Would you like to know how (find this video on the Dennis Moreland Tack blog at: www.dmtack.com/measure-cinch-...) to measure for correct cinch length before you buy a new one? Follow along on the video to see how easy it is!
1.Saddle your horse and tighten the cinch as you usually do.
2. Make sure the middle D rings on your cinch are in the middle of your horse’s belly. If they aren’t, adjust the length of the off side latigo/double off latigo until the cinch D rings are in the middle of the belly. Tighten the cinch after adjusting.
3. Measure from the bottom of the saddle D ring to the top of the cinch buckle on each side. This measurement should be between 6 and 8 inches and be equal on each side when the cinch is tightened.
4. If you have more than 8 inches, add the number of inches you’re over on each side to the length cinch you have on the horse. That gives you the correct size cinch for your horse. Do the opposite for a measurement that’s less than 6 inches.
A cinch bit.ly/2aawim5 that fits correctly is safer than one that doesn't fit. Your saddle will balance better on your horse with the right size cinch. The cinch buckles are less likely to rub on the saddle’s fender hardware if your cinch fits. A cinch that’s too long can be difficult or impossible to tighten adequately. Being certain the cinch D rings are in the middle of the belly prevents the rings from rubbing the inside of the horse’s legs and possible causing sores.
Hand-tied, 31 strand, Mohair-blend Cinches were the first product I made when I started my business forty years ago. My cinches are designed to always pull straight to prevent galling. The majority of cinches available today are made with only 27 strands of cord or less. I designed these cinches with 31 strands to be more comfortable; you can feel the difference and so can your horse.
These cinches will not curl or stretch and will last through years of hard use. You will not find a better made cinch anywhere, nor will you find another that looks and feels this good, I guarantee it!

Does this 8" rule hold true for Circle Y saddles that are rigged much lower than other brands?

Thanks for writing. No, you won't want to use the 8" rule for saddles w/lower rigging. I like to use 4-6 inches on those saddles.
