Hay Ealan, just wanted to thank you for taking the time to shoot this vid. I took receipt of the Denon A-110 roughly 8 weeks back. I had been having issues attempting to properly set up the 7.1.6 After watching your video, I now understand the required path to take to tell the amp I wanna use two mono blocks for my main L/R fronts. After weeks of pulling my hair out (and there is not much of that left at my age) I finally get it. The A-110 is a full onboard 13.2 capable AVR but my main fronts are rated at 300W and the Denon can only reach half that, so I picked up a set of QUAD mono's with a max out of 500W. Finally I get to appreciate the capabilities of the B&W's I own. Thanks again. Yours Kevin from Glasgow/Scotland/UK

Ealan, I never comment on KZfaq videos, but this video was so insanely useful that I just had to post a thank you. IMHO, this is actually useful for TWO sets of people: *Folks looking to configure a complex home theater system with one of the newer receivers *Folks trying to decide which mid-high end AV receiver to buy who are concerned about how the signals are routed if they do not have enough amplified channels on the receiver Well done, and by the way, you probably saved me $500+ because I now know how I can get away with a 9 channel receiver even though I plan on powering 11 channels (I have external amps, but wasn't sure how it would let me configure them). Awesome video.

@@ealanosborne awesome content!! Do you have a video explaining how to connect my floor stage(5 spkrs) to external amps and have my 4 height atmos speakers be powered by the Denon? Mission accomplished. The external amp is working (LCR channels). Later I'll check to see if those (3) internal amps are truly turned off. But for now, I'm overjoyed knowing the 3-channel ext. amp is in line, getting a signal and working. Did a quick pink noise test and while the LCR remained at the same volume level, I was able to lower the gain on about 5 of the remaining 8 channels a bit and still reach my target decibel level at the main listening area. That suggests more power is being distributed to those channels from the AVR. Based on that point alone, there has been an improvement. (Tears of happiness 😊). Thanks again for your response Ealan!

James, I have the same speaker/amp assign setup issue with my Denon AVR-X8500H with a 5 channel external amp. You say that you solved the config issue. Are you able to post the successful settings that you used? Did you the custom setting?
@jamesmiller2317
@jamesmiller2317 Жыл бұрын
@Ian Taylor Yes, I used the custom setting (Assign Mode). My apologies for the slow response, but to be honest, I forgot to check the settings yesterday. I took a couple of photos of the settings if you think that would be helpful. (But, I would need an email to send them to.) The only issue I've had so far is that I've picked up a slight humm whit the external 3 channel amp in line. The humm is only in the LCR speakers. So now I need a ground wire between my receiver and the smp. Otherwise I'm still very pleased with everything.
@IanTaylor-xd9yp

@@jamesmiller2317 I have since tried the custom setting (Assign Mode) and set Front, Centre, Surround in the Speaker column to "None". This was automatically selected. (This covers the 5 channel external amp: Emotiva BasX A5), then Surround Back to "Surround Back", as per the terminal connection; Height 1 and Height 2 to "Front Dolby" and "Rear Dolby" respectively. This seems to work well. I don't get any hum in the speakers with this config. Is this a similar setup to what you have and have you solved the hum issue?
@jamesmiller2317
@jamesmiller2317 Жыл бұрын
@Ian Taylor Yes, that is the same custom settings I used. The only exception of course is "Surround" as I only have a (3) channel external amp (OSD Nero XA3200), not a (5) channel. To hear the humm, I have to literally place my ear a few inches from the tweeter/ horn. I tried using different electrical outlets at first, but the humm only went away with the ground wire (problem solved). Otherwise, I'm very satisfied with the quality and sound of the amp. To me, it definitely made an improvement and I'm glad I made the change. I'm hopeful you'll experience a noticeable difference and are satisfied with the added amp.

Hi Ealan - Loved this video. I would never have patience to make such a video, it's easy to understand. I have a dumb question ... I have a 7.2 + 6 atmos speakers (Front height, top middle and top rear). I have a Marantz SR8015 that will only allow for 11.2 channels of internal amplification. I see I can set the front or top middle to pre-amp, like in your 11.1 setup in my 13.1 choice. Instead of buying a 2 channel to power just top middle - the emotiva BasX-A3 makes more sense to get and do the front stage, given price diff between 2 and 3. So, do I just run RCA from FL, FR and C to the BASX-A3 and plug speakers in to it? Will Audessey still recognize my center is being powered by the BasX-A3? Another way of asking - I don't see an option to set amp assign for center to pre-out specifically, or does that not matter. Looks like you did the same, but unsure if Audussey will pick that up. The other weird part with the 13.1 channel setup is that, the software will not let me change the height 3 speaker from height speaker to a top speaker, its greyed out completely. Don't know how much that matters or what option I have, but annoying! Sorry for being long-winded! Hope my question makes sense - thanks in advance!

