchini... and linguine... and fettuccine. I want some American food, dammit! I want French Fries!"

"Breaking Away" is the greatest cycling film ever -- and the best film of 1979, in my opinion.

Gary Cottier Why would you call it underrated? It was a big hit when it came out, won some Oscars, and is still rated very high on all the critic-sites. That’s hardly underrated!

Not underrated as it was nominated for 5 Oscars. Underappreciated because most people under 45 have never heard of it despite its success upon release, sure.

I love Dennis' genuine nature. Can't imagine a different Dave Stoller. He made me a believer that he knew cycling, and I'm a cyclist...or was one once. The 70s were ripe years for cycling and this film definitely added to the craze. Actually the 70s was all about wheels (roller-skating, skateboarding, fast cars). Breaking Away came out at the perfect time is what I'm trying to say. Thanks for breathing life into a wonderful movie, Mr. Christopher. Also, enjoyed you in Chariots of Fire, though it was a small role.

It came out when I was in high school and it will always be one of my favorites. The late Steve Teich’s other movie, “American Flyers” is good, too.

Our favorite movie as kids! I know the entire script completely I've seen it over 100 times and watching it as I right this The little 500 and mooch has just got on the bike! I LOVE this true underdog movie. . THEY ALL WON!!

Well what can I say? It's so good to see a movie that has comedy, action, a wonderful plot, and that is very fun to watch. A classic movie that l seen 4times and have never been disappointed!

The way it's filmed, with the nail-biting finish and then the glorious music. It's one of the most joyous moments in the history of cinema. Makes me cry happy tears every time I see it!

I always loved that movie and it was a great inspiration to me at the time it came out. I remember I went to a graduation the year after and the speaker made a speech referencing this movie as possibly one of the greatest movies ever made because of the message it was portraying.

Randy White he was a normal kid. Then he found Italian bike racing and went crazy. I did the same thing, except I am not a Hollywood movie. My whole neighborhood thought I was nuts. Now I’m 59 and still don’t own a car. But I own 3 Italian bikes And I’ve ridden almost around the whole world. And never taken drugs. LoL.

@@PInk77W1 I thought I was the only one who did that. That movie changed my life in three ways. I learned conversational Italian, I became intensely fond of classical music and opera, and I became a bicycle nut riding my bike every chance I got -- all over Northern California. In 1983, I traveled to Milan to Falero Masi's shop in the velodrome and had a custom Masi built for me. I was never really good enough to do serious racing -- I only did club rides, but I did discover several commercial bike touring groups and rode my bike with them across Europe -- the longest being from Amsterdam to Vienna. I still own and passionately love to ride my Masi -- even now at 73. I still cannot stop thinking of DC as his character "Dave Stoller" and the back roads of Indiana whenever I hear the "Barber of Seville," or Mendelssohn's "Italian Symphony" -- or especially, the aria from "Martha." No other movie has touched me as did "Breaking Away."

@@randywhite3947 That's a line from "Breaking Away" spoken by an elderly lady in Bloomington sitting on her porch watching Dave ride by on his Masi Italian bike singing an Italian aria at the top of his lungs. Followed by "... and now look at him."

Welsh Rabbit nice. I rode my bicycle from London to Paris to Rome. Italy is amazing. One day I rode all day. Got to a city around 6pm. Bought a backpack full of Italian food. Rode out of the city to look for a place to camp. Found a little cliff about 500ft above the sea with a nice pine tree and was in heaven. LoL.

As I said on another video -His Father is actually the mainstay of the movie. Yes -the movie is about that terrible time for some of us when we don't have a clue where we're going -but - his Father is a huge symbol for the millions of men that "went to work" for a living , who had no options , who beared up under the weight of it all and then had to see this sea change in the culture with the younger kids who did'nt want to follow in their footsteps but also having no clear alternatives (Such as with Chris and the crew). His Father said he loved his job ,but , looking at those giant blades going all day with all that noise I wonder if the guys who really did that were of the same opinion. Seems like maybe, maybe, a step up from coal mining and I doubt ANY of those guys loved doing that. Despite him being ,perhaps, a tragic figure , he provides a comic back drop for the movie. In reality , the men (and women) , who can struggle a lifetime and preserve a sense of humor about things are the TRUE champions. Athletic achievement is laudable but pales as a test of character compared to enduring endless years of trying to remain upright after a lifetime of struggle.

I watched it like 1.5 million times that summer on cable probably like 1982. I was going in 7th grade it was a great movie young kids about 5 to 7 years older than myself, looking forward in life. It was a great movie I always seemed to learn more each time I watched it.

I have loved this movie since I was a kid. Watched it yesterday and still do...musician Beck Hansen bears an unbelievable likeness to Dennis Christopher specifically in that movie, it's a striking resemblance.

I have a cycling jersey which has Cutters on the front and 34 on the back. Such a thrill when somebody recognises it like my neighbour a few days ago.

Although in the late 70s I had a folding bike and got into vans with people smoking pot, LOLOL. This is my favorite film. I grew up in Urbana-Champaign and so much of it is and was so recognizable.

My favorite movie! Of note. Rybar was definitely a top cyclist then, but he wasn't the top American cyclist, certainly not heading into the 1980 Olympics, that honor belongs to Greg LeMond., though Bob Cook was also a favorite because of the hilly course. Dennis deserves credit for doing so much of his own riding, planned or not, no doubt. 1:15 - He may want to go back and watch American Flyers again. Despite that film's flaws, and there are plenty, Costner actually did a pretty good job with his form on the bike, and that includes shots where you can tell it's him, not a double.

This film was pre-Lemond. Wayne and Dale Stetina, both ironically from Indiana, were more well known nationally than Rydar.
