I’ve only seen one dentist who didn’t have the helpers. He’s old as dirt and very old fashioned, still uses film X-rays, been in the same office for decades, and last I saw was only two days per week, so maybe he’s finally winding down for retirement! He was a wonderful dentist and only went elsewhere because he wouldn’t do dentures nor oral surgery, so I had no choice but to go to the dental school. Really miss that guy, he was AWESOME for simple extractions and fillings!

I actually disagree with this statement. The year that I had breast cancer (!!) I lost 11 of my 15 employees. It was the hardest year of my entire 36 years of practicing dentistry. Each person that left had a really good, unavoidable reason for leaving. Those of us who remained worked incredibly hard to maintain our standard of care and replace the team members we had lost. You can, however, certainly tell a lot by the staff interactions with the doctor. Are people short with one another? Is the doctor short with the staff members? Just remember to not misinterpret focus and intensity, which are desirable when providing any health care, with shortness or snappiness. Dentistry is an intense profession and especially so when we want to do a really, really good job of caring for our teams and patients.

Yes that most often signify a toxic work environment which stems from the dentists. I had my share of working with unbearable dentists- impatient, moody, angry, greedy (no lunch break as to make more money by taking on as many patients as possible). My health was compromised due to this as well. And they do not care. All they care about is their practice and how much money is being made. Would never work at another dental office again.

I went to the same dentist for more than 30 years who never had a hygienist. He did all the cleanings and wanted to keep a small office. His assistant also answered the phone. I still have crowns and fillings that he did decades ago. He was a low profile guy who didn’t care about becoming super rich and I trusted him. He retired and I didn’t get the same care until someone purchased the house next door and his girlfriend was going through dental school. She was already a dentist from a different country so was trained twice and then also received further training out of state. I started going to her and trusted her because we had become friends. They moved to a different city and she opened her own practice. I drive 3 hours to still see her. I went to the dental school for cleanings from a student hygienist but had a visible cavity that wasn’t addressed and I decided that it was worth the drive. I trust her implicitly and we keep in touch, she calls me her American mom because of cultural differences between her American husband’s family and her own and usually share a meal when I am there to catch up in person. I feel fortunate.

I'm a dentist, and I agree with all the red flags. Unfortunately, dentistry is very subjective. What may seem to one doctor a cavity too small to need a filling, maybe to another doctor, a cavity worth filling. I see patients all the time that tell me their previous doctor diagnosed them with 10 cavities, when to me, only 4 need to be filled. Some Dentists are conservative, and some are aggressive. Unfortunately, this creates a lot of confusion for patients.

OMG. I was just told a couple of weeks ago I had 10 cavities! I said what?!? Everyone was almost too nice. This was only my second visit and I thought finally I found a great practice. The dentist was so friendly and outgoing. I got a crown made in-house. However, I can’t put my finger on it but things started giving me the creeps. Told I needed extensive gum cleaning which was so intense it would be 3-4 visits, pushing implants for a couple of missing teeth that have been missing for decades, multiple xrays. It seemed like they were just trying to milk me dry. Oh, this video addresses no hygenist. Well this was a small practice in a house and the place was crawling with hygenists! They also had three people at the tiny front desk and a financial lady in an office. I thought I was at a car dealership. I left quickly right after they told me to meet with the financial lady. She had the audacity to call my house and unload on my husband about why I left. Somebody has to pay all those employees but it won’t be me.

I went 5 or 6 years with out going to the dentist for fear of what they would tell me I need done. Finally faced my anxiety and schedule one. The dentist really took his time and explained to me why my gums were severely bad and showed me where on the x-rays I needed cavities. He also showed me why one tooth need a filling and why the one next to it needs a crown. He is the first dentist in my life who has told me where and why I needed this dental work. My dentist in the past never listened to me when I told them my problem or area of concern. This one listenes. The hygienist here also were super kind and explained to me how to better floss and brush my teeth. After 6 months of appointments I have gotten 3 crowns and 14 fillings done. Its been a lot of work. But I honestly feel so much better. I had ignored the teeth sensitivity for so long.

I’ve had a bad experience at a dental office near me.. I went in for a simple extraction. The dentist had came in after a hour of me being there and the only patient in the building. They never did a consultation to get me on medication to kill the infection first so she ended up hitting me with Novocain about 10 times with no results (the orajel worked better than their novocain) she told me if she can’t get it numb she won’t pull the rest of it out despite it being halfway out. So there I was in excruciating pain because their medicine didn’t work with a known infection and left a piece still in my gums. My brother went to the same dentist office and didn’t tell me till after everything happened. I also had to pay before I got any work done which I’ve never had to do.

