Film "Le Reel du Pendu" (Hangman's Reel)
André Gladu, 1972
Monsieur Ardoin joue à sa maison avec ses fils
et Dennis McGee, le bon ami de son nonc Amédé Ardoin.
Sady Courville was also present but doesn't play on this number.
In the film the song is cut short so to fade it out is not my choice.
«Qui c'est ça? D'la poudlatte? Oh da's good...»
Poudlatte is not the actual word, but what is it
and why is it dat good?
- Before they start playing "Petite ou la Grosse"
they discuss which type of girl they prefer! -
(Petite ou grosse / Thin or chubby)

Vikki, I met your dad, and I am now 64 years old. And your dad was a great man. He didn't care about race, or color. He promoted music in the hope that all people could be friends. And he succeeded!!

Here is how I can make out the lyrics Alphonse "Bois Sec" Ardoin sang this time for the first few verses: Petite ou grosse, Madame Edouard Ça m'fait d'la peine Petite ou la grosse, chère Ils sont tout l'même prix Donne moi, mama, chère Quoi moi j'vas faire? Rien pas j'ai fait, chère Sont tout l'même prix Petite ou grosse, chère Ça m'fait d'la peine Tout l'même prix, chère Ils est pour moi même (?) Moi, j'ai demander, chère Moi, j't'ai demander Cette la j'voulais, chère Dans ma maison Small or big, Madame Edouard It gives me pain Small or big, dear They're both the same price Give me, mama, dear What am I going to do? Nothing I do, dear They're both worth the same price Small or big, dear It gives me pain Both the same price, dear They're both for me Me, I ask, dear Me, I ask you That one I want, dear, At my house (Word for word translations don't capture the idioms very well. If it's not grammatical in English, it IS in the French he's using!) Excuse the spelling! I am not the best with French. But I am pretty sure I am real close to it. This is Louisiana French, Cajun I guess you would say, not Creole. Denus and Bois Sec, white and black, would have had no trouble understanding one another. My impression of Creole French as spoken by blacks around Breaux Bridge and St. Martin parish is that the grammar and word order is more different. McGee was from Eunice and Ardoin was from L'Anse Prien Noir near Basile and Oberlin, NOT where I would associate speaking Creole French but I might be wrong. I am not a linguist, historian, French scholar --- just a native fan of the music. The story is basically the same in most versions you will hear. It's a young man calling out to a mother (Madame Edouard, Madame Entelle, I have heard different names but it does not affect the basic story) who has a little daughter (petite) and a fat one (grosse). The young man asks her to give them to him. It doesn't matter which one, they're both worth the same to him (Ils sont tout la même prix _ they're both the same price). I don't know why Bois Sec sings Ca m'fait d'la peine (It gives me pain) when what makes better sense in the story is C'est PAS d'la peine (It's no use, it doesn't matter which girl). At the beginning of the video the 2 men are teasing each other. Which one are you going to have? The small one or the fat one?

Looks like a National Film Board of Canada production. Btw, Dennis McGee looks like he could be a brother of the late Metis fiddler, Frank Desjarlais, of Manitoba - even holds his fiddle the same way ... !

The videographer is obviously more interested in showing the emotions of the players than in the playing itself. Too bad. There aren't enough videos of either one of them playing and for those who are interested in their styles there is a lot to learn from seeing how they handle their instruments etc. What I can ascertain is that Denis is putting a strong upbow on the offbeats to match the rhythm of the accordion. His bow grip, what little of it I could see, is quite interesting as well. It looks like he has a pretty tight grip on the bow and his action is more in his wrist and arm more that his fingers.
