What is the reason for selection of particular tooth and specific surfaces in ohis

Index tooth is the first erupted permanent tooth in the respective sextant. So this index tooth can be used for most of the age groups including younger group. There is salivary pooling on lingual for lower molars and parotid region on upper molars. So we expect these surfaces to be clean hence Ideal for examination

Also at 7:54 you mention, the segment 3 is from premolar to third molar, although in the box of “Rules of Oral Hygiene Index“ it says that 3rd molar is not included. I cross checked with some other slides to see where the problem lied, and i think it’s in the diagram. The diagram has an extra 3rd molar

In OHI-S 3rd molar can be used (if the 1st &2nd molars are absent and 3rd molar act as a functional one ).

OHI is more sensitive as it assess detailed data of oral hygiene status compared to partial data of OHI-S

U have to exclude the segment. Denominator in the calculation will be 5 instead of 6

Index tooth is the first erupting permanent tooth in the particular segment. So it can be considered for checking the index at very early age for all patients.