Not a dentist, but at an orthodontist office in the Albany New York area, where they were spreading mononucleosis because of their poor hygiene practices on the open floor plan cubicles. This is a huge multi million dollar private orthodontic Business. Escalade’s and Jaguars parked out back. Needless to say I had to reach out to the health department. They gave my son mono. They would go and open drawers with the dirty gloves, and then come back to the patient’s mouth with the dirty gloves on and put them in the patient’s mouth. They also would clean up and set up for the next patient with the dirty gloves on from the previous patient. I barely could believe my eyes.

Once I said something to him about that and I'm sure he didn't like that. He didn't have a dental hygienist so can't say I ever got my teeth cleaned. He did extract teeth that probably didn't need to be taken out. He had a receptionist and every time phone rang he went to see who was calling. I remember telling my mom something is not right with this dentist and she said he only charges $10.00 a tooth. Friend at work stopped going to same dentist she said he's crazy. Not when they were over booked and had to push your cleaning out 6 months both times! When I was able to switch insurance that was excepted more places, I RAN! To a new dentist. I made my appointment, which they apologized had to be scheduled "next week", as they were booked the current week. I can tell you for a fact due to working at a dental office with this very problem that this is legitimate when they say there are family emergencies. It is unacceptable to be rescheduled 6 months out regardless of that fact. Our office has this problem due to a shortage of hygienists everywhere, and hardly anyone is going to school for it these days. We just put people on a cancellation list, and IF THEY’RE FLEXIBlE, we have them in within the next week or so.

The reason that we have dental hygienist in the United States, is because the dentist went to the dental schools long ago, maybe 50 years ago or so, and asked the schools to come up with a curriculum that would be specifically designed for a professional person who would concentrate on cleaning teeth, and maintaining periodontal situation‘s. Another red flag is when the front desk person/receptionist constantly changes the dates of your appointments without telling you then tries to charge you a "cancellation fee" for not being to attend an appointment you didn't change and were never informed of the change and that persons tries to blame you. Happened after our regular dentist sold his practice to someone else and all of the staff changed as a result. New receptionist was constantly changing all of our appointments on us without telling us and then blaming us for it. Found a new dentist and haven't had a single issue with this.

I’m a hygienist with over 30 years experience I’m on board with her recommendations as well. It’s ok to question X-rays. Watch out for dental offices that pay hygienists on production. In my experience that has not been a good thing for the patient. And don’t lie and say you are brushing at night before bed, we wouldn’t ask if we knew you were.

Not only that, but offices that care more about high production will cause the staff to get stressed out. Thus, it could lead to a high turnover rate.

I would also add 2 things, imo: 1 - High staff turnover! Bad, bad sign. I worked for a corporate (*coughnotherbadsigncough*) office that before I left, had over 15 people quit in 1.5 yrs (so THE WHOLE OFFICE... OVER 2 TIMES) and at least another 3 that left within a month of my leaving. That office is now closed so yeahhh 2 - They don't "show and tell". They just tell you "you need X, Y, Z done" but don't show you the cavities etc on the xrays or even worse don't show you the xrays, period. I remember a kid we had that came in for a second opinion, after being told they needed $15,000+/- work - multiple RCTs, EXTs, fillings etc. I took the FMX and yeahhh, nah. Might've been 1 or 2 small interproximals but the pt was basically told their teeth were bombed out and they about needed dentures. Was a well known BIG dental office that heavily advertises, so is well known but wow. That was a god 5 years ago and it still makes me sick >:\

Show and tell means nothing. They could point to a brown spot on an intraoral photo, or a spot on an xray, and it doesn't mean anything. Unless you have some knowledge of dentistry, you don't know if that brown spot is a stain or a cavity. You have no way to know or not know if the dentist is gaslighting you. I recently had to find a new dentist, because my previous dentist retired. The new dentist did the whole show of taking an intraoral photo and saying "this brown spot is a cavity, you need to get it filled." So, I started asking him if it's urgent, or if there's chance it'll re-mineralize. He started stammering and stumbling, and didn't directly answer my question. Needless to say, I think he's a crook, trying to drill into a perfectly healthy tooth to make a buck.

