Hey Billy, just wanted to tell you that listening to your expert explanations of the game and the shots has been for many years unequaled in insight, strategy, the right shots, what the player is attempting to accomplish, actually in every way your commentary is just the best. Wish you were still doing it more. Maybe it takes somebody with a pretty good understanding of the game to really appreciate the value of your comments. I go back to the days of playing Jersey Red and Handsome Danny Jones one pocket in Houston... (with weight.. lol) So I just wanted to let you know that this former player/gambler considers it's a real added treat to have you commenting on what the players are doing from A to Z. Thanks again and good luck.....

Forget pattern racking. If I laid out this table same 10x, I'd be lucky to run out once or twice. So everyone complaining, go play orcollo a few sets for money. I'm a SVB fan but just stating the obvious here. The man can shoot.
@bazkook

+Le Ba Vu Yes Dennis can shoot very well but if all of the top players pattern racked and had the same rack, then other players could probably run packages very often like Dennis did. Use a wooden rack with the balls laid out randomly and let a player run a large package; that is much harder. It's a moot point for this tournament though because there were apparently no rules against pattern racking and soft breaks.

I don't know the rules from 2013 of this tournament. In 2016 the Official BCA Rules were used. And rhis rules say for the 9-Ball Rack: "The balls are racked as follows... d. the remaining balls are placed at random". So pattern racking would be a violation of the tournament rules.

Jayson Shaw never complained because he can do the same thing when he racks if he wanted to. Dennis still have to clear out the rest of the balls so there's still work to be done. I would say he took time to practice this break and it paid off. It's not like one can just step up to a match and break like this. Props to Dennis for coming up with this strategy before the match. People complain but very few if any at all, can do what he did. People who can put racks together will never complain, they'll just do the same thing when it's their turn.

If your racking your own in a 9 ball tournament, is there any reason NOT to pattern rack? After all, everyone participating is trying to give themselves an edge (hopefully except for sharking). As far as making a ball consistently in the side pocket, I've seen examples of being able to do this by fudging a traditional rack, but they're using a template. It looks like Dennis just has the table figured out.

In professional matches (especially money ones) when a player sees his opponent has too easy shot(s) on the last ball(s), he/she will tell the opponent to skip the shots and proceed to a new game. At professional level, you kind of know which shots/situations can never go wrong, so there's no point forcing your opponent to shoot. Philippines players do this a lot in money games. Sometimes they skip up to the 7 ball if they find the current position is too easy for their opponent.

+WaFFLeS no one complained when Strickland suggested that the number 2 ball should be placed at one end opposite the 9 ball when racking, saying that the player who breaks first should be rewarded a shot at the 2 ball if a ball or couple of balls gets pocketed after the break, and it was followed, during the world pool league i.e. the referee always racked it that way, and Strickland even won the championship against Django and though im rooting for the latter, the player who played better just won, no complains regardless of how balls are racked a more skillful player will always find a way on how to get more advantage after breaking, thats just it !!! so i guess the best way is to follow the alternate break rule, but as the commentators said its nice to see players run out racks in succession, i personally prefer it that way, to give better chance to both players, maybe they just add more games like instead of race to 11, they can make it race to 15 or 17

Pretty impressive pattern racking or not. Alternate break and 10 ball is a better format for tournaments imo. Orcollo prolly would have won anyway without the pattern racking. U can't blame a guy for playing within the rules he was given. I'd bet money that all the other players were racking the same patterns every time as well and trying to duplicate each break to make wing balls too. Shaw didn't complain cuz he was prolly doing the same thing but not as successfully. Silly format imo but I guess this is why they play 10 ball now. I think 8ball w random racks is the most interesting format and wish they'd play that more often.
@garyed3
@garyed3 8 жыл бұрын
I'm a little shocked that pattern racking is allowed in any tournament with with top tier players. When they get a shot after the break they usually run out with an open table anyways. Dennis is a great player with or without a pattern rack but there is no question that it gave him an unfair advantage here. Almost every table had the same layout after the break. You could fast forward from one rack to the next & not tell a difference in the table. I've always been a big fan of Dennis Orcollo but after seeing this, I'll have a hard time rooting for him.

