What's the difference between a DENTAL ASSISTANT and a DENTAL HYGIENIST? I was a dental assistant for 2 years and I've been a dental hygienist for 2 years now, so I feel now I'm able to equally and evenly explain both careers ...according to my experiences!

Not exactly true. Assistants and have similar responsibilities in terms of cleaning rooms, setting up for clients, running the sterilizer, etc. Assistants can also polish teeth, which hygienists do
@DentalVibes
@DentalVibes 4 жыл бұрын
Negative! Hygienists can’t do most of the DAs duties. They can’t make provisionals, adj removables, most can’t barely take impressions. They are also not fully knowledgeable on certain procedures. Assistants can’t do cleanings because they are not trained and certified to do so🙂
@gdprice79

@@DentalVibes Spot on. I'm a dental hygienist and I approve this message. Unless a hygienist was an assistant for a number of years they can not perform assistant duties very well at all.
@nalalf
@nalalf 2 жыл бұрын
@@DentalVibes assistants also can’t do nitrous, perform anesthesia, let alone be educated on such categories. Know medications from medical courses, aren’t trained on instruments, prophys, SCRP, in general, I’m also sure they aren’t trained or educated on biomedical sciences, oral microbiology, etc. don’t justify and say that dental assistants can do what hygienists do besides cleanings. It’s more than just that. I’m sure if you’re a hygienist then you can list as well, the many courses we had to take (especially if you got your bachelors in hygiene), that assistants definitely did not have to go through.
@waxy1277
@waxy1277 4 жыл бұрын
There have been a lot of changes. But I remember when assistants only had to go to a 2 week of 1 month course. Then I saw some career colleges offer 1 year certification programs and now they even have 2 year Associate Degree programs. Although, around my area, none of those school credits are accepted by any University or Community college. Dental Hygienist on the other hand seem to have a lot more options when looking to get even more schooling. They have the 2 year degrees but also have a 4 year Bachelors program that Universities accept, which can be transitioned into becoming a Dentist if one so chose. The Assistant on the other hand would need to start almost all the way over if wanting to switch to a Dentist or Hygienist.
@stinemn192

Hi. If a hygienist wanted to become a dentist they would have to start dental school from the beginning. It's like going from CDA to RDH, there is no transition
@waxy1277
@waxy1277 2 жыл бұрын
@@stinemn192 It really depends on your school. Make sure that whatever Dental School you choose will honor the credits you got from the former. State Schools are typically safe. Be careful, because some of the private school will tell you they are accredited when no one else accepts their credits.

The state I live in, the DAs (me) can do prophys and cleanings for pediatrics. I’ve worked in pediatrics for 2 years now. We prophy, we scale, we take x-rays, give oral hygiene instructions. In my state they don’t hire or have a hygienist for pediatrics, because pediatric dental assistants can do the same thing for a sadly lower salary. The only thing we can’t do is use a Cavitron.

Courtney , in the USA they love to down play a DA career because it is not mandatory for DA to earn a degree so they assume it is a easy career , they don't realize that in some states DA can place dental fillings and than the Dental Anesthesia Assistant career where the DA has to know science , Assist in Administration of Anesthetic Drugs , Evaluate and Prepare Patient ,Prepare Anesthesia Equipment and Perform Patient Monitoring . And than you have what you call a Orthodontic therapist in the UK aka a Orthodontic assistant . In the UK they pay their Orthodontic therapist good money between $ 27 $ 40 a hour unlike here in the USA . Here in the USA the DA's are still treated like glorified spit suckers .

In other nations, a dental nurse helps the doctor clean teeth. When the dentist is running his tools to clean the teeth, it is the nurse that is using his/her hands to vacuum the water and debris because two hands of the dentist are engaged. One is holding a tongue holder and the other the high-pressure jet. How do you do it alone?

Hygiene can be very rough on your hands. A lot of hygienist choose to only work 3 days, 4 at most. If you work 5, you won't have a very long career. Most hygienist's work at several offices, and do not get benefits :( It's a great job though, and you make plenty of money.

I was interested in dental assisting but I’m not sure how to go about looking for schools. I’m in the Waukegan area on Illinois, any recommendations. Does the certification have to be accredited by anyone such as American dental association?

My dental assisting school knowledge is not super current - but what I do know is it depends on your office/doctor/boss. Many offices do not require that you attended an accredited dental assisting program. As long as you received the certificate (CDA) you should be eligible to work. Some offices don't require CDA at all - they will teach you on the job. Depends on the office you want to work! Hope this helps :)

Teeth Talk Girl Thank you so much, I’m working on applications now! I’m making sure that the job doesn’t require the certification as well, so fingers crossed!

For a dental hygienist yes. It could even be longer is you get your masters or doctorate in dental hygiene.