@@TheDenizxo Hey Deniz, thanks for asking! I did not get a second opinion. I don't want to spend $100+ on yet another dentist, to verify if this drug addict is lying or not. Yes, really. After my exam, I looked up this guy on my state's dental board website, and I found out that his license had been suspended twice in recent years because the cops found him in possession of illegal drugs on multiple occasions. His dental license was only full re-instated a few days before my exam. Yikes! I went to this dentist only because my mom's friend recommended him, and this friend wasn't aware of all this. Anyway, the "cavity" is on the chewing surface of the molar, which has brown stains anyway. On the intraoral photo, he pointed to one brown stain that looked exactly like all the other brown stains, and said it's a cavity. And that he recommended filling it "by the end of the year." What's so significant about the end of the year? Hm, perhaps to bill as much as possible to this year's insurance allowance?

My first dentist had almost all of those red flags. My parents never took me to the dentist as a kid so I had no idea that it wasn't normal for the dentist to do the cleanings and I didn't know what perio charting was until I started watching your videos. I switched to a new dentist for my next checkup. I'll be changing again because while the dentist and hygienist at the new clinic was great, the billing department is terrible and overcharged me and my husband and refuse to give us our money back. They also charge $40 for an oral cancer screening when it should be included in the exam. They said it's an "advanced" screening that uses some sort of device to check for cancer. I declined thinking they'd still do the manual check where they move your tongue around and whatnot but they didn't do it. Apparently it's pay $40 or get no cancer screening. It sucks because I do like the dentist but I hate being ripped off.

You should still get xrays done every now and then so dentists can see small cavities and some areas of bone loss they cannot see with their naked eye. Getting severe decay and bone loss is a lot worse than the occasional xray exposure. Of course I wouldn't overdo it and would opt for digital rather than film. I visited a dentist yesterday after basically never visiting one and not taking care of my teeth for nearly 15 years (I am 22 as of writing this). Reason I not start to care about my teeth is constant pain I have for 2 weeks now. In a summary, my now new dentist seems very competent based on the mentioned Red flags in this video. There is a lot he told me I have to go through in the near future (3 planned appointments for now) but everything was explained and I had time to ask. First they did they did an x-ray and after that the dentist came in and explained what he already saw on the xray (my wisdom teeth are all in a risk position and should be taken out before it becomes a bigger problem, as well as one broken tooth next to a wisdom teeth that is practically beyond repair and should also be taken out). Speaking about the one permanent tooth that needs to be taken out, he said I don't necessarily need a replacement like an implant due to it not having any effect on chewing anyway but if I want I can get one in a year or two as the overall condition of my entire teeth has a priority right now (I have cavities basically everywhere). He also manually looked at my teeth as well in case there was something maybe not visible on the xray and after that we spoke about my insurance situation, questions I still had, etc. Then I got my appointments of which the first one is a deep cleaning which is majorly covered by my insurence, after that the tooth extraction and then the cavity therapy. Overall this dentist seems competent and honest from my perspective but I keep my eyes open. For now I am at least thankful they take care of me because it was hard enough to find anyone here (Germany).

Come to find out one of my teeth needs a root canal re treatment and the crowns that were put on are not in good shape for them to be a year old. Also lost one tooth before visiting this new dentist and I feel like that tooth had to be re treated also. I even brought it up asking if there's something I need to worry about regarding the gums in my lower mouth because they're tender and sometimes painful, my dentist literally brushes it off (no pun intended) as a potential side-effect from 15 years of bulimia, and not gum disease/infection. I worry my teeth will actually fall out eventually as the gums have retreated back, all the way down to the nerves. Thank you for making this video!!

I went in for my routine cleaning, and the hygienist spent less than 15 minutes in my mouth, skipping back-and-forth through my mouth with out fully cleaning it and proceeded to say “oh your teeth is perfectly clean, we didn’t have to do much at all today.“ needless to say it left a bad taste in my mouth, and I never went back, which is a pity because the dentist was great and the other hygienist that I had in the past were all great, but I did not want to have that particular hygienist ever again working in my mouth. I've used online coupons (Groupon, etc) to get routine exams/xrays/cleanings. The most recent one I saw did things differently from other dentists I've used. 1st, they did my tooth x rays while I was standing in a room separate from the exam room, rather than the x-rays where you stay in the chair, bite down, and get photos taken with the thing right next to your face. 2nd, they didn't do any tooth polishing after the cleaning. My appointment was under 30 minutes. Lest I sound paranoid, they didn't seem ready to go when I arrived (one of the cleaners wasn't hooked up and the dentist had trouble doing it), the toothpaste sample they gave me was expired over a year ago, and they offered $10 Amazon gift cards if you left a Google review. Now I know why they had hundreds of positive reviews! D'oh!