Hello, thanks for the video. If we are talking about the Denon AVC-X3700H specifically. Are you sure that when you are connecting 5 channel amplifier, the AVR disconnects the internal AMPs for the corresponding connections? Because the Manual states that they are disconnected and turned off ONLY if you choose the Amp Assign to full Pre Amp. Can you be wrong here? Just trying to fully understand if I can connect 5 channel amp to power my bed layer and use AVR's amps to power the SBs and 4 Height Channels. Thanks.

Great video sir. If you had a 7.1.4 set up with a BasX A7, do you think it would be better to run the 4 surround speakers to the amp, or the 4 height speakers. Would the AVR be better off handling the 4 heights or the 4 surrounds? Thanks for a great video.

Thanks! I’d go with the AVR handling the height channels, since they’ll require the least amount of power, given that their effects are usually more subtle. 👍

Thank you so much for making this. Cleared some stuff up! Just wondering your opinion… is it worth doing 5.1.4 if the rear in ceiling speakers can only get 50cm behind your ear position… (same as rear surround) or should we just stay with 5.1.2? If only running 5.1.2 is it best to just keep front height rather than front mid? Any help greatly appreciated!
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne Жыл бұрын
5.1.4 will always be better than 5.1.2, just because it means you're literally creating a 3D cube that audio objects can be placed throughout. Make sense? So even if your rear heights aren't too far behind you, it's still worth it. :)

@ealanosborne Жыл бұрын
Hmmm…I think you might be out of luck here, just because of software limitations. As soon as you select the 11.1 Amp Assign (which you need to do since you’re running 7.x.4), it automatically assumes you want to power Front L/R or Rear Heights with that external amp. 😬 The only way to externally power Surround Backs is if you ALSO power either Front L/R or Rear Heights

I’m not the most well-versed in Auro 3D, but my understanding is that having only 2 height channels is just an Atmos and DTS:X thing. Auro 3D is based on a dome or box shape, so you’d have to have speakers above every LR Front, and LR Surround. Does that make sense? Here’s an article going over Auro 3D speaker layouts: www.lifewire.com/auro-3d-audio-4100014#auro-3d-audio-speaker-layout-options

Hi! Thanks for the kind words! 🤘 To answer your question, no, unfortunately. You would need a higher end AVR that is equipped with a 7.1 multi-channel input section (typically used with SACD or high end Blu-ray players that might have a better DAC than your AVR). Otherwise, you would need to get a good ol’ fashioned external amp. Emotiva BasX amps are a great value, OSD and Outlaw Audio too.

Thanks for putting this guide together…actually, all your videos are pretty handy as I’m just starting out! If I’ve got this correct, I need to reconfigure my speaker settings. I have a 5.1.2 setup. I’m using a pair of SVS prime elevation for rears mounted horizontally on the side wall (thanks for the SVS PE video for that tip!) and I have a pair of Dali C1’s mounted at ceiling level next to seating position as Atmos heights. But I think I now need to change the confit because on the setup screen it shows them as upfiring on top of the rears? I think you’re suggesting these need to be changed to top/ceiling. Right?!? 🤔

Having just picked up my AVC-X3700h, this video is brilliant to setup my amp. I am getting slightly confused with the crossover in my system. The speakers and info from the manuals are... Fronts B&W LM1 - 65Hz to 22 Hz Crossover - 3.5Hz Centre B&W LCR600 S3 - 48Hz to 42Hz Crossover - 300Hz, 4kHz Surrounds B&W VM1 - 65Hz to 22 Hz Crossover - 3.5Hz Are these crossover settings correct??? Thanks Stephen
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne 2 жыл бұрын
Oh! I can see how that might be confusing. The crossovers you listed are within the speaker itself, so that’s the frequency at which it splits between high and low frequencies regarding the speaker’s own tweeter and woofer. A crossover in a home theater system has to with where the speakers’ frequency output ends, and where the subwoofer takes over. So with your LM1 speakers working with the X3700H, for example, I’d set the crossover to 80 Hz, since you want to be about 10-20 Hz above their lowest frequency output (which is 65 Hz). Make sense? 😀👍

