The worse thing about a situation like this is the fact that no matter how prepared YOU are, those who arent will become violent and a threat. Being sufficient will make you a target. Its a double edged sword.

Dennis Quaid makes a good point, we are overly dependent on technology. I grew up in the late 1950's and 1960's and if something catastrophic happened we could survive with the basic skills of our forefathers like fire, hunting and fishing. Now we feel vulnerable and alone if we lose our cell phones!, even our automobiles are thinking for us. Without power we lose everything including our survival as all of the experience and skills of the past are gone.

Perhaps that's exactly what we need to wake up Americans. We live in a world where everyone walks around like automatons, staring at their cell phones wherever they go. They can't even put their phones down when working out at the gym. We have become too dependent on technology.

My husband started a garden last year. It amazes me how much all people need to learn, but we are no longer dependent on the basics. Spread the word! Its only been 2 generations. We can equip ourselves.

The department of homeland security addressed this issue in 2019 and said that they estimated that some 80% of the population would die within 2 months of a nationwide grid down situation. They recommended everyone have at least 2 months of food and water, even said the politicians and even the president should be encouraging people to do it. Of course they have remained silent.

Then all eyes turn to the Amish type communities who don't need a drop of grid power.

As South Africans we live with no electricity 11 hours out of24 . It’s adapt or die right now 🌎🌸 using solar powered lanterns . Cooking over a barbecue . Care for your neighbours etc . Crime does go up .

This chills a lot of us especially. We cant rely on our Government 🤦🏻‍♀️ as if!

Everybody needs to watch this documentary. It will open your eyes to the reality of wha could happen if the whole power grid went down. The problem is that our government is doing anything to address it. I wonder why?

And the very people who have the mob capacity to shut the power grid off & adept at using machetes for killing were let in the border. While those who had integrity & honesty to go thru your proper immigration system for visas are being given a hard time. There is a real flaw here. This is the single scariest thing that could happen to us. A nuclear weapon is scary but would take you out quickly. This would cause chaos in the streets with people fighting to survive.

Virtually almost everything built after 1985 has a computer chip of some sort - appliances, automobiles, phones, pacemakers, even clocks - these would all cease to function if we were struck by an EMP or CME. Even most solar panel systems aren't hardened against those issues. Consider the rioting and vandalism that ensued after the 'blue vs black' controversies. Imagine what would happen if people suddenly realized there would be no more food delivered to stores, etc. Anarchy is an understatement.

What he doesn't mention is the fact that, not only would the power go off, the equipment that generates and carries that power would be fried. It's not as simple as resetting the circuit breaker.

The excellent fiction novel "One Second After" by William R. Forstchen frighteningly describes the turmoil that would occur in the aftermath of an EMP attack that would knock out our power grid and all modern electronics. Within a year 90% of the U.S. population could be dead from starvation, lack of medical care, and a total breakdown of law and order. I think you can still find One Second After as an audio book on KZfaq. There's also the book "Lights Out" by Ted Koppel, which is a more investigative reporter type examination of the threats to the very fragile power grid, how the government and power companies are and aren't dealing with it, and the difficult problems a solar flare or EMP event would cause. There are also interview videos on KZfaq with Ted Koppel talking about various aspects of his book.

I've started keeping increased supplies and food as well. Purchased a new generator about a year ago that runs on gasoline and propane. I keep 5 full propane tanks on hand. My wife also convinced me to start letting her raise ducks and chickens. We already stayed prepared for hurricanes because we used to live in Florida. If anything happens we can survive for months, possibly years. Happy we moved out to the county away from all the craziness that will happen in the cities if something were to ever happen.

I almost feel that raising the issue is a security threat in it's self 😂

The government in charge right now would probably welcome an event like this.

One of the reasons I absolutely hate the removal of copper telephone wires. It’s old technology that allows you to power it from wherever you are as opposed to being dependent on a single source. By the way I guess we’re all getting old - I still remember him in Breaking Away.

This is something that needs a hell of a lot more attention than is given so far.

Lol, and here I am in South Africa where its stage 7 load shedding (meaning we are off for about 8 hours a day, every day). Talk about a steep learning curve to survive off grid, we have learnt it because of an absolutely useless government!

My dad was wwii vet who first told me about emp's when we were discussing the Cold War. Also, not many people know about the Carrington Event and the impact it would have on today's world. I think families should throw the breaker on their houses at least once a month to give their children an opportunity to appreciate electricity. But kids would lose their minds without their phones.

We lived on a mile and a half dirt deadend road that was a pricey rd and the town didn’t take care of it WE did so when the ice storm happend in 1998 we went about 20 days without power due to the trees being covered in ice and draped down into the middle of the road the entire way out. Our house was at the very end of the road so we were the last to get power on. And we were fine thanks to our woodstove

All solar and wind plus that many years prepping up in the mountains . 250 to 300 miles from a metropolitan area and rock climber climb drive up here Very insulated from the hords and can go for years n years on suplies on hand any day. Never in the dark cold or hungry. And full kit. Bad times down range.😮😅

You will need to shield your generators. Also install a battery bypass so if it's an emp there is not electric current in the generators to short them out. Look to a Faraday cage as well.

Ending up on a remote Montana 1883 homestead was quite a relief in further fleeing Clown World. Not close to self-sufficient but have more garden crops than I can deal with or sell (local Food Bank benefits). Can't grow chocolate or coffee, though. Few hundred Angus that'd last awhile. Peasants, deer and elk galore (flanking Custer Nat Forest). Guess it's time to examine the 2 of 3 unused 1920s windmills for generator use. Just no radioactive clouds, please. But this was all a surprise to me; on a huge learning curve and nearest windmill is in pieces without Assembly Instructions. Rotor was fixed to barn to keep stable, 80-foot timber poles in excellent shape lying in tall grass along with a bunch of other assorted pieces. 150 years of equipment all abandoned in place but no bets a working generator/alternator around but could probably build one if I knew how. Even a complete monster 1940s welding unit if I really wanted to risk it! So I guess that means I'll go dark with everybody else to later try to assemble it without YT videos to help. Goodbye propane deliveries, too. Yet have always had a wood stove to fall back on and actually makes me nervous visiting my parents in their very nice city home but one that is dependent 100% on energy piped in; no fireplace to burn, etc. Being in prime coal country, that was also used yet have no experience. The massive stoves stored along with a pile of coal in a shed look like steampunk galleons. The thought of moving them even in pieces ... and much less operating one ... is brutal.

It’s not only the prep work and knowledge we need to be concerned with. It’s the extent that other will go with weapon in hand to simply take what you’ve worked hard to achieve. Beware of those who are your fellow man for they can easily become wolves.

Surge protection on our substations? We already have such things in place to protect the grid and transformers, large breakers, and generators, but I do agree it is susceptible to even small attacks which would be a lot of work to get plants back online

As a Brit, I understand why this is chilling to Americans. Forget about the discomfort and consider the anachy. The US has more registered guns than people. In the UK that ratio is less than 1%. US society is already fractured over its corrupt politics. Without wanting to cause offense to anyone in particular, Americans have shown themselves to have under-developed intellects, a lack of empathy for one another, and extremely poor emotional control. So many live in near poverty. I imagine it would be a wild-west scenario where the gunslingers have automatic assault rifles. I think we all know that there's an under-class of disgruntled haters who are praying for just such an end to society so that can get some pay-back before it all goes down the pan.