Hi, I really enjoyed watching your video. I am a dentist who has always practiced at a very high level of awareness of dental and periodontal disease, and have focused on this sort of treatment before my patients would receive restorative care. Periodontal maintenance, to me, has been very important. I want to give you a reason why we are having such a hard time finding hygienists in some offices. Part of the reason is because during this last shut down of businesses, between 2020 and now, many hygienists have fallen out of the profession, and/or have retired, and have not been replaced. As a matter of fact, the dental schools and hygiene schools often would not allow students to practice on people. The skill level of new graduates, therefore, is quite low. There will be a learning curve, but they often do not have the experience necessary to jump into a normal full-time practice. The other reason was that, based on what I heard and saw, with some of my Hygienist friends, there were scary articles in the hygiene publications, which caused Hygienist to be afraid to go back to work. This has been very hard for dental offices, and has, in some cases, where there were three or four hygienists to begin with, caused DENTISTS to take up the slack and fill in for their hygienists who are not there anymore. It is very detrimental to Those offices where restorative dentistry is necessary. It is essential to keep up the periodontal maintenance, but then restorative dentistry falls behind. It would be really nice for you to put up a video that extols the virtues of working in a very clean environment, and that might discuss some of the other things that Hygienist can do other than cleaning teeth, Such as creating an advanced perio maintenance program, using oral DNA labs, using a Perio scope, or Emdogaine treatments for bone regrowth, etc.

Dentist here. I agree with most of the red flags. It is important to note that there is a major dental hygienist shortage right now so a lot of offices do NOT have a hygienist, especially after Covid because so many RDHs quit. Like the video said, if the dentist does a good job with your cleaning, it should be fine. I do a lot of cleanings in my practice. It's nice to just clean teeth especially at the last hour of the day. I've had some of most fun with these appointments because cleanings are super easy compared to everything else I have to do. My patients and I will chat, catch up on life, and goof around. It's great. I used to hate cleanings but now that I'm so busy, doing cleanings is like a nice break from my "actual job." Additionally, we take a lot of x-rays at my practice. The radiation dosage is low and now the ADA guidelines state that patients don't even need lead aprons or thyroid collars. We take routine x-rays to bill out to insurance but sometimes, I will take an additional x-ray and waive the cost because I really need to know what's going on. My time is valuable and I don't feel like wasting it by haggling an x-ray fee with a patient. A lot of people get upset with dentists and dental offices because their insurance sucks. We've had insurances deny patient claims for the dumbest shit and of course, patients get mad at us when we've sent in all the information, x-rays, letters, etc. to their insurance companies. I don't think patients understand that insurance companies are not out to help people and dental insurances, in particular, are the worst.

When KZfaq suggested your video I had to watch and was nervous as I was afraid of seeing the red flags and thankfully my dentist didn’t have any. My dentist did my pockets when I was new and my cleanings take around 30 minutes and are very thorough. The dentist always stops in after the cleaning to discuss any areas that I can improve on and shocked me completely by actually sending me a check for a fluoride treatment that I paid for and they discovered it was covered by my insurance. I love my dentist and the same hygienist all the time. Something you should add as a red flag is upselling procedures that often occurs in big corporation type offices and even in smaller ones. I went to one after my dentist of 20 years decided to retire and went in on a X-ray and exam special new patient deal and right away my 6 tooth bridge had decay and needed changing to the tune of 11,000 😢 when I went to my present dentist she told me it was very minor decay and could be dealt with by stepping up my at home care which I did and reversed the decay 100% Unfortunately some dentists want the big payoff right away and have no desire to build a long term relationship.

I once had a dentist who was part time farmer and part time dentist. He and his wife ran the whole office. Dentist did all the cleanings, visit lasted an hour and he had a little 8 inch tv for entertainment of the patient. The wife typed the invoices on a typewriter! This wasn't that long ago either. Maybe 20 years. He used to have me hold stuff too, like the container for the teeth polish he was using to polish the teeth.

I went to a dental office pretty far from where I live, everyone is nice but the office is just a little bit run down, the vinyl coverings of the chairs are cracked, but they have some of the newest technology, like they can 3-D print crowns so you don't have to wait, and they do almost everything in-house. I tried out another place closer to where I live, they have a big advertising campaign, lots of billboards and ads, free whitening, massaging chairs, fancy office, flatscreen tvs on the ceiling... but they didn't do a perio chart and the dentist barely spoke to me, and I'd need to go to a whole different office to get my wisdom teeth removed. I went back to the first office. I don't mind the distance if I get better care.

If the dentist has been doing the cleanings and has been saying "You have a little inflammation", he eventually gets a hygienist and she says "You have some bone loss", that will be a big regret.