That’s definitely possible. And at the start, don’t worry about which speakers your using for height channels, as long as it sounds good to you. 😃 As long as you use the 11.1 software assignment, set Floor to 5CH + SB, and set the Pre Out to Front, you can power your 5 bed layer speakers with the A5, and power the rest of your speakers with the internal amps of your x4700h. 👍

Not sure the 7.2.4 configuration I want to setup was completely covered. I’m buying the MarantzCinema 50 or Denon 4800 and interested in using the Emotiva BasX A7 to power the 7 surround (bed) speakers. I would like to use the integral amplifiers for the 4 ceiling Dolby Atmos speakers and a pair of 2nd zone patio speakers. Is this configuration possible?
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne Жыл бұрын
I think it is possible, although I believe the only caveat is 7.2.4 takes up all its processing power, so you wouldn’t be able to watch a movie AND listen to something in Zone 2 simultaneously. But that’s probably not going to be an issue for most. But yes, you can connect an A7 to power your bed layer speakers, and use the internal amps for your heights. It would be the 11.1 amp assign mode, 5 Ch + SB, 4 heights, and assign the front L/R to be powered externally (via pre outs).

Let me start by saying i really enjoy your videos. I currently have an old 5.1 system and want to upgrade to a 9.2. Does it sound better to run a 5.2.4 with the 4 height atmos speakers or a 7.2.2 since i currently don't have any side surrounds and put the 2 atmos directly overhead?
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne Жыл бұрын
5.1.4 will ultimately perform better with Atmos effects in general, since having 4 speakers up high creates a true 3D cube of audio surrounding your listening position. Since Atmos and DTS:X are object-based codecs, having a cube to place those objects in is what the mastering engineers intended, so you’ll get better results that way. 🤘

Hi great video question please if you don’t mind. I just finished setting up my home theater and I’m first running a Sony A90J 65 inch OLED, my question is I’m using a Denon 3700h receiver with two Klipsch RP-800F’S front speakers and two R-41sa’s as the height speakers which are mounted to the wall on each side of the tv cause I didn’t like when you place them on top of the floor speakers and aim it at the ceiling to get the overhead affect. I also have two Klipsch RP-600m bookshelf speakers on stands as the rear and I’m using the tv as the center channel until I get dedicated center speaker, there is a 10 inch woofer as well. Now the entire setup uses hard wired connections and I just bought two Denon 150 home wireless speakers and I would like to use them as rear height speakers to make it a 7.1 but so far I’m not seeing a way in the Denon setup to add two wireless speakers it only gives options for connecting more wired speakers. So is it possible to do this? Thank you so much
@ealanosborne
@ealanosborne 2 жыл бұрын
Ah…looking at the specs online, it looks like the 150 wireless speakers aren’t designed to be integrated into a traditional wired home theater system. It can be a part of a whole house audio system for music streaming through HEOS technology, but that’s not the same. And the 150’s can be used as rear surrounds for the DHT-S716H sound bar, but not in a wired system. Just runs off different technology. Would be pretty awesome if it could be used within a traditional home theater, but the technology just isn’t there…yet? 🤷‍♂️

No, sorry. 7 channel AVRs can only process 7 channels of audio (and up to 2 subwoofers). It’s only once you upgrade to the 9 channel tier that you’ll find AVRs that contain 9 internal amps, but can process a total of 11 channels with the help of an external amp (like the Denon X3700H). Not sure why manufacturers decided to do that to 7 channel AVRs, but that’s the way it is. 🤷‍♂️

Hmmm…that might be too much power for those little R-41m bookshelf speakers. I mean not to the point where it’ll make them explode, but just might wear them down a little too quickly. The x4700h can do 7.2.4 with the aid of a 2 channel external amp, so there’s that option, as well as a whole host of other 9 channel amps from Yamaha or Onkyo. Although lots of 9 channel receivers are out of stock, so I see how the x6700h is enticing. Strange times for lots of electronics with chip shortages and COVID shutdowns at shipping yards, etc…
