As for my own feelings, hell, even I don't give a shit about them and I certainly don't expect strangers to.

Agreed, feelings are very important, but moreso as a way to understand our values than to act on while ignoring or downplaying the values of others. I think its also important to recognize the complex layers of feeling. We can feel both love and annoyance at the same time. We can feel disappointed in others and ourselves at the same time. I don't think the idea is to ignore our feelings, its to recognize that the meaningful desire to understand and connect with a spouse's needs should try to be practiced even if ones immediate "mood" is not inclined towards that. This is just excellent marital and relational advice. I don't think that relationships thrive with anyone selfishly focused on their own feelings all the time