You are so right!!! Thank You!! I have a great dentist now but in the past, I tried one and the assistant hit me in the flippin head with the xray machine, did not offer to suction my mouth during cleaning and also kept calling me sweetie, in an annoying way... like over and over... and I am 60 years old< I ran and never looked back

So I definitely ended up at a dentistry with all of these red flags, I got to spend 5 minutes with the dentist , I was billed twice for this appointment once with the dentist I saw and once with a dentist I never went to see. My insurance confirmed the double billing but the dentistry refused to acknowledge it $240 for 5 minutes what a rip off At the time I had absolutely horrific cavities I asked what can I do right now to help with this they said don't worry about it. Gave me the referral to get a wisdom tooth extracted and ended up getting two wisdom teeth extracted and then had my second molar broken during set extraction on the lower right hand side of my jaw. The oral surgeon who did the extraction kind of just shrugged his shoulders and said my tooth was like mush and I should go get it filled ASAP. When I contacted the original dentistry who made this referral, to see if I could get an appointment to save my second molar get it filled they said no go elsewhere. I realize now what I went to was a Mcdentistry, From here the story actually does turn out pretty well having that toothbroken prompted me to finally take care of my oral health I had not seen a dentist ever in my life for so much as a cleaning long story there. When I went to get this tooth filled they didn't bill me for an emergency fee, they managed to save my second molar by getting a second opinion from a very experienced dentist they had staffed. She it upon herself to do the filling personally for me, and worked a dental miracle. This same dentistry gave me $1,500 in free deep cleanings, this free service allowed me to pay the $2,000 in cavity fillings I needed. So just one more wisdom tooth to go we're going to a different oral surgeon for that and I'll be doing routine teeth cleanings every 4 months to keep my gum disease under control for the foreseeable future. 2022 has been an expensive year and all of this has happened since May.

Thanks for this video. While there are a lot of fine dentists out there; however, it’s good to be reminded that there also not so great, and downright terrible dentists. With the dental regulations we have in place today, hopefully this is much less likely to happen. Back in the later 80s I had moved and was looking for a new dentist. I was recommend a particular dentist (by two different co-workers). I’m very diligent with my personal dental care and had not had a cavity in many years. When I went to this dentist, all of a sudden I was having numerous (what he called) 2nd and 3rd level cavities. He even showed me x-rays, which I now know were not mine. My last appointment with him was scheduled to fill another cavity, I called to say I was running 5 minutes late, and they told me I’d have to reschedule - I never did. A year later, I went to a different dentist, to get this long awaited filling done. Turned out, there was no cavity. He was deeply drilling out perfectly good teeth to pad his bank account. Those teeth he compromised. After years of regular stress, they cracked and broke off. My advise, if you have any reason to be skeptical, get a second opinion.

My former dentist had students taking molds of my teeth. It would take them forever. I didn't get a discount either. I was once left in a reclined chair where the head was lower than my body. I had to crawl out of the chair on my own. My neck went out and I couldn't hear very well. I was too embarrassed to pursue it.

I'm so blessed to have my current dentist/team. In my former city, I didn't have dental insurance so I went to the free/discounted clinics for low-income individuals. They did more damage to my teeth. One dentist started a root canal and never finished it. I had this huge white mold of whatever they used embeded in my teeth for years until another dentist finally properly removed it and scheduled me to have a real root canal. The bad dentists in my former city also used to start working on me and then stop throughout the process to work on other people. I don't recall them having dental hygienists. Since I've moved, my last 2 and current dentist have been absolutely wonderful. They have real hygienists, take the proper time to work on my mouth and explain what's going on. They go above and beyond to help me understand and maintain healthy teeth AND gums. They are also caring, friendly and gentle.

I had a 5 min cavity filling (+2 min for anesthesia and 15 min waiting in waiting room till he took other patient in) in Turkey at state dentist and when I asked questions about it, why he used silver filling without my consent or at least informing me, why he’s not filing and polishing to match a tooth shape and reconstruct my bite he was offended and rude. He basically filled my cavity like filling a hole on a street and half of it came off right away while the rest caused permanent tooth staining. Filing a complaint did not help as I was questioned like the guilty one and I it concluded with an answer that in order to ‘help’ as many patients the dentist has a limited time of 15 min/patient and if my filling came off to go back and have it redone there. 🙅🏻‍♀️

My OB ripped me off. I got an HPV vaccine and I'm pretty sure she said the price was for a complete set. When I went there for the second shot she asked for another payment saying the price she gave me was for per shot. Next time I go to any medical practitioner I will have to list down questions and make sure the prices are clear.
