Hello Im studying to become a dental assistant. I see you posted this 8 months ago so i assume you graduated. Congratulations. Im doing work and i have this question it say, " You are assisting the dentist with a new patient, a 35-year-old woman. She has a large swelling associated with a lower right molar, is running a fever, and has not been able to sleep or eat for the past two days because of the pain associated with her tooth. After an initial clinical exam, the dentist orders a radiograph of the area. Once the dentist leaves the room, the patient becomes reluctant about having the radiograph taken because of the exposure to radiation. What information can you provide her so that she better understands and appreciates the importance of radiographs? Discuss with your patient the protection steps that will be used before, during, and after x-ray exposure." Could you help me?

I just stumbled upon this channel and I'm very thrilled with what I've seen. I've been an assistant for the past 18 years and i love that there is a community for dental assistants to come together to learn and share tips with one another. My advice for new assistants... speed will come with time and practice. Be patient but put an effort to get better. Every patient is different and tolerates xrays differently. Every mouth is different. You will encounter patients that gag. Patients with small mouths. Patients with large tongues. Tori. Dry mouth... the list goes on. You may not complete every patient in under 10 minutes. Some patients require patience and care. Give them a good experience and don't rush if you can. Build trust. Also, if you use digital xrays (like Dexis)... try not to use that clear plastic around the sensor. Instead, look into Steri-shield barriers. Much tighter and less of a mouth full.

Ran into your channel and I’m hooked. I’ve been a rda for 17 years. 1 tip I have for gaggers when taking X-rays is putting salt (with pts consent of course) around the area you are about to take the X-ray. The salt relaxes their muscles and u can get way better X-rays. Have saliva ejector and paper towels handy. Lol

A sprinkle of salt on the tip of the tongue is an old trick that they teach in dental school. The saltiness on the tip of your tongue will distract your mind and concentrate your senses on the front of your mouth. This can dull your gag reflex long enough to allow for some successful dental x-rays. And also use a handheld x-ray

I like having patients swish for 1 min or 2 with a topical paste ( 1 tsp to a generous amount of topical and mix in cup )then have pt. gargle on back of throat. This really helps with gagging, sometimes I even have to put topical swabs in all quads for a minute and suction patient before taking xrays. RDA Carla

Hey ladies, you all have been so helpful to me in the past. I was wondering if you have any tips for taking the upper anterior PAs without overlapping. I still struggle with those. I’ve gotten a couple without overlapping but usually they have it. Also, I know I’m in California so it might be different but any tips on things I should study for the RDA exam? Thank you
@DentalVibes
@DentalVibes 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Courtney! Check out @thedentaladvocate on IG, he is in CA and can provide accurate info for that State. So with anterior PAs you always gotta take 3 per arch (1 PA placed right behind each canine and the other behind the centrals). Due to the curvature of the arch, it is difficult to avoid overlapping. For that reason the take 3PAs of the upper anteriors and of the lower anteriors during an FMX; this way you can all the sides. Another thing you can do is get a 2x2 gauze folded in half, place it over the bitting area of the sensor holder and have the pt bite on that; it will help provide stability to the sensor. You can also have the pt hold the sensor on the side to help stabilize it. Lastly, always make sure the sensor is placed parallel to the teeth. Practice will make perfect!

Tips # 1: Bring your own saliva ejector tips and high volume evacuation (HVE) suction tips. They're cheap, about 5 cents/tip. I have seen a dental assistant using a germicidal to wipe the tips without replacing it and imagine if it goes into your mouth with all that chemical.

Hey there, I have been taking x-rays now for about a month and I’ve watched your video a couple of times. After practicing, I feel like I have a few techniques down. The one question that I still have though, is about angling. Would you say that I should be aiming my cone perpendicular to the sensor or should I be aiming it towards the teeth that I am trying to x-ray? Also, one of you said the bite wings are the easiest but I struggle with those the most especially the pre-molar one.
@DentalVibes
@DentalVibes 3 жыл бұрын
Hello!!! Premolars can be tough. You have to angle it to face the premolars and sometimes you need to push the tongue out of the way to get room. As far as aiming your cone for a PA it’s like looking down on the tooth from the root because you want the apex. Are you using Xcp rinns?
@courtneycarballo6343
@courtneycarballo6343 3 жыл бұрын
No, we just have digital sensors, no rinns. I’ve just been kind of guessing on my angles and have got most of them down. Sometimes my bite wings come out diagonal or more of upper or lower showing. Also sometimes difficult patients that can’t bite all the way down.

@DentalVibes
@DentalVibes 2 жыл бұрын
Hello! That would be hard to do since we would need a patient with tori. Also, it depends on how big the tori is. The trip is to push it towards the tongue as much as possible so the tori doesn’t block patient from biting. The discomfort will always be there. Let the patient know in advance, because of the tori it will be uncomfortable and to hang tight you will try to be as fast as you can

@DentalVibes
@DentalVibes 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! We’re glad we can help. As far as reading the X-rays. It’s always good to pay attention to the dentist diagnosis so you can learn what to look for on X-rays. Dental assistants can’t diagnose. Therefore, the dentist will take care of it. Now, once you build a bond with your dentist you will probably tell them as “heads up” what you saw when you took the X-ray. That way the dentist has an idea of what he/she is walking into 🙂

Don't knock films that don't use a sensor. ScanX dental xrays are digital xrays that do not use sensors. These xrays are very good quality- same as xrays with a sensor and often better. And they are much more patient friendly. There is no discomfort from the sensors because there are no sensors used. These are phosphorus plates. Practices that use this system are not "old school" or "back in time".

Not all dental offices have the rings. The rings to me are for those that really don’t know how to take X-rays. After dental school I never used the ring anymore using the rings are like using tracing wheels of course u will get a perfect X-ray with the ring but try taking it without the ring.

Can someone PLEASE tell me why in all these videos and in so many offices the thyroid collar is clearly not even CLOSE to covering the patient's thyroid?! Its one of the most crucial aspects about taking xrays!

Hey Tracy we’re assuming you didn’t actually watch the video before leaving this comment. On the video we make a note to point out the apron falling and that we were not actually taking X-rays just sharing tips on placement. Maybe YOU should make a video sharing your expertises since all these videos are below your standards. Keep smiling 🙂

My jaw dropped when you said no longer than 10 minutes!! I guess I’m just a second-year in hygiene school, but it’s still taking me at least 30 minutes to take a CMS, maybe it’s because we’re graded ion it... Idk how I’m ever gonna get down to 10 minutes!! 😵‍💫🫠

It’s not complicated! Can it be a little uncomfortable? Yes! But, it’s fast and you don’t need to do it often. There are far worse things we have to do in life. Actually, it has improved a lot🙂

@@DentalVibes everyone is entitled to their opinion however my experience has been more than just uncomfortable with taking x-rays, as I was biting down all the way in back of my mouth the sensor cut the roof and blood was drawn. The good tip from your video was to use gauze on the hard plastic sensor to avoid causing more problems in our oral health. Perhaps the edges should be made of softer rubber to achieve the result the doctor needs to provide the best care for patients

I told a patient that had severe gag reflex that they could take it out once the beep was over and they dropped it, the sensor broke, and I’ve never let a patient grab a sensor again 🥲