So the commentator says "It's really unfair that Dennis keeps soft breaking and making the corner ball on the break everytime." NO IT ISN'T. It's NOT unfair if he's that good and knows what he's doing. This is the game of pool. It would be like saying it's unfair that Michael Jordan makes his jump shot EVERY time. Again, it's not unfair if he's that good and knows what he's doing. It's the game of basketball. Maybe the opposing player or team thinks it's unfair - they shouldn't - but what is the main reason for the game? It's not the players. It's the fans watching who bring in the money that pays for everything to make the game possible including the players winnings or salaries in the case of basketball, etc. And what do the fans want to see? What is exciting to watch. It's a player down 2 - 9 in a race to 13 who then runs 11 racks and wins. It may not be fun for the losing player, but that kind of play brings the fans and their money into the game. It's what makes pool great the same way Jordan's shooting brings fans to the game to watch or a team goes to the playoffs undefeated all season long. That really brings out the fans to watch just as it would a pool player who was undefeated, meaning won every game, not just every match (I don't know if it ever happened, but I give it for example because it would really bring out the fans). We as a society like good play and winners and we'll pay to see it. Finally, the commentator says again, "In my opinion, it's not really fair." If the balls are properly put in the rack at random, only the 1 ball can be played for shape everytime. The problem is Dennis is racking his own balls and in the same way every time, not at random. This is matter of not following the rules and nobody appears to be complaining about. So, I'm sorry, the commentator should know this himself and In my opinion he should not downplay the game he's commentating. Now the other commentator does know everything I just said and shows his knowledge of the game with his remarks.

Well, I’ve always believed the break in 9-ball was a flawed way to continue a game, considering its randomness.. However, rack templates that make the corner ball dead is, IMO, an overreaction the opposite direction.. Especially for pros.. My solution is simple.. Quit playing 9-ball, and go back to straight pool.. The true cream rises playing straight pool..

Is it against the rules??? if it is, then let a referee rack the balls....why would the BCA inject a potential controversy when it could totally be avoided..DUH..endofstory

not trying to take away anything from dennis, hes one of the best money players on earth in his generation. but magic rack + pattern racking without 3-ball pass headstring? you're asking for trouble when you're playing dennis.

I have to disagree. I personally think BI is a lowsy commentator. He won't shut up. He rambles about as much as Chris Collinsworthless. Daddy D is the best!

As a chess player, I find it hard to imagine a competition where the player who wins gets to play as White every game as long as he keeps on winning. It's a clear advantage for the player who happens to get the first runable rack. I don't understand how this is normal in pool. it certainly isn't in any other professional game I can think of.

Yawn... I’m sorry, but there’s really nothing impressive about 9-ball.. I’ve done this many times.. I’d much rather watch a guy run 10 and out all night long, giving up the nuts playing one pocket to someone, and breaking them..

Pattern racking at it's best. 2,3,4 in the back 6,7 up front, 5,8 corner balls and a soft break to make the corner ball. The 2 comes off the bottom rail and comes up by the side every time. Check the racks on this video, they're all the same. This guy is a cheat just like Mike Dechaine. 6 pack? How tough is that if you're guaranteed a shot at the 1 and 2 and guaranteed the corner ball every time? In the last rack when he breaks, the 2 fails to come off the bottom rail and he makes the 1 on the break. He should be able to run 9 and out cheating like this. This is conduct unbecoming of a player and reason for disqualification. Dennis Orcullo has no ethics and we wonder why pool is dying when we have to see stuff like this? If you're looking to spot sleaziness among the pros, look no further than this video. Now go wonder why companies don't want to sponsor tournaments.
